I've been looking for a woman to save my life
Not to beg or to borrow
A woman with the feeling of losing once or twice
Who knows how could it be, be tomorrow?

I've been waiting for you
And you've been coming to me
For such a long time now
Such a long time now

I've been waiting for you
And you've been coming to me
For such a long time now
Such a long time now

Thank you for those deep insights, Mr. McGoo.  Too bad you forgot to think before typing. I guess there's no point in mentioning that Bowie played guitar, saxophone and keyboards, and probably several other instruments. Oh, and wrote and sang some of the greatest popular music of the last six decades. Keep trying, you may get the hang of this whole song comment thing eventually.

In addition to the guitar, Bowie also played a variety of keyboards, including piano, Mellotron, Chamberlin, and synthesisers; harmonica; alto and baritone saxophones; stylophone; viola; cello; koto (in the "Heroes" track "Moss Garden"); thumb piano; drums (on the Heathen track "Cactus"), and various percussion instruments.

Also voice is an instrument.

Why even reply to such a stupid comment from mcgoo!
Kinda plump playing this after Dark Star. Great song though!

A great Bowie album!!! Thanks BillG. Go deeper
I see I'm not the only one who thought "Jamie's Crying" was coming on.  It doesn't even sound like it all that much, it must be the chord.

So, in their world, Ziggy didn't play guitar?

I've noticed in myself, the older I get and the more really good music I come across, I like more and more of Bowie's less popular works. I guess I get them now.
The bass lines are worth a separate listen........

My son wants a shirt that says “I liked David Bowie before he died”. Bowie was so great. An inspiration to so many.

Back to Neil Young, I stubled across an old quote from George Harrison recently that I never heard before,
"Neil Young has a worse voice than me"

Well now. THAT was horrid.
Sorry it's Bowie.

Fun story - I was a young teen on vacation in this city by the bay when I stumbled upon a CD stand in the market. I saw that cover and had no idea who that guy was - It looked like some goth-industrial album, and it was like 3 bucks so I picked it up.

Imagine my surprise when I realized it's actually that Ziggy Stardust dude.

Love this album, a 10.
Tin Machine performed this as well. The live version of this is incandescent.
Nice transition from Like A Hurricane
Just watched '"Rocketman". The critics loved it. I didn't.  It's not about John's music it's just about his gayness. The songs are lame imitations.  Not sure specifically what it was the critics liked about this flic. I guess it was the gay male subject matter that they thought "important". Or "enlightened", or politically correct.   Or something.

I find it remarkable that David Bowie, who is IMHO a far better singer than Neil Young, doesn't even come close to the original. It shows not only what a genius Neil Young is as a composer but also as a performer.

Being a better singer than Neil Young is not much to strive for...  Neil's right down there with Willy Nelson and Bob Dylan.  In my opinion, my dog could sing better than any of the three.

Maybe covers don't need to be compared to the originals.  Maybe, just maybe, they're supposed to go other places with the song.  Maybe covers that hue close to the original are a waste of time.

The great Gail Anne Dorsey.
Such a great song by Neil Young, and sung by Bowie. Best played VERY LOUD.

and a YEP!  Great cover.
This forum seems to be active on both TH - Crosseyed and Painless, but also Bowie-I've been waiting for you. Some bug somewhere. Maybe I should tell BG. Might be more to it than just this.

Like this, but I've loved the original since the early 70s. I only wish it had a second verse. Add Neil's version, maybe?

I can't believe I've never heard this before.

Interesting cover of Neil Young.
Jeez, how'd I miss this?  Must have been living under a rock.  This is really edgy for relatively late stage Bowie.  I like it.

Yes, and the followup "Reality" was equally good, if not better.
Incredible that he was still producing such strong material so late in his career.
Alas, there'll never be another Bowie.
A solid 3.  I like Bowie, but this version shows that great music can survive a tortured cover.  Neil's original is far superior.

And a consummate cover, for once. He rarely does them full justice.

David has a long history of really cool covers from artists he has a lot of respect for.

The song that drew me into RP, almost 12 years ago.
Just grabs me at the first chords - really dig it.

wicked cool version, imo  -  also great photo of young Martin Landau (from Planet 9) on his album

Kinda bland for David Bowie...me thinks.
I agree - this tune rocks.

I like it!
The entire album seems to be a heavy / soft rock exploration by bowie. Quite nice. And it ROCKS!
Excellent

So instantly likeable - haven't heard the original, but it's quality songwriting and it's Bowie, so you can't go wrong!

I didn't know that either, though I can hear his style in it now, especially in the guitar solo.  I think this is a great version, in any case.

So Neil's been doing a great cover of A Day in the Life on Tour.

Would love to here that to follow Bowie's Neil cover next time.

Follwed by the Beatle's covering say Buddy Holly.

And then Buddy covering.... don't know if he ever covered say —- Hank Williams
David Bowie has a truly impressive repertoire of music!

I don't like David Bowie.  As MBE says:  "Me and God hate this song".  {#Yes}  Only he says it much more artistically.

On this album, Bowie does cover the Pixies though—"Cactus".  This ended up being my favorite Bowie album.  Not the hippest or the most adventurous or most ambitious — but just very good to listen to.

For those of you who didn't think David could rock after the 70's were over, here's your proof.

Great great cover.

well David is as good as a singer as ol' Neil is, eh, shakey. Goes to show that technique is not really important in popular music - which makes it the most important present day art form, not spoiled by academics and theories. Which is exactly what I am borderlining right  now. BAd. But remarkably fresh sounding cover, though.

Album Cover looks like Bowie just found out that Mick Jagger has AIDS.
