Ooh child things are gonna get easier
Ooh child things'll get brighter
Ooh child things are gonna get easier
Ooh child things'll get brighter.

Someday yeah, we'll put it together and we'll get it undone
Someday when your head is much lighter
Someday yeah, we'll walk in the rays of a beautiful sun
Someday when the world is much brighter.

Ooh things are gonna be easier
Ooh child things'll be brighter
Ooh child things are gonna be easier
Ooh child things'll be brighter.

Someday yeah, we'll put it together and we'll get it undone
Someday when your head is much lighter

Right now.

I find this version quite heartbreaking and moving. I think Beth has chosen to interpret the song from the point of view of a woman who is in the midst of real, crushing despair. I think her "character" in the song is pulling from the depths of what little strength she has left to comfort her small child as they endure an overwhelming sorrow or hardship together. She is saying the words "things are going to get better" not quite believing this or knowing how things can possibly get better, but trying desperately to convince herself. Wonderful performance. jk
Couldn't agree more. Love this version.

I think it is achingly sublime.
The first few times I heard this, I didn't really like it. But now, I thoroughly hate it.

Her singing style took me a long time to get used to. When a friend first played me Trailer Park (might be called Winnebago in the US) I couldn't stand it. After a while though I started to really like it. Have a lot of respect for her ploughing her own furrow as well.
hear here! unique talents are always a little challenging to get used to at first.

I don't like to harp on stuff but can't you hear how offkey she is? I can't believe I'm the only person who is bothered by her vocals. I'll shut up now for I rarely make this many negative comments about a song. I guess this one just really gets on my nerves.

The singing's good but doesn't fit the lyrics - too sad
love it - just chill out

I think this is a great cover. Yes it is different from the original, why else cover a song if you're not going to express something new with it? I like this as it has a nurturing feel whereas the original is more optimistic. Both excellent renditions.
Yuck, slow and sad.
She sounds like she's singing with a mouth full of novacaine. If you're gonna play this song, play the Five Stairsteps dammit! And if you want a sweet cover, play Trey Anastasio's version with the horns! Hell, even Tupac's version is better.
This song is truly awful!! I have been listening to RP for awhile, but this song forced me to register so that I could post a comment about this song. Stop the madness!!! :tapedshut.gif: This song is Beth Orten's "Gigli".

Beth is great, but this is not her best moment. :-s
Ditto. I love her, but this is a little painful.
Oh man, I don't know why I ever liked this to begin with. Makes me worried I may be getting senile. What next? A good rating for a Neil Diamond song? (shudder...)
it's growing on me....if RP keeps playing it I might start to like it.

Oooh child...wait 'til the novocaine wears off before trying to sing... Great tune, but not this version. :ziplip.gif:
Oh no! Not again........
Yes, this woman sounds like she's dying. The original was much prettier....

Isn't it funny what mood and frame of mind can do? I hear this song again today, and it's like fingernails on a blackboard. Changing my original 8 rating...
Yeah, this time this version is bugging me- I'm changing my 7 to a 3. I really love the original version, this one is depressing.
Things will get easier when this ends :( Please replace this with the original
Not enjoyable to listen to her...her voice is shaky and scratchy. I realize there's a lot of Beth Orton fans...I guess I'm not one of them <-o<

This version strips all of the joy and ebullience present in the original. It certainly doesn't make one believe that things will actually be getting better.
I got to go with Leslie on this one. Her vocals don't do much for this cover. Just don't work for the_Jake on this one
Would love to hear the original version...
This is painful. Beth Orton is frequently offkey, not only in this song but in every song I've heard. ugh.
I agree with gypsy. Great cover! She made it her own, didn't she?
I think this is a fantastic cover of a wonderful song originally done by the Five Stairsteps. Thanks for playing this, Bill!
I like Beth Orton, but this song is about as ho-hum as they come.
