There's a light overhead, overhead
In the sky overhead, overhead
And I'm with you now
In body in music and mind
And we're silent and still
Everything's so out of control tonight

In a plane that's flying fast
At a speed that makes me cry
If you left me now
To trouble that won't let me lie
I'm awake all the time
You know where I stand
Holding my plastic gun
Turn and run

You cold killers of innocence
Against us there's no defence
Your flash and your wickedness
You can't break out of

Tie my hands behind my back
Put a gag on top of my mouth
But I won't give you up
Til silverware's covered in dust
And my shoes fall apart
The tumbleweed runs over my desert heart
So turn and run

You cold killers of innocense
Against us there's no defense
Your flash and your wickedness

Will surely bring you down again
Somehow we stay afloat
We won't give in to the undertow
Somethings you will never know
But you can't break out of
Coming down
But you can't break out of
Slowing down
But you can't break out of

Imagine how miserable you have to be to hold the option Finn is whiney or lame.

Neil Finn has written so many great songs....even though he's a Kiwi, we claim him as our own in Oz!
According to the books, that's the way Nelson wore his, you know. And Aubrey has a bit of crush on Nelson.

Oh this is so nice! Had to look up from my keyboard to see what it was.{#Good-vibes}
Neil Finn has such a mellow voice - and his melodies are always classy
Neil played this in Seattle on his "Dizzy Heights" tour back on March 30.   A magical night with his good friend Eddie Vedder joining him for a number of songs.

This version is slightly different in cadence and mix from the UK release entitled "One Nil". I think I like this version slightly better.

I'd forgotten how wonderful this man is and what an excellent album this is...buying it again, because it's so good!
What a talented fellow!
Love Neil.....and this song too. Check out the live recording of it...even better and more emotional in my opinion
Love this kind of surprises. Never heard it before (guess i didn't come around much), but find it instantly brilliant.

BTW (in regard to the lower remarks about a spark of Beatles/George Harrison): today this song was followed by George Harrison - I'd Have You Anytime. Bill 's on a role! (or rather Rebecca?)
I hear a little Beatles riff...maybe a little George as well!
Really like the sincerity of this tune. Neil Finn...I salute you.
GENIUS FROM NEW ZEALAND!

HAven't really loved what I've heard of the new Crowded House, and I cringed at two songs that Neil's done with his wife (as the Pajama Club). Wouldn't call his new work boring and predictable...it's just jarring, like some evil witch had stolen his mojo.

Overall, though, I Iove almost everything that the Finn brothers have done. They've been great for decades.

Cynaera, that's a great story about Neil. He sounds like a great guy...
I remember when I lived in Salem, Neil Finn stopped at a Portland radio station to do an interview to promote a series of performances he was doing in the area. He was jet-lagged to the eyeballs and had had less than four hours of sleep in the last couple of days or so, but his interview was one of the funniest, wittiest, most thought-provoking things I'd ever heard. He apologized in advance for anything he might say that would have to get censored, and then took Les Sarnoff (I think that's who conducted the interview - I could be wrong) on a wild ride through the land of the deranged and genius.  And then he performed a couple of songs. Even with his hoarse morning voice and a guitar, he sounded amazing.

It was about the best thing I could ever have hoped for.  I love Neil Finn - the man and the music. {#Cheers}

Dittto those yawns...  nothing special about this in my opinion.

From the comments, I can't help thinking of Paul McCartney... you either love him or think he's boring...

(personally I love both...)

I love his sound and would love to hear more...can't play to much of him for me :)

It must be harmony night on R. P. I'm loving it. 4 negative reviews? Metalheads maybe?

Nope, sorry, can't get past the jingle stick - that should be strictly for jesters only and is no more a musical instrument than a twanging ruler. 3 from the Nottingham jury.
I prefer the One Nil version. This one is slowed down and re-mixed too brightly.

Whenever I hear this song I think of 9/11. Maybe it's the line about the planes and being out of control, but it's also a song about death.

Beautiful melody.

