From the rooftops I remember
There was snow, white snow
Clearly I remember
From the windows they were watching
While we froze, down below
When the future's architectured
By a carnival of idiots on show
You'd better lie low
If you love me, won't you let me know?
It was a long and dark December
When the banks became cathedrals
And a fox became God
Priests clutched onto Bibles
Hollowed out to fit their rifles
And a cross was held aloft
Bury me in armour
When I'm dead and hit the ground
My nerves are poles that unfroze
And if you love me, won't you let me know?
I don't want to be a soldier
Who the captain of some sinking ship
Would stow, far below
So if you love me, why'd you let me go?
I took my love down to Violet Hill
There we sat in snow
All that time she was silent still
Said if you love me, won't you let me know?
If you love me, won't you let me know?

Can one be motivated by "conscious uncoupling"?

Thanks for the link. This is fun:
By writing this letter, I am indeed sticking my head far above the parapet. The big danger is that Cold Play will retaliate against me. It'll most likely try to force me to develop an eating disorder although another possibility is that its activities are a sociopolitical tragicomedy. On the one hand, they leave us in the lurch, but on the other hand, they strip the world of conversation, friendship, and love. The most entertaining part, though, is that the unalterable law of biology has a corollary that is generally overlooked. Specifically, many people are incredulous when I tell them that Cold Play intends to siphon off scarce international capital intended for underdeveloped countries. “How could Cold Play be so brusque?”, they ask me. “It doesn't seem possible.” Well, it is obviously possible, and now I'll explain exactly how Cold Play plans to do it. But first, you need to realize that if it would, just once, demonstrate real and genuine concern for others, Cold Play might begin to realize that we find among narrow and uneducated minds the belief that it can achieve its goals by friendly and moral conduct. This belief is due to a basic confusion that can be cleared up simply by stating that Cold Play likes to argue that the majority of saturnine, brassbound recreants are heroes, if not saints. Admitting the apparent correctness of this contumelious argument, we may prove the contradictory of its conclusion by an unassailable argument of our own, which is called an elenchus. My elenchus begins with the observation that Cold Play is not only immoral but amoral. Anyway, I hope I've made my point, which is that Cold Play is trying to hold itself up as a cultural icon.
Ask Peter Gabriel. He might know.

I appreciate that RP doesn't give a shit which songs are played where and how much. They simply add what they think are the best tunes from the best albums.
Actually I agree with you, but for totally different reasons. It gives me the opportunity to skewer the suck ass songs when they play them and that brings me joy especially during mundane work days. So, yes thanks RP!
Oh and b4 you label me a hater or troll, my positive comments outweight my negative over 2 to 1. Look it up if you are so inclined to do such a thing. You see, I have this crazy notion that song comments are for one to honestly give an opinion on the song that they hear, huh, crazy me!
The lyrics of most Beatles songs aren't exactly masterpieces of poesy - "I wanna hold your hand", "She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah" - but folk still like 'em. Or pick any other popular rock band.
I think the Beatles´ examples you quote are simple, but effective. And I agree there is nothing wrong with repetition in poetry, songwriting, etc. I just think the whole imagery is a bit lazy..."by the rooftops I remember it was snow, white snow".
Yes, it did wear out its welcome.

what did you mean by that last part?
Kind of a stretch, don't you think? A portion of the song has the same chord sequence? BFD. You could find 150 examples of that if you really looked. Every artist rips off somebody at one time or another. Sometimes intentionally, sometimes not.
All this "They ripped me off stuff" is getting kind of old.

chirpie? olathe? kansas? now those are funny.
Now that's just harsh. If you prick a Kansan, doth he not bleed?
Here's one for ya: Coldplay is the most overrated band in the world. Final.
I like this song, but let's admit it... that's funny.

