Please beware of them that stare
They'll only smile to see you while your time away
And once you've seen what they have been
To win the earth just won't seem worth your night or your day
Who'll hear what I say?

Look around you find the ground
Is not so far from where you are, but not too wise
For down below they never grow
They're always tired and charms are hired from out of their eyes
Never a surprise

Take your time and you'll be fine
And say a prayer for people there who live on the floor
And if you see what's meant to be, don't name the day or try to say
It happened before

Don't be shy, you learn to fly
And see the sun when day is done, if only you see
Just what you are, beneath a star
That came to stay one rainy day in Autumn for free
Yes, be what you'll be

Please beware of them that stare
They'll only smile to see you while your time away
And once you've seen what they have been
To win the earth just won't seem worth your night or your day
Who'll hear what I say?

Open up the broken cup
Let the goodly sin and sunshine in, yes, that's today
And open wide the hymns you hide
You find renown while people frown at things that you say
But say what you'll say

About the farmers and the fun
And the things behind the sun
And the people 'round your head
Who say everything's been said

And the movement in your brain
Sends you out into the rain

He was 26 when he died. Such beautiful music from a fragile soul who was too short lived. You can't call such creativity a waste when, like me, you have never produced anything near perfection.

I heard this song today, and was moved again. I just love the fascinating chords, and his understated delivery. Gone at 26? Far too young.

Now, one of my superpowers is that I can hear the shape of guitar chords, so I knew that the verse was something like Am / E7 / Fsomething / E7, with the chorus going to an A / D/A / C/G / D/F# pattern .. and tonight I got a chance to try that out. I was also able to confirm that Nick recorded this song with the capo on the fourth fret.

So eventually (so many gorgeous chords!) I had to sidle over to Amazon and order three of his CDs. The best part is that a gift card I received for my birthday from my employer (back in April) covered the whole expense. Wow.

Thanks, Bill & Rebecca, for expanding my musical universe. I am richer for joining this community. Peace and Love.

Nice.  He seldom used "standard" tuning on his guitar, so figuring out a lot of his other tunes may be a little challenging.

Really like this guitar. It’s rather stunning when you consider that’s all that’s being played here.

Check that your "playlist" is synched with the audio.  Sometimes they get un-linked.

It's melancholic for sure. He does offer a brief flash of optimism, which makes it all the more melancholic.
+1 to 9.

So sad and beautiful. What a voice. He found it incredibly difficult to be under-appreciated back in the days when he wrote it.
So beautiful, so simple, so missed.

When I think of Nick Drake, I think of the lyric from the song Vincent:
This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you

Yes, that is where I first heard him.  It was shocking to me that I had not been exposed to him in the 70's.  Apparently, that was the case in general because I believe he died and then achieved a posthumous success.

Um, isn't that the definition of "timeless"?
There are few people so adept at playing the guitar so percussively, so in tune with its ability to set up complex waveforms, so able to keep them humming and thrumming in their quantum-boosted state, so able to lay down new layers of vibration on top of them; all the while, so able to paint heartbreakingly human portraits of the joys and sufferings of Love and the ongoing enigma of this life... Divine...

In a way, but his music was also rooted in the old, British folk music traditions.  Time can be kind of circular.

Sitting in a coffee shop in a hutong -one of these typical streets of the old city, close to the Lama Temple in Beijing- opposite side of the world, and yet, this in my ears suddenly sends me back to an afternoon, in a small village of France somewhere end of the 70s, during summertime, the first time I heard it. When "free radio" meant good music, zero advertisement, and excellent journalism.

Another new fan. Thanks for expanding my horizon, again.
I discovered Nick Drake on Radio Paradise and he has become one of my favorite artists.  Ended up acquiring the massive box set of his recordings and play the hell out of it.

This is so good.
I've just recently heard the story of Nick Drake - he's kind of like the Ian Curtis of his time. I found a documentary on YouTube - pretty interesting.
Just lovely music. He sure had something to say. Thanks, RP.

Ah...c'mon. It's Friday afternoon...Spring time.

We need rock n roll.

This Nike Drake stuff is for falling asleep in a field of grass. Zzzzz

Nothing like a little Nick Drake on this cloudy, melancholy afternoon.
I love Radio Paradise.   Where else can I hear a set like this?
Thank you.
Pretty amazing that this production and song along with the vocals...sounds very relevant today. I could see this covered by Ray LaMontagne or any artist like this.
A wonderful connection of songs tonight... Incense, piano, madness, and behind.. all my favorites
Genius at work.
I love Nick Drake. Not because he is dead... a very sad story.
His music is special and so beautiful! It is sad he became
more famous after his dead. But he will live on through his music.
One of my favorite artists. And RP is the only station where we can hear him.
I love RP too!
Shiny!
Longer I listen to Nick Drake the more I'm entranced, mesmerized, impressed. Often imitated, never equalled. 9 -> 10
Nice flow this afternoon... even if just a tad dark... if it was 12 hours hence, I might open a vein...
We just got that book at the library I work at, and it looked good.

I was very pleasantly surprised to wake up this morning to this song. Absolutely beautiful, I was stunned to hear it as normally I awaken to static on KZFR after having recorded Barbara Manning's "Radio Detour" the previous night. Is this a new thing? And is this station 24/7? Either way, wow, wow, wow.
Every Nick Drake song is excellent. All songs on Pink Moon are 10's. The only problem with the album is its length.

This artist made a profound impact on me when I first heard him. Rarely does one so captivating come along; and all too often they get snatched away before their time.

Stunning.

I watched all the youtube videos of his unmade documentary.Very interesting interviews with friends and family.Apparently,he wasn't famous during his time because his music was "not of that era",and his live performances were not as good as his recordings. It depressed him quite a bit. What a talent!

Some debate as to whether it was accidental or not. I believe it was accidental, but there is no denying his troubled spirit.
A beautiful song.

I said it about another Nick Drake track on RP. He captures a very English melancholy. It's the angst of a repressed 1950s Middle-England upbringing, lost in literature and reverie, gazing out onto the damp English countryside on a typically grey day.
It's stunning how fresh this sounds 37 years later.
