Drivin' on 9
You could be a shadow
Beneath the streetlight
Behind my home

Drivin' on 9
I sure miss you
Pass a motel
Looking in the blinds

Drivin' on 9
Looking for the 30
Maybe I passed it
I'll Go another mile

Drivin' on 9

I sure look pretty
Carson city
Walking down the aisle
Drivin' on 9
Does daddy have a shotgun?
He said he'd never need one
Go another mile

Drivin' on 9

Drivin' on 9
Looking out my window sill
Wondering if I want you still
Wondering what's mine
Drivin' on 9

I grew up off hwy 9 in Felton.  Now I live in western NC and live off another hwy 9.  They're all the same.  All the daddy's have shotguns.

Drove up in our RV  to Alaska  in 2012.  Seward was one one of our first stops.   Parked in a city dry camp site on the south end of the town, on the Bay of Alaska as i recall, next to the aquarium   We liked  it so much that we stopped there on the way back.
Perfect sweet song with the candy voice of Kim... Have a beautiful 31th december RP
much better songs on 'pod' and 'last splash' than this one
This thing is really in heavy rotation here on RP. It says the song has been played twice in the past 30 days. I've heard it twice just this week.

Thirded. They just sound like another Frank Black project to me without her.

The new album is pretty good...
I saw them live a couple months back... The whole Last Splash gang back together. The Deal sisters look great and happy and full of life, considering it wasn't a sure thing that they'd make it this long, I'd count that as a great win...
Oh, and they even played this, much to my delight.

I don't care whatcha' say, this little song swings. :-)
This reminds me of Olive Oyl's solo in Popeye.

I always thought she was singing "Driving All Night", and I had the CD but never bothered to look at the title. Good to hear this again.
What other radio plays The Breeders? Thank you RP!!

This Alaskan loves California Hwy 9.
Oh, man, her voice on this one...wow...makes me think of Hwy 9, up off of I-70 near Dillon/Silverthorne; goes up to Kremmling, on the way to Steamboat Springs...and that always means the best of the best fishing and camping in Summer and killer skiing in Winter; Good Times!

Bump
This is a great album.

This song is totally different than the rest of the album, but still a great tune to sing along to.
I always remember my brother, at a Breeders show, happily jumping up and down shouting "There's two of 'em!" re: Kim and Kelly. He was in love...

And our friend Jesse smoked pot with them on their bus.
 Jelani wrote:

On 9? must be to Poughkeepsie...or away from it ( would be better). :-)

{#Lol}  In my experience, Poughkeepsie does look much better in the rear view mirror.  US Route 9 in NYS does go through NYC and NJ - I think as far as Delaware - but I think she may be talking about Massachusetts Route 9 in in this tune, since that does intersect Route 30 (which is also mentioned in the lyrics) in a few places and she lived in Boston.  Good tune.

Me, too - sorta makes me slow down and breathe, and smile. And then breathe again and actually notice things like flowers, dragonflies, and cool breezes...  Reminds me of a simpler time when my brother and I were rattling down a country road in his ancient truck with the a.m. radio. We never knew what it would play, so we didn't bother to set the station. One day, we'd get something by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and another day, we'd get a radio talk show.  It was a Russian-Roulette radio.  If people wanted to get around us, my brother would just pull to the side and let them pass, and then he'd get back onto to road and we'd yup-yup along.  Good times...{#Sunny}

For me, Drivin' On 9 was for Last Splash what Here Comes Your Man was for Doolittle.

Always was a fun little ditty but not very representative of what the band was about.  I think I like almost every other song on the album more.

I wouldn't have if you hadn't mentioned it. But you're right. There it is. Thanks for the flash back!
Likely the best spin-off out of The Pixies. Kim Deal in her best performance. The album is a fast listen but no doubt leaves behind indelible moments. Good to start the afternoon!
Kelly's the Real Deal. Too bad she takes 5 years to do a new record.
very funny.. 7 ! for start :)

I agree, I think she means Rt 9 outside of Boston..it actually runs all the way across MA & ends near the NY border.

This Highway 9 (not the song's) runs from Los Gatos through Saratoga, up into the Santa Cruz Mountains, down again into Boulder Creek, through Felton and finally ends at Highway 1 in Santa Cruz. In the mountains, it's a vomit comet if you're a pregnant passenger.

's what I've always wondered, too. Seems like the band members hale from parts more Eastward, but that doesn't mean they didn't play gigs at the Catalyst when touring the greater Bay Area, or something. JonnyNismo wrote:

Would love to hear RP play something by the Amps as well (Pacer album).
Riding on the hype of the Pixies all the way. I thought the songwriting was weak on this album.

Thanks. As a Brit I'm a bit slow on this kind of US common knowledge. BTW Bill. I was just thinking how long it's been since I last heard this song, and 'Presto!' Bill pulls it out of the hat !! Later edit: I should have known. Route 66; Highway 61; Highway 59 (lesser known than the other 2); so 9 is a highway also.
Route 66 is also known as National Trails Highway. Hwy 1 follows the California coastline and is one of the most excellent roads EVER! 395 takes the north/ south route along the eastern slope of California's Sierra Neveda mountians... another beautiful road trip. Or if desolation is your road... Take Hwy. 62 north out of Palm Springs thru 29 Palms, pick up Amboy Road north, take Route 66 east a few miles, turn north on Kelbaker Road to the center of the Mojave Scenic Preserve and the old train station at Kelso. You are now out in the middle of nowhere.

I've been troubled by the lyrics to this one. Is the singer expressing her delight? her pride? her surprise? that a father needn't any weaponry to "persuade" a beau to legally and formally couple with his daughter?
