Got a black magic woman
I got a black magic woman
Yes, I got a black magic woman
Got me so blind I can't see
But she's a black magic woman
And she's tryin' to make a devil out of me

Don't turn your back on me baby
Don't turn your back on me baby
Yes, don't turn your back on me baby
You're messin' around with your tricks
Don't turn your back on me baby
'Cause you might just break up my magic stick

You got your spell on me baby
You got your spell on me baby
Yes, you got your spell on me baby
You're turning my heart into stone
I need you so bad, magic woman, I can't leave you alone

Yes, I need you so bad
Well, I need you darling
Yeah, I need you darling
Yes, I want you love me
I want you love me
Whoa, I want you love me, ah
Whoh, yeah
Oh, whoa, baby
Yes, I need your love
Oh, I need your love so bad
I want you love me

what is it?

a bossa nova?
I was today years old when I learned that this was the original. Seems a common theme in the posts here, so I am not so upset that it took me to my 52nd year to learn this.

Goodbye, Christine.  You were a  real talent, a very good songwriter, and -- I imagine -- a wonderful conversation partner.
Love this. Improvement suggestion: a group photo that includes Peter Greene in the lineup since this is his version, and the album is focused on him.
Now I know this guy, his name is Mick...   song to one of the great pass times!

Dunno.  Extreme lack of taste perhaps?

hee hee heee...you....like lot of us....thought Santana did this....no....Fleetwood Mac wrote this and Carlos took it and added some salsa and beans.

Truly....did....not....know this existed until BillG dropped the needle on this track. I like this "cover", too, it just has that great groove from Mr's Fleetwood and Mac.

Saw Peter Green 20 years ago @ Bimbos I. City - great show. Who was in cried having dinner? Santana. Obviously he was there to play & did the song -awesome!
 Steely_D wrote:

You guys see how Santana stole Peter Green's idea and ran with it?

"Stole" is not the correct word; Santana covered it.  Green (or his publishing company) receives royalties for it.
The mix sounds odd to my ears - I don't know whether I'm used to another version, but something didn't do it for me with this old favourite.

I agree with your preference, but this is a bit of a relic. Despite some interesting guitar fills, this doesn't rock or sway. It really feels like some Brits rehearsing their way through some Latin music that really caught their interest the other day...

Except one of the Brits actually wrote it.

Nothing less than a Godly rating of 10 for the Green God.
Undeniably the best blues guitarist to come out of England so sad that he’s left us but his music will live on,just love this track❤️ RIP Pete🙏
Ought to follow this up with Gypsy Queen by Gabor Szabo

Always interesting to listen again to a version from the artist that inspired the later definitive cover.

Early Fleetwood Mac is the best.  Bears no resemblance to the late 70's to {#Motor}current.  Nice segue, Bill.

I've never heard this. Who knew?
Santana did wonders with this song, and that will likely always be my favorite, but when I hear this I can understand why Carlos was inspired.

Nice segue, Bill:  a Santana favorite followed by the original BMW.  Hang the turkeys who think this is anything but an extraordinary cut.

I'm giving it a 9 for now.  That gives me room to move it to a 10 next time I hear it.
Delicious. {#Guitarist}
Good to have also this version!

Always nice to hear the original but I prefer Carlos' rave-up.

You make it sound as if F. Mac were the only ones. Substance use or abuse happens with all types of entertainers and celebrities, not just in music but film, art, sport, and so on, not to mention the general public as well.
Awesome artist.     youtube him doing "Jumpin' at shadows"    above and beyond words
I believe this song is based on "I Loved Another Woman" from Fleetwood Mac's debut album (often referred to as Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac).

our local college station plays old F Mac, so I wikipedia'd him (Peter Green):
"Green inspired B. B. King to say, "He has the sweetest tone I ever heard; he was the only one who gave me the cold sweats." Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page have both lauded his guitar playing."
I like this more than the Santana version...but it still is as effective as a wet match.
Wow...never knew!  Was this pre-Then Play On?  I should have been paying more attention when I was young...  Did you know there are two versions of Then Play On?
Love this band and this song!

awesome original version that Santana later turned into a hit in 1970 with his cover...

