High and dry in the long hot day
Lost and lonely in every way
Got the flats all around me sky up above
I need a little water of love
I've been too long lonely and my heart feels pain
Crying out for some soothing rain
I believe I have taken enough
I need a little water of love
Water of love deep in the ground
No water here to be found
Some day baby when the river runs free
It'll carry that water of love to me
There's a bird up in a tree sitting up high
Waiting for me to die
If I don't get some water soon
I'll be dead and gone in the afternoon
Once I had a woman I could call my own
Once I had a woman now my woman is gone
Once there was a river now there's a stone
You know it's evil when you're living alone
Lost and lonely in every way
Got the flats all around me sky up above
I need a little water of love
I've been too long lonely and my heart feels pain
Crying out for some soothing rain
I believe I have taken enough
I need a little water of love
Water of love deep in the ground
No water here to be found

love love this album, just good quality music
I honestly credit their first album as what saved my life as I descended into alcoholism. I got sober in ‘83 and was lucky enough to have seen Dire Straits in ‘85, my first sober concert.
Got to see Mark Knopfler solo in 2019 before the world went to shit. He is absolutely brilliant.

I have seen the face of God, and he looks an awful lot like Mark Knopfler.

I would posit that while (God knows) there are lots of dumb-ass Yanks, most RP listeners don't all into that classification.

IMHO Mark Knopler is an unrecognized National Treasure...
Pls continue to play this and other solid choices.
I have been feeling guilty about listening to Radio Paradise for free for so long.
I am 70 years olds and am sending you a $100.00 donation with my thanks for the inspired work you do.

Always one of my favs from their first album.
Gotta admit, though I've heard it a thousand times, that is SOME GUITAR ARTISTRY, and it can still get into my head and stay on repeat for hours at a time!

Love this version.
The bass playing is more prominent, than on the studio version. I like it.
If I don't get some wiskey soon
I'll be dead and gone in the afternoon
rate 8

Beautiful :-)
What a guitarist!
What a treat! Thanks, RP!

this is especially sweet : ) (not a great version of this awesome song imo)
When I was on graveyard shift right after my first child was born, I would queue up this song at low volume and walk around the bedroom bouncing her gently in my arms, singing softly. Never fails to evoke tender feelings.

I also agree. Never enough.

Awesome.
You could never play too much Dire Straits.
Please keep it coming.

A National Treasure of Scotland or England? Perhaps more importantly: Does the "Water of Love" surround the "Tunnel of Love"?

How could share this with youngsters? deep life ever
This is pure Dire Straits. This was my first ever CD I purchased - Dubai airport, 1989, during a stopover to Sydney, when it was just a few palms, two skyscrapers and lots of camels. Communique album never gets old.
Since 20 years a pleasure to hear this song. Thanks to Mark + David Knopfler, John Illsley and Pick Withers.
Amazing live version.
There are too much better songs in this album. May be "Six Blade Knife" the best one.
Good technical skills, but no inspiration as usual. They deliver the same sound in studio and on stage. Lacking brilliance. Boring and MK does not help much.
Awesome.

sounds real good,
recorded 22 July, 1978.
.
the first time I heard Dire Straits was 1978 when going in to see a friend and heard this while waiting for him to open the door and I thought did JJ Cale put out a new one I don't know about?
it was 'Sultans Of Swing' playing

haha, still not Water of Love...
The soundtrack to boredom.
What can I say about one of the tunes I most enjoy playing on the guitar (though it is difficult to emulate Knopfler's sensitivity, we keep on trying!). I also agree about the film, I was watching it again with my family few weeks ago and it is as a beautiful story as the music is. a10
Hey Bill G: thank you for playing Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler in general, but you did not just play "Water of Love" from "Dire Straits Live At the BBC" although this RP Web page is for that track.
I think we just heard a live version of "Wild Theme" from Knopfler's soundtrack to the brilliant film "Local Hero"—perhaps the version found on "Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of Dire Straits" .
Jes sayin'.

I see there are listeners who rate this down the scale. Like, a 1. WTF? Is heavy death metal your cup of joe?

From Local Hero. One of the greatest movie soundtracks ever. So beautiful. Terrific, gorgeous and life affirming movie too.

The guitar solo brought me in from varnishing outside in the cockpit. The style sounded so familiar yet...I had to see who was playing. My man Mark! His superb playing caught me again. An 8 right off the bat.
Local Hero. Great movie.
This live version (of Wild Theme) is on Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of Dire Straits.
That wasn't Water of Love?? That was Wild Theme from the Local Hero soundtrack.
I'm sobbing because I wish that I could play like that. The man gets time.

Sweet! This turned into the Local Hero soundtrack. Nice to hear a completely different version.
Did God wear a sweat band?
And wrist bands. Like all the greats!
