I never seen you looking so bad
My funky one
You tell me that your superfine mind
Has come undone

Any major dude with half a heart
Surely will tell you my friend
Any minor world that breaks apart
Falls together again
When the demon is at your door
In the morning it won't be there no more
Any major dude will tell you
Any major dude will tell you

Have you ever seen a squonk's tears?
Well, look at mine
The people on the street
Have all seen better times

Any major dude with half a heart
Surely will tell you my friend
Any minor world that breaks apart
Falls together again
When the demon is at your door
In the morning it won't be there no more
Any major dude will tell you
Any major dude will tell you

I can tell you all I know
The where to go, the what to do
You can try to run
But you can't hide
From what's inside of you

Any major dude with half a heart
Surely will tell you my friend
Any minor world that breaks apart
Falls together again
When the demon is at your door
In the morning it won't be there no more
Any major dude will tell you

Any major dude will tell you
Any major dude will tell you

I don't think it's pretentiousness, so much as a realisation that what they were doing was really, really special.  I'm a musician and composer and if I ever managed to compose something half as good as their worst song I'd have an ego the size of Donald Trump's.

Heard this on while listening to the Mellow Mix tonight. Admittedly I'm a huge SD fan, there really is no other band quite like Donald & Walter & whomever they drafted into each album. I've been binging on them for a few weeks now, every album. Some say they are dated, some don't get the complexities of the compositions, the extremely detailed arrangements, the blend of jazz & rock & blues, and of course the intelligent weave of the lyrics. To each their own. They remain one of my absolute favorite musicians, composers, & performers since I bought that first album when it came out.

A couple of major dudes to be sure.

Amen to that brother!🙂👍
Today I resigned from the worst job I have ever had.  Lines like "Any minor world that breaks apart, Falls together again" help me look forward to the furure.

All the squonks around my neighbourhood love this song.
I am huge SD fan from the beginning. This is arguably one of my top 5 favorites, and album is brilliant.
I'm not a SD fan and this track typifies their cruisey schmaltzy feel. 2/10 Soz peeps
Steely Dan music conjures fond memories of my past trips to Austin,Tx when I was a younger man.  I really love the vibe there, and this music speaks to me

I totally agree with bashing on mid-reaming's  pretentious, ridiculous, and h8ful commentary on Steely.  But placing his/her utter tripe unredacted in your comment allows true garbage to float to the top of the board.  So I must down vote to lower the sludge beneath the surface.

this one is always a comfort. brilliance.
It's interesting to read all the comments and controversial discussions about Steely Dan and songs like "Any major dude ..". Maybe my English is not good enough to get in all comments the "message", and I never tried to understand the complete lyrics (up to now).

For me a lot of their songs "touch" me, they trigger emotions like this piece does. Maybe its because its linked to some experience in my life, maybe its because I like the guitar, and maybe, in case I was able to get the "message" directly, the lyrics etc.. Whatever it is, this is what makes me "like" or "less like". For me this deserves a 8-9.

I bought this album through one of those record clubs when I was 12 in 1975 because I liked Rikki Don't Lose That Number, but I always loved this song best. It has really spoken to me during more than one difficult part of my life. It still does.

Fagen identifies himself as a sociopath from New Jersey. Does he thus admit that he, himself, is not likeable? His and Walter's music, however, is not only likeable, but timeless.

This a really thoughtful comment and you are certainly justified in feeling the way you do. Fagan and Becker met at Bard College and both grew up in comfortable New York City suburbs. If you listen to a lot of their lyrics, their themes revolve around sex, drugs, and crime more than preppy culture, "Reeling in the Years" notwithstanding. In fact, a lot of the material gets really dark at times - more cynicism than satire. But the music is rooted in complex jazz rhythms which can be off putting to the typical fan of rock. Still, I love all these aspects of their work.

One of my favorites.

A rare Steely Dan song  in that it is devoid of SD's typical cynicism and sarcasm.   Instead we hear genuine empathy.

Have you ever seen a squonk's tears? Well, look at mine.

The Squonk is probably the world's ugliest animal. So ugly, in fact, that it spends most of its life crying over its cruel fate. Eventually many squonks just dissolve into a puddle of tears.

My first car out of college was a 73 superbeetle with an 8 track. My best friend gave me all his 8 tracks as a present (here take these before I throw them out!). Many Steely Dans in that mix. Somehow, the combination of a low horsepower flat four with a shitty stereo at the beginning of my professional career compares favorably with my turbocharged/intercooled flat four of today with a similar high output stereo

Interestingly I have never encountered Steely Dan hatred until now. Until here on good old RP. I like Steely Dan, especially this album yet I'm diggin on the hatred.
To summarize the legend of the squonk: It is a very ugly creature, and it knows this. Its skin is ill-fitting, and covered with warts and other blemishes, therefore the squonk hides from being seen, and spends much of its time weeping sorrowfully over its own ugliness. Hunters who have attempted to catch squonks have found that the creature is capable of evading capture by dissolving completely into a pool of tears and bubbles when cornered.
Genesis has a great song called Squonk on their album Trick of the Tail I loves me some Dan too
