English trees in my garden
They planted seeds in a faraway land
In between the palms and the succulent grow

They lose their leaves in the winter
Mark the seasons for him and for her
Once upon a time in the fallen snow
Up against the sky made a silhouette show

England cries and she plays for him
Her chords entwined like a requiem
And though it's springtime and color is new
In Regent's Park I will mourn for you

And I must be wise somehow
'Cause my heart's been broken down

It's so far to fall
And so hard to climb
Nothing sadder I know
Than the passing of time

You won't forget me
You won't forget me

Like english trees in my garden
Summer's missed you my darling
All your crimes are forgiven
All your crimes are forgiven

And I must be wise somehow

(You won't forget me)
(You won't forget me)

And England cries

There's English trees in my garden

This song links me to the grief surrounding the loss of a family member in 2007.

“And I must be wise somehow
'Cause my heart's been broken down”

Beautiful words and typically gorgeous Neil Finn melody.  Time heals, and so too does music.

I'm with you. Definitive "Ho-Hum" from a band that could do much better.
Nice!

All CH covers are wonderful!! Like this one!

THE ONLY REAL BEATLES!
"9"

PS
Sorry, butt now I really laugh my ass off!!!!
Avarage rating 6.4...???
WHAAAAAAT...?

No, it's not about being a fan!
It's about quality - AND MADNESS!

A rating of 6.4 is way-way under avarage on RP.
And that is crazy!!! And wrong!!!

Interesting that a song with (almost) nothing but positive comment only rates a 6.6.

Contrast that with any Radiohead song, for example, that usually rates over 7 but incites a flood of vitriol.

I too am hoping with (all my heart) that they are working on a new album.
Does anyone know if they are working on a new CH album?

Back to this board after all these months to say to thanks to everyone who took the time to explain the lyrics. My daughter was at Regent's College in Regent's Park last semester, where I visited her, and I adore Neil Finn, and I had seen the Finn Bros. in PA shortly before Paul's death, so there were reasons for my inquiry.

Paul's presence is overwhelming on this album. I read just yesterday that the cover depicts depression (the monster) devouring a man (Paul). An amazing album, really.

Thanks for that! Makes a lot of sense.

Could you (or anyone) take a shot at interpreting this song's lyrics? I need help getting the connection between planting a tree in a faraway land and Regent's Park in London. What is he mourning? A lot of Neil Finn's lyrics have a very dark side.
I would guess it has something to do with Paul Hester who hung himself in a park... I thought it was in England, but according to the wonderful wide world web, it would appear to have been in Melbourne. Sad stuff.
Yes, Paul died in Melbourne. But Neil was on tour in England at the time. From the LIVE ON EARTH tourbook, Neil writes...
"English Trees" When Paul died I went across the road from my hotel in London and wandered around amongst the trees of Regent's Park which were just staring to burst forth with the colors of spring. When I went home to NZ 10 days later I wrote this song looking out of my window at the huge oak trees that were starting to lose their leaves. Those old giants stand in the middle of the palms and succulents in our garden and seem to be transplanted from another time, another world. It got me thinking, then writing... Sharon and Liam sang along.
I think it was on Neil's own website at the time, that he mentioned that he had received the news of Paul's passing via a phonecall from his wife who was back home in New Zealand. The lyrics to "She Called Up" (also from TIME ON EARTH) appear to be about this. I've not read anything that directly confirms it, but Neil's comments from the tour book do hint at it...
"She Called Up" This song is a musical romp that was brought to life out of a reggae jam at RealWorld studios. It has a contradictory nature, a really upbeat, almost maniacal musical arrangement, with lyrics about the arrival of some shocking news. It makes me think of dancing skeletons on the day of the dead. Elroy thinks we should have kept it as a reggae song. Perhaps it will revert back to its roots on stage one night.

Very thought provoking, I just moved it up to a 9. Better after a few listens. Lovely lyrics.
but DAMN...Bill plays way too much of this on a daily basis.

I think that I am a "Finn"atic!

Yes!!! I was at that show as well! What an incredible evening..... looking forward to more from them. I agree this CD took a few listenings to "get"..... but it really is wonderful and quite powerful with Neil's lyrics.
Triple that, great show!! I am an Atlanta radio host and was with my buddy from Creative Loafing, he spotted Matt Sherrod in the parking lot during Liam Finn's set, searching for cell reception, and Matt couldn't have been nicer (he wouldn't have known who either of us were, obviously). He actually told us the setlist wasn't complete yet and did we have any requests?!!! If you enjoyed "Italian Plastic" during that show, you're welcome ;) !

Totally agree with you there, Ruthless... Saw them at the Tabernacle in Atlanta this fall (with Liam Finn and Pete Yorn opening). Magical night for sure...

I like Crowded House and the Finn brothers but DAMN...Bill plays way too much of this on a daily basis. 8:48 am - Crowded House - English Trees 7:04 am - Neil Finn - Driving Me Mad 3:41 am - Crowded House - Recurring Dream
Memories of George Harrison here. Like it.

Sign of a great album! Extremely classy band, great songsmiths! Nice Reg Mombasa cover art.
Why does "Crowded House" always leave me feeling so empty? J/K

So true, it's a wierd phenomenon... not like the songs are difficult to listen to or anything.. maybe it just takes a while to appreciate how they are crafted or something. nice one Lexie!

Yay...my upload finally graduated to the playlist! I think this song is so moving, both lyrically and melodiously. It even makes me cry, sometimes... One of the best on the new CD, IMHO. Love Neil's harmonies...just LOVE them. ruthless wrote:
