There was a guy
An under water guy who controlled the sea
Got killed by ten million pounds of sludge
From New York and New Jersey

This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven

The creature in the sky
Got sucked in a hole
Now there's a hole in the sky

And the ground's not cold
And if the ground's not cold
Everything is gonna burn
We'll all take turns, I'll get mine too

This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven

Rock me Joseph, Alberto, Santiago

If Man is five, if Man is five, if Man is five
Then the Devil is six, then the Devil is six
The Devil is six, the Devil is six and if the Devil is six
Then God is seven , then God is seven

This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven

Bumped it to 9 for the sheer joy of the segue from Nick Cave & TBS's Bring It On. Where can you hear your favorite bands playing some of your favorite songs one after the other??!!! RP ruleszzzz (so actually the extra point goes to Bill and co ;))

It's time for your pudding, grandpa.
i could live without this. Critics darlings - i dont know why - maybe i am just a pleb
i love this song so much. never gets old.
A lot of the work of this group relates to the spirit of the angry, frustrated young kid still deep down in my soul who wants to smash things up, make gratifyingly wild noises, and get those feelings out. Therapy; love it!
Nick Cave, followed by Pixies, now I just need some Violent Femmes or Hüsker Dü, Or, maybe 🤔 both?!

Love this song - I can't hear it without thinking of Bloodhound Gang's Fire Water Burn:

I'm not black like Barry White, no, I am white like Frank Black is
So, if man is five and the devil is six, then that must make me seven
This honkey's gone to heaven
They have enough cult groupies that I can say they suck!

30 years ago I layed this song to death when I was working as a DJ ...until my boss took the record awy...

At least since the R&B music of the late 1940s and into what became rock & roll.  Ask Wynonie Harris, Tiny Bradshaw, Big Joe Turner, Little Richard, and of course Screamin' Jay Hawkins.
i love there music .
went to see them bout 4 years ago .Cesaria , israel .
most beautifull anciant romen amphytheater.
allmost fell asleep .
most boring concert ever.
I love how they play and sing this like something the angry young kid who still lives inside me would throw down in a righteous fit!

How does he deliver that "THEN GOD IS 7" line without completely tearing up his voice? Ouch!
Produced by Gil Norton, if I remember right. He also did James and The Triffids.

disc 2 of this package has a most excellent live show from 1990

Can never play too much Pixies!

Yes!  This track is reminiscent of Jim Carroll.  Especially the vocal delivery.

Saw him in Rochester, NY. Stood right in front of the stage. Couldn't hear right for several days afterward.

Well, that's what I think too, but if you look at the ratings, we are way in the minority. So they obviously have something that we don't hear. Surely worth the wait (on mute) to hear what Bill/Rebecca will play next on this wonderful station.

I read that a lot.  Honestly, I find it utterly incomprehensible.  They are not that good.
I think they are singing "this monk has gone to heaven."  It's gotta be a play on words either way.

holy cow ! lmao!

Always a great contribution. And always loved the obvious Lou Reed-style vocals.

arguably the most pop. I'd vote for Here Comes Your Man,  though as poppier

Song reminds me on the recent disaster in Japan, and makes me wondering what is man's place in the Universe?
Greetings from Serbia!

This song is at almost twenty-five years old, hardly a new "offering".  The members of the band have gone on to quite successful careers and probably need not worry about "day jobs".
Did anyone hear where that monkey went....?
 CascadianPDX wrote:

Given all the hits they've had and all the $$$ they've made, I think the Pixies don't need to work anymore.

But it's nice of you to think about them.

GREAT SET!
The Church - Reptile
Neil Young - Throw Your Hatred Down
The Pixies - Monkey Gone to Heaven

Despite the screeching, this song grows on me more every time I hear it. 7>8
I had an odd dream last night that I had to listen to this song, and that I didn't enjoy it as much as I usually do.   It's like a dream come true!
I bought this album from eBay, surely one of the best music recordings ever. Kim Deal has dealt some of the best basslines in music history.
Classic!!
Reminds me of Jim Carroll's "Work Not Play"

I still remember seeing The Pixies for the first time on David Sanborn's "Night Music" broadcast out of NYC late on Sunday nights. I was up, denying the need for sleep, a Sunday in early 1990. It - the band, and the show - was ELECTRIFYING. The hair stood up on the back of my neck. Black Francis made me a believer that night. God WAS 7! I hadn't known!    And I did not need sleep.

I first heard this song on RP.  "What a great Lou Reeds song," I thought.

I've since made up for this gap in my rock education by buying The Pixie's CDs.  Thanks, Bill!

This is one song I can listen to, back-to-back, over and over again . . . It must scratch somewhere deep I itch.

In fact I'd almost go as far as to mention the "O" word. But I won't because I don't want to start off a series of posts
detailing the exact frequency which this song comes up on RP.

Funny, since this was the first album of theirs I ever owned (and was probably the big single off the album) it doesn't seem lesser known to me (but then, I was late to the game as I often am).  Totally agree on it being cool.  I guess I'd consider "Cactus" a lesser known song (plus one of my favorites). Such a perverted little tune.

Hi,
Je ne suis pas OK avec toi sur The Pixies. They were a major alternatve band at late 80's. A real good mix of American with English feeling, coming from Boston. Are they the meaning of Mayflower boat ??
