summertime, ice cream at the beach and not a care in the world
'68. An older brother away in 'Nam; our oldest brother withering away from a disease that would fully consume him. War, Riots, MLK and RFK taken. Upheaval. I was in grade school, just trying to be a kid. Yet, the most critical education of all was happening in our streets and far away jungles. Madness. Chicago exploded. Nixon, Humphrey, and Wallace gagged us. It seemed to be coming true--things fall apart, the center cannot hold. Yet, from some inexplicably serene and visionary place came this song along with Grazing in the Grass, and Classical Gas to assuage us, if only momentarily. Mercy.
As a Gen X'er the original song was before my time, and is fantastic, but this brings to mind Swing Out Sister's version. It was played constantly on the radio in September-October 1992 and takes me back to those days.
That summer in the 60s with my girlfriend. Good times!
I remember this blaring out of a million radios at the time, and how the bright, sunny, cheerful piano and horns sounded good even on the tiniest and tinny-est of them... In the middle of great political and social upheaval, struggles for rights, War protests, etc., we could at least enjoy precious bits of bliss on the radio waves.

Well, okay. But you must do it soulfully.

LOL! I rate this diverse track an 8 too. Heck, I might even rate the 2LiveCrew track, that heavily samples this tune, and is not as perverse as a lot of their stuff, as an 8 as well, simply for nostalgia's sake. Of course that level of perversion is not in BillG's regular diversity laden wheelhouse. LLRP!!

Swing Out Sister does a version of this with words entitled Am I the Same Girl that's pretty cool too.

I actually didn't mind hearing this this morning (although AM radio did everything it possibly could to cause a lifelong annoyance anytime I heard its opening notes).

I wasn't denying that; I was commenting about calligraphy. What you say about radio is sad but true. Anyhow, this is a great tune.

Calligraphy isn't really a "lost art"; there are probably just fewer people who can do it well anymore, but it still counts.

Not to brag or anything, but back in the way back when I was a DJ at a small AM station (later AM/FM) I prided myself in being able to arrange songs so that I didn't need an instrumental to get me into the top-of-the hours news and station ID.
I might as well be talking about a lost art like calligraphy because I'm pretty sure this is not a "skill" (such as it was) that counts for much.

Backtiming was an art. You were lucky if you got to rearrange the play order. A lot of us didn't.
For a brief time, I got to use Wall of Voodoo- Mexican Radio into the 3PM ABC news. What Does He Say?

AM DJs used to love to play this song at the ends of their shows. They could talk over it, and they could cut it short, since it was an instrumental. To me, this song means the top of the hour is getting close.

Nice version of a "soulful" standard. Simple piano, simple orchestration, simple background rhythm ... very pleasant.

Summer drive with the top down :)

nooo this means Joe Bourne might be coming on soon! run away!
I remember this! But somehow thought it was Hugh Masakela (SP??)....they would be nice to hear also!
This song just made my day! Put a much needed smile on my face. Thank you.
This is going onto my MP3 player - I could definitely spend time in the sun listening to it!
Yes, definitely a good times song.

i knew i recognized this song from a film. . .and a quick google search reveals, yes . . .the parent trap (later version). kind of embarrassing, guess that comes from catching too many of those relentless re-runs on cable tv. . .
Is there an elevator around here?
That was Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass, I think Spanish Flea was the tune

Boring, redundant, and worn out tune.
Oh yes! I love this song. If I had to imagine what a good mood sounds like, this is the tune that would pop in my head! Great piano and bass guitar. And horns never hurt!
smooooth.
been a long while since i've heard that one
This is just a great, funky tune, straight up, no rocks, no chaser!
Reminds me of Grazin' in the Grass.
Dyn-O-Mite! Right up there with Green Onions.
Full of Soul! Great stuff.
Man this made my commute so much easier this morning to Philly.
Good groove...
I brighten up every time I hear this tune. Strut indeed.
We apologize for this break in transmission...normal programming will resume shortly
Reminds me of my childhood full of Philly soul music (ok, they're from Chicago, forgive me ...)
Excellent "Summer Drawing to a Close Here in the Sacramento Valley" music.
The short guy kinda creeps me out. Looks WAAAY to ambitious for the style of music. Well, his smile anyway.
