From reading "Winner Take All Politics", I learned that it actually started even earlier. In the mid-70's, after that crazy liberal, Nixon, created Medicare and the EPA, corporations got very unhappy and really started organizing. They created trade organizations that began pumping large amounts of money into politics at all levels, and buying up media so that they could pour poison into the ears of the masses (gods, guns, gays, muslims, etc.) and prevent any news about what was really happening to the government from reaching people. Media are now owned 90% or more by 6 large corporations. At the same time, the traditional sources of progressive organizing and power — small churches and unions — began to decline, the latter because of specific policies from the right. Throw into the mix the decline of funding for public schools ("why would I give my money to educate THOSE people?"), and you have a perfect atmosphere for demagoguery.
Hence the rise in the 80's of Reagan, and of blue-dog democrats, who were chasing corporate money and ignoring their constituents.
But what about Vienna Teng?

Broadway?!? You can't be serious. She is one of the most thoughtful songwriters around. Her voice can lack depth but doesn't detract from the depth of her music.

I don't like Tori Amos, nor Kate Bush much, and yet I like Vienna Teng a lot. Go figure. She's got a beautiful voice, and I find her music to be melodic and rewarding. Many say the same about the others, but I don't hear it there . . . though I do here. It's a mystery.

She seems to be very heavily influenced by Tori Amos but I think there is some skill and craftsmanship to the music and her voice is wonderful. A lot of people don't have hard lives filled with constant strife...hardly a valid reason to hate someone and their music.
I first heard VT on RP and bought both her CDs. I've also seen her perform live twice. She's so talented, such a wonderful songwriter and musician. Thanks for introducing us!

Vienna Teng is one of my favorite discoveries here at RP.
Vienna Teng is the only thing that makes me turn off RP. She is a competent musician,but too maudlin for me.
Pretty decent this. Obviously influenced by Sarah McLachlan(of which I used to be a huge fan). This is much better than Sarah's recent output, though. A seven it is then.

From her first album. She keeps getting better.
My wife and I just saw Vienna play at Club Passim in Cambridge last night. Phenomenal show, with Vienna/piano + cello player + violin player. Gorgeous, intimate setting, and rich arrangements with the strings. Vienna's stage manner is personable and direct, and she told the story of the creation of every song. Couldn't ask for a better evening.
I'm just getting into Vienna over here, and it's all the fault of RP!
