Long way going to
Get my medicine
Sky's the autumn grey of a lonely wren

Piano from a window played
Gone tomorrow, gone yesterday

I found it in the street
At first I did not see
Lying at my feet
A trampled rose

Passing the hat in church
It never stops going around

You never pay just once
To get the job done

What I done to me,
I done to you
What happened to the trampled rose?

In the muddy street
With the fireworks and leaves

A blind man with a cup I asked
Would he sing 'Kisses Sweeter Than Wine'

I know that rose,
Like I know my name
The one I gave my love,
It was the same
Now I find it in the street,
A trampled rose

You do realize the album is of both Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, right? (read the text)
Better than most of the other bits of this collaboration I’ve heard here. Solid 5.
pretty much any Tom Waits cover makes me happy. He deserves to be honored with covers by his songwriting a lone. doesnt matter if I like the cover or not so this song gets an 8.
Why is there a picture of Robert Plant alongside this song?   The singer is Allison Krauss.
Sad drama.
Plant and Krause were touring this album and I got to see them perform at Hardly Strictly back then. They did a great version of Battle of Evermore too.
Where's Plant? Was he in the bathroom while they recorded this?
A Tom Waits piece!

The exact opposite for me. This is weird-eeeeeered. Her earlier work is heavenly.

SCIENTOLOGIST!!  Oh, wait, that's Beck or somebody....

Liked it enough to tab over and rate it!
Interesting I can see where some of this ties into Plants latest album.  He mentioned in an interview that some of the stuff on the new album he tried with Alison Krauss but it did not work or was not the time for it.

No Zep tour...and what does that have to with this very good song, anyway?

My favourite track from this wonderful album. Haunting. Alison's voice is phenomenal.
Edit: Whoops, looking back at the track list, "Please Read the Letter" is actually my favourite track, this is my second.
Beautiful album... Always glad to hear this here.
Kraus.
You either get her or you don't.
Not much room for compromise.
I like her yet she does annoy me at times.
But a genuine person and a great collaborator.

Awwwww—- thank you  ♥

Somebody needs to trample this CD.
What are you all—- a bunch of little girls in a mall somewhere?  OMG!!!!   I think I see what's going on, but its like watching a slow wreck.  What a miserable bunch.
Nope....still hate it.
The song that couldn't die.
Annoyingly memorable
So whiny.
Robert Plant...?
Where?
two horrors in a row - this one really suits the awful Mumford and Sons played just before. Oh well, I haven't had a spate of <5s here for a while, but this high pitched squealing really must stop! please!

Not a good song to start off my day on Radio Paradise.  I really hope this doesn't set the tone for the rest of the day... ugh!
Not my taste!

I didn't hear it until it was pointed out, but I can hear the restraint in her voice.  Makes me really wonder what her voice would sound like if she really went all out and wailed.  Is she afraid of her voice cracking or sounding imperfect?  One has to look no further then Thom Yorke, Tom Waits, or even (for the more pop music minded) Kings of Leon to find examples of imperfect voices making fantastic music.  Of course, I suppose if she pushed it too hard she might risk those silky smooth pipes and wouldn't be able to make the kind of music she's been making for years.

Alison DID have a career before she hooked up with Plant. Play more AK!! But leave this album to marinate for a bit.

Just a wild guess, but maybe it was the keening.  Reminds me that you can hire people to show up and cry at a funeral.

I knew I'd heard the phrasing, and those notes, before. Check out the song "Island" from Heather Nova's album Oyster; exactly the same.

Alison kept thousands spellbound with this song at the RED ROCKS last year. This was a highlight for me.
This is the voice that the girl from Bat For Lashes wishes she had...

Me too. Great banjo............

Happy birthday, Alison Krauss!

I like this CD, I think its pretty enjoyable. What I dont understand is why they made a cover on one of the FEW weak songs Tom Waits has released. I dont even think this is a good song with Mr Waits, and I'm a BIG fan.

Robert doesn't smoke, he quit in the mid 80s. Guess I am revealing my neediness now.

But...

This album won lot's of Grammys. That makes it very popular. Doesn't that mean it sucks now and you shouldn't play it anymore? You know like Sting or U2? {#Rolleyes}

Very good interpretation. I love Plant songs but this ones is far away better on is original version by Tom Waits

Not entirely. I had higher expections when I bought the disc, being a big fan of both artists, but right now I'm of the mind there are only a couple of strong songs there. It might just be me though, I'm gonna keep looking for a while.
A friend told me to buy this album, and I have not liked much of it that I have heard. But I like the feel of this song...so I am in the minority here eh?
Weakest track on an otherwise good recording.
I hardly ever comment but this song (at low volume) is really annoying me. I had to hit mute until it was over. I also felt compelled to rate it a 1 and to comment! I normally like Alison and Robert but I just can't get into this song.

MUTE MUTE MUTE!
How 'bout following this with Arlington by the Wailin' Jennys...
Why are songs sung by females so haunting? Must be a hormonal thing.
TrÚs beau morceau , trÚs belle voix d'Alisson Krauss. Du miel !!!
I love those beats at the end. Perfect ending to an eerie song.
This song has just the right amount of Robert Plant
What's with the album cover? Looks like they just threw a water balloon at Jimmy Page . . .
That's three very somber songs in a row. Mondays are hard enough. (I do like this song, though.)

Cool progression of songs. They flow together really well.
She doesn't know it, and I can't explain why, but I will forever associate this song with Agnes's best friend, Mo.

ahhh geez - i'm quite irked with myself having not remembered that. I own that album and he is one of my favorites, but I do find his version of this song one of the rare songs of his that I will skip past on occasion. many thanks for the clarification

I'd agree, though I gave this song a 4. The rest of the album is really strong. That incessant wail just turns this track sour for me. Pro Tools abuse - copy, copy, copy...
Kind of roots country..ish
Ouch...my head now hurts....make it stop!!!!
Wow, direct segue from Neko -> Allison. That's a mighty one-two punch!
She's sublime.... him I could do without.
I'll confess to whatever you want if it gets the complainers to shut up. King_Balt wrote:

Yes, and even my wife (who hates Led Zeppelin, mainly because of Plant's vocals) loves it.
It's growing on me...begrudgingly...simply by familiarity.
Wow, what's up with all the haters? This song is beautiful, her voice is beautiful...I love it.
Not my song...

I've tried and tried to get into this considering the talent and reputations of the artists and the considerable RP airplay, but I just can't. it's a three for me.
way too much airplay for such an annoyingly whiney song

Fully agree! This is a really good album, but I think this song is a real clunker. It would be fine if they didn't go to that "wail" well so often.

Lots of tin ears out there but that's OK. This is a beautiful Tom Waits song covered by an unlikely but beautiful voice. If you only want to listen to Robert Plant, please, listen to a Led Zeplin CD and reserve your disingenuous comments for another time.
Bill, are you serious right now?