I really like all the nice comments about Glenn Tilbrook associated with Neil Finn. Dead-on; they're among the VERY BEST songwriters ever. Saw Crowded House at Mackey Auditorium (at CU in Boulder; fabulous sound!) way back, on the Woodface tour, and, having always appreciated the tight little pop-novels of Squeeze, luckily caught Glenn T at The Soiled Dove in Denver in fall of '01, and almost unbelievably, AGAIN, just last August ('05) at Star Pine Cafe in Kichijoji. He remembered me because I again requested Up The Junction, which he pretends to be reluctant to play but everyone knows it is the best little book-in-a-song ever created. He glows when he sings it. He's a god, is he not?! Any event with those guys shining is one of life's best memories! Would love to see Neil on his own, or with his bro again, too! So nice to see folks grooving on the good stuff...
I just have to say this is one of the best songs I have heard in days, if not weeks, here on RP. And that's saying something! This is mature songwriting in the vein of Michael Penn, Squeeze, or even the Beatles. I have to get me some more of this Finn stuff.
This man's music just grabs me and won't let go.

A lot of people (here in America) would read what you wrote about GT et al. and say "who?", so it's nice to see you really appreciate all things Finn and Squeeze.
Love Niel Finn's music!!

I've been working on a compilation of what I consider "the best of the Finns." Quite a few of my picks are from Neil's solo work, which is just amazing: well-crafted songs that go straight to the heart, some remarkably Beatle-esque and IMO considerably more mature than Split Enz or Crowded House. I was lucky enough to catch the Finn Bros. on their recent concert tour. Wow. Wow. Wow. They are practically a well-kept secret in the U.S. I'm glad RP is giving them their due airtime, in all of Tim & Neil's incarnations.

Sorry, can't let that one go by unanswered. It's definitely true that CH is more accessible than SE, the record sales alone prove that, but SE certainly were never esoteric or anything close to it. Zany, wierd, off the planet perhaps, but definitely not esoteric. They were the first to stage real looniness and get away with it, they wore bizarre clothes and had radical haircuts well before punk or new wave made all of that de riguer. (I mean we're talking mid-seventies). The closest artists to compare them with are perhaps Eno and Manzanera. The way I see it, SE (I mean Tim) were always caught between their innate drive for artistic invention on the one hand and a hankering to make it big time on the other which probably made them weaker. That is where Neil is so much more successful than Tim. But it was Tim who was the driving force behind SE and gave Neil the environment in which to develop. Check out 'Say it is so' from Tim and the early Split Enz albums.

Neil and his older brother Tim were both in Split Enz. Tim was the founder and Neil joined later. Neil was in CH for the duration, Tim only joined for the last studio offering.
Actually, Tim joined CH as a full member for their third album (WOODFACE) - which started life as a Finn Brothers album. TOGETHER ALONE was their 4th and final album (not including the subsequent compilations AFTERGLOW and RECURRING DREAM). Tim also contributes backing vocals to CH's TEMPLE OF LOW MEN. Neil, in turn, turns up on a Tim Finn record or two as well. As far as checking out Split Enz, go for it, but asside from a few songs I find them to be more... esoteric. It's kind of like comparing early Genesis to Peter Gabriel. The later is more immediately accessible than the former.

There was at least one tune if not more recorded by both groups. Check out the www.allmusic.com site that Bill links for every band. Extremely informative site.

I like the One All version *much* better. There is much less subtlety in this version, for instance the drums are to heavy and lifeless

I believe that the main difference between the One Nil and One All versions is that Sheryl Crow provides the backing vocals for the former and Lisa Germano does so for the latter. not being at all a fan of Sheryl Crow, I prefer the One All version, myself. regarding the albums in their entireties, I do prefer One Nil to One All...but let's face it, they're both pretty damn good.

Wow, this is one boring song. I mean, it works well on the album, but if you had to take one cut and play it independently, why this one? Where is "Driving Me Mad?" Or "Addicted" or "Sinner," for that matter? I mean, really, come on, THIS?
