You don't like the sound of the truth
Coming from my mouth
You say that I like the proof
Baby that might be so
I might get to the end of my life
Find out everyone was lying
Look like you are not afraid anymore
I say that I would rather die trying

Oh swing me way down south
Sing me something brave from your mouth
And I'll bring you pearls of water on my hips
And the love in my lips
All the love in my lips

This time when I swung the bat
And I found myself laying flat
I wondered
What a way to spend a dime
What a way to use the time
Aint it baby?
Now I looked at our reflections
In the window walking past
And I saw strangers
I think we're just so scared all the time
That's the main reason why
The world is so dangerous

Oh swing me way down south
Sing me something brave from your mouth
And I'll bring you pearls of water on my hips
And the love in my lips
All the love in my lips

You don't like the sound of the truth
Coming from my mouth
You say that I like the proof
Baby that might be so
Tell what's wrong with having a little faith
In what you're feelin in your heart
Why must we be so afraid
And always so far apart

agreed.
Patty's great. Ask Robert Plant. Emmylou makes everything wonderful.
This masterpiece doesn't get played often enough. Good lord what a great song.
The lyrics at left are inaccurate.  These may be better.

You don't like the sound of the truth
Coming from my mouth
You say that I lack the proof
Baby, that might be so

I might get to the end of my life
And find out everyone was lying
But I don't think that I'm afraid any more
I say that I would rather die trying

Oh swing me way down south
Sing me something brave from your mouth
And I'll bring you pearls of water on my hips
And the love in my lips, all the love in my lips
This time when you swung the bat
And I found myself laying flat I wondered
What a way to spend a dime
What a way to use the time, ain't it, baby?

And I looked at my reflection
In the window walking past and I saw a stranger
I'm just so scared all the time
Makes me one more reason why the world is dangerous

Oh swing me way down south
Sing me something brave from your mouth
And I'll bring you pearls of water on my hips
And the love in my lips, all the love in my lips

You don't like the sound of the truth
Coming from my mouth
You say that I lack the proof
Baby, that might be so

Tell me what's wrong with having a little faith
In what you're feeling in your heart?
And why must we be so afraid
And always so far apart?

Oh swing me way down south
Sing me something brave from your mouth
And I'll bring you pearls of water on my hips
And the love in my lips, all the love in my lips
The lyric is not ". . . like the proof."  It's ". . . lack the proof."

And also low.  8 to a 10, no contest.
This is so pretty!

Dixie Chicks also do this one very well, but their version is so rushed  — in a 21st-century sort of way.

Yeah, this was originally recorded in the 20th...

I've noticed that 'technique' or 'affectation' or whatever you wanna call it, adds a level of depth. Like 3D glasses or something. Stevie Ray Vaughn was famous for playing just the tiniest bit behind the beat, it was practically his signature. I like it. But I can understand how it could make some people cringe.

The D.C. version has more edge to it, it's a bit 'angry' somehow. Plus the production is completely different: this sounds like they were sitting in somebody's living room. And I mean that in a good way. Some of the best music comes from folks who would be making music whether they got paid for it or not: they'd be sitting around somebody's living room or porch, if it wasn't a studio.

Easy, there, pardner.  This is mighty fine country music, sung by mighty fine women.  (Appalachian foothills cloggin' version of country music, and a good example of it.)

She'll bring you pearls of water on her hips, for heaven's sake!  What more can a man ask?

Again, as I've said a thousand times, just cuz someone has a country twang and there's a banjo does NOT make it country.  As with so many artists on here she is more alternative folk, singer-songwriter, etc.  I can't stand it when people lump all people into gawd awful "country" because of a twang.

Most people, even those who listen to country stations would not recognize real country music.

Oh also Patty with Emmylou = yummy!

Very kind offer, have just bought 1,000 Kisses and Impossible Dream on Amazon. Do I qualify?

Aaaahhhh. Took a short road trip last weekend and played only Patty to and from ("Children Running Through," "1,000 Kisses" and "Impossible Dream"). It made me wonder why I ever put these in the CD rack, vs. keeping them loaded up and ready to play. I agree with a previous poster, I can't stand most country music - but Patty's country-inflected work stands apart. If you ever have a chance to see her perform live, DO IT. I did a few years back - one of the best concerts I've ever seen. Left me breathless and overwhelmed at how incredible her voice and guitar & piano playing are.

Not me - I love this unpolished version where I can actually make out all the words....love it  (plus this is not the studio version that she did on whatever album that was I don't think)

2 great songs from 2 of my faves-I hate to admit but kinda like the Dixie Chicks version a bit better on Truth-

This song makes me wish the ratings went to 11.

I used to dream about creating my own radio station.  I'd play songs that are loosely cataloged as 'adult alternative,' but avoid the stuff that's been hyper exposed on regular radio.  I'd mix in some eclectic stuff, and some gems from the 80s and before. I'd zig when others would zag.

And I'd play songs from Patty's awesome unreleased album, Silver Bell. In fact, the first song I'd play would come from that album. It sums up everything that is wrong with corporate music.

Then I found Radio Paradise, and my station has already been created.  Thanks, Bill!!

True that!!!!

Love Patty Griffin...and ELH...hope that Bill will play "Move Up" from Patty's latest CD..."Downtown Church". Terrific CD...a very "feel good" collection of songs {#Daisy}

What a great song!!

Oooh. Two of my favorites together! Not much better than this! Thanks RP! Love this!

It would be pretty intellectually dishonest and narrowminded to not play some country music on an eclectic station. Open thy mind.

Oh that explains all the hiphop and punk we hear on this station.

"country music" is the only music I cannot stand...HOWEVER, I love this. I love the non-annoying country such as this. Johnny Cash...Willie Nelson...