I remember when these guys sounded fresh and interesting. This is just plain awful. 3.
Don't worry:
don't forget the Thom!
How about this? "To the Bono and to the Edge and to the Larry and Adam. Thomyorke."
(I'm sure that Chris Martin crosses himself before shows, mumbling "to the Bono and to the Edge and to the Larry and Adam).
don't forget the Thom!
I'm startin' to think they might have become one those one great album and the rest ho-hum bands; I thought Rush of Blood was peak Coldplay: had about 6 great tunes on it. since then....i take a pass.(but never seen them live; i don't really like Queen but from what i've seen on old stuff Freddie put on a masterful show that I would dig). What others bands—and I hope this would reveal some of your true colors— that only one good album in them? all genres are cool...
Well I don't know that I agree with you that Rush of Blood was Coldplay's only good album, I thought Viva La Vida is pretty damn good, and Coldplay are finally starting to synthesize their influences into something resembling an original sound (I'm sure that Chris Martin crosses himself before shows, mumbling "to the Bono and to the Edge and to the Larry and Adam). If Coldplay have one good album in them, it may be Viva La Vida, or it may be Rush of Blood, or even Parachutes, but none are that much better than the others. If Coldplay have one GREAT album in them, then I don't think they've had it yet, but I do think that it's coming.
As for other bands (and I'm not sure you were addressing your question to me, but what the hell) I can't think of any off the top of my head. All the bands that come to my mind have had several good albums, or I wouldn't remember them. Who else did you have in mind?

Yeah, they did that in Charlotte. During the second set (one of these was set up out on the lawn) they did an accoustic cover of "Billie Jean" which was pretty good.
I saw them this past weekend in Charlotte, NC. A solid show, they played hard, definitely not coasting.
Elbow was one of their openers and were fantastic, btw.
I like clever word play.
Not to bad for Coldplay...I'll up it to a 1.
I was going to put my own positive comment in, but its nice to find one to agree with instead. I give this an 8. I've bought the whole damn CD entirely due to RP.
(And, I have to say, to my Sennheiser headphones: RP sounds absolutely fantastic in these - far better than any hi-fi.)
So sad about Coldplay ... I feel sorry for them, gazillions of dollars and all.
as in retch
(well, that takes care of my emoticon craving, sorry 'bout that)
no i don't. the grammy's have pretty much been a vortex of suck as long as i can remember.
"Vortex of suck". That's a good one. Vortex of suck. HA!
This song sounds lush in my headphones.
no i don't. the grammy's have pretty much been a vortex of suck as long as i can remember.
disliked it months ago, now just really, really sick of it. white snow and all.
7'd it months ago. 8'd it now.
Love that buzzy geetar, as well.
disliked it months ago, now just really, really sick of it. white snow and all.
i don't know Gabriels music too much, but there's a very special, moving, rhythmic 'feel' in this song indeed. Is that what you did mean?
no i don't. the grammy's have pretty much been a vortex of suck as long as i can remember.
Ah, I think that "can't stand Coldplay" is the popular opinion.
At least around here.
But at least this album is a step in the right direction for this band.
Agreed, but nothing could save that pathetic excuse for an awards show.
Remember when the Grammys actually meant something? You hear more talent in 15 minutes of listening to RP than you would watching that whole show.
The music industry has completely lost any significance in the world of music lovers.
Like us.
I've always thought the Grammys were pretty meaningless, even more than other awards shows.

Turns out it was a Coldplay song that won "Song of the Year" on the Grammys.
So...DONE WITH COLDPLAY. Go away, now. Join Hootie and the Blowfish on the Yuba County Fair circuit.
Yah, me too.
Put this song on ice for 5 years, then start playing again. If it sounds ok, then well, ok, otherwise, move along.
For mainstream music, they know how to capture a mood.
I like it; good stuff for easy listening. Can't listen to King Crimson all the time....
Joe Satri-something beat them to it...
did Satriani and coldplay settle this dispute yet?
So please watch out where the huskies go....
Joe Satri-something beat them to it...
ok...better than their other stuff.
still average though.
Good for you. But if you will come to more industrious regions you will see for sure that there... IT IS NOT WHITE.
grey, yellow, dirty whatever, but not damned white.
Dude! I live in Detroit! You want industry? We got it — or at least had it. You want grime? We still have plenty of that! The snow is white for about a day and a half after it falls then it turns all sorts of lovely shades of gray.
Motown es muerte . . . . RIP
There's a throwback quality to them.
For some reason, watching them live and especially on this track; I find there's something very FGTH "Welcome To The Pleasuredome" about it. Mash that up with some U2 "Sunday Bloody Sunday". Let's not think for a moment that Chris Martin is anything close to the frontman that Bono is now or ever was, or that Coldplay musically can even hold U2's jocks. As a vocalist; Martin pales even to Holly Johnson of FGTH.
Some good hooks here and there on their first release, but really so far I just haven't heard anything from them that sticks. It's all pretty forgettable, really. "The Cure" wrote better songs that sounded similar.
