It translates loosely as "Cinnamon whitey". I'm not sure if it is a direct reference to the South Tucson Sonoran hot dog spot of the same name, but that place is so named because the owner, while from Mexico, is white and red-haired.

The evening I saw these guys, the bass was ridiculously overmiked. Which was f'n A. The whole damned place was a seething mass of testosterone and estrogens

my dog is named "Canela" they said it meant cinnamon. She's a brown chihuahua. Guero means white dude, right?

true - but it could be a restaurant in S. Tucson? - apparently quite a popular expanded taco stand - and a place where the lyrics of this song would make some sense - a lot more than cinnamon colored. 

We just flew out to Tucson for the Calexico Flor de Muertos concert and the next day checked out this place - best Sonoran hot dog in town we are told. 

Best band in the world in my opinion.  I hope they don't catch on too much though, ya know? . . . .

At this side, canelo means, among many other things, silly...

...this was the song which bumped me from fascinated curiosity over one or two obscure plays i'd heard of calexico to taking the plunge and buying two of their albums sight unseen - i've added a lot more calexico to my collection since then...

Speaking of live...just saw them live in Utrecht, Netherlands with Iron & Wine and they were fantastic. This is an incredible band to see live. Amazing energy, mariachi horns, and a huge band (at one point with 13 people onstage). If you have the chance to see Calexico live, I recommend it highly.