Peter Green, one of the founders of Fleetwood Mac, was an incredible guitar player, singer, and songwriter for the band until he went schizophrenic and discovered religion...

Excellent song, love old Fleetwood Mac. I have always liked this much more than Santana's version, guitars overshadow essence of this song, this is much more raw and still has excellent guitar work.
Wicked!!! Thanks RP, for making an old classic fresh again. Terrific version!
really do love the old stuff. have a decent vinyl collection and have most of this stuff in the stack. listen to it often...along with buffalo springfield, delaney and bonnie, dylan, early stones and the like. there is just something about where music was back then that keeps me coming back for more

Like Pink Floyd co-founder Syd Barrett, Peter was an acid casualty way back when. He rebounded somewhat with his Splinter band, but somewhat is the operative word. I've checked out some of the his Splinter band's work and none of it comes even close to measuring up what Greeny was writing, playing and singing back in the late '60s.

What with the demise of Peter, Jeremy, Danny and now Bob Welch, Fleetwood Mac has a tainted history when it comes to personnel survival. It's amazing that John didn't fully succumb to the bottle and that Stevie didn't OD on pharma coke.
Man, those drums and wicked licks are Pure Psycho!  LOVE IT!
True enough. However, I don't think he's exactly a household name, especially when compared with the name of the band he helped spawn.

One legend gives rise to another. I gotta give this an 8 because it's a mighty cool groove, and the way it shifts to a straight blues piece that Los Lobos or Stevie Ray probably liked.
I'm just glad its in tune for a change.
One of the coolest CD boxes and this song is magical, well almost, since I don't believe in magic.
I like that !
J'aime ça !

Thank you, Bill.
Wow. Being on probably the younger side of RP listeners, the only Fleetwood Mac I ever knew growing up was with Stevie, Lindsey, Christine, etc. RP has introduced me to the early stuff, and I really like it. I had no idea that this wasn't an original Santana song. I like both versions, but the local classic rock station plays Santana's to death. I also like all the various lineups of Fleetwood Mac.

Ah Fleetwood Mac when it was a proper blues/rock band. Before the pop-girlies ruined it....lol. I love these old tracks from them.
I know all the cool kids and well knowledged older musical experts are chic to say how great early Fleetwood Mac is, but I just don't get it. Rumours is still their masterpiece IMO.

Well spotted. Excellent and solid drumming.

I'd have had trouble not putting in an occasional mini cymbal comedy 'ding'.

Ah, this is the ringtone on my phone for when my GF calls. Early FM has always been a favorite of mine.

Peter Green was a bad@$$ guitarslinger!
Hearing this track just now prompted me to read the Wikipedia article on the band.  Interesting article.  I did not know that Christine McVie was Christine Perfect before she married John McVie! {#Curtain}

As much as I like Santana's version, the original is still, and far and away, the best!!!  10
Love it.

I didn't know Bill Murray did a version of this!

But really, I like this MUCH better than Santana's version.

Eric Clapton's autobiography is a very very good read for the personal view he allows us to have of him. But a byproduct is a music history lesson. And part of that is the role early Fleetwood Mac had on the 60's English Blues Rock scene. FM was every bit as involved as the Yardbirds, John Mayhall, and many others.

Right. Read Fleetwood, if you can find a copy.

Nice Begin of the new year. Thanx, Bill!
I had no idea this was the original!  Fleetwood Mac ROCKS!
YES!!!
I'm enjoying Fleetwood Mac like I never have before. Especially since this isn't Santana.
Bill, how about Green Manalishi !?

You can play Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac any time. Santana's cover is great, but the original Black Magic Woman puts up a helluva fight. Those kids were playin' some killer blues.
