When I was young, younger than before
I never saw the truth hanging from the door
And now I'm older, see it face to face
And now I'm older, gotta get up, clean the place

And I was green, greener than the hill
Where flowers grew and the sun shone still
Now I'm darker than the deepest sea
Just hand me down, give me a place to be

And I was strong, strong in the sun
I thought I'd see when day was done
Now I'm weaker than the palest blue
Oh, so weak in this need for you

What do you think of the track “Know”?
So calming
Smeared with John Martyn’s vocal tones and wonderful guitar syncopation. All Hail !!!

What?  Van Gogh is a household name, with libraries of books written about him and museums named after him.  He is a national hero in Holland.  Where is Nick Drake heralded?  I know you know about him, you know a lot about music.  The average person has never heard of him.  I would say there are at least a few thousand performers with more recognition than him.

With the greatest respect I’m not sure that I agree. I was lucky enough to pick up a double vinyl sampler for 99p in 1980. There were various artists on this sampler but the stand out track was ‘Northern Sky’. At this stage Nick was very obscure and it took real efforts to locate more of his music. I couldn't believe it when, a decade later, his greatest hits CD ‘Way to Blue’ was being promoted at the door of my local record store/supermarket. Today most genuine music lovers have heard of Nick and and his music is now commercial enough to be in most shops and websites.  I feel that year on year he is getting wider recognition.

Few music can give you joy and sadness the same time, as this one
Takes me somewhere
Will listen to it forever
My first 9

Sorry No I don’t understand you or the cover. I have a full size LP version of the cover and have looked closely at it on numerous occasions and I still haven’t got a clue what its about. I’m sure it something very clever but I’m afraid its just to subtle for me.

lovely song...

I wrote that Van Gogh was among "artists unheralded during their lifetimes", not subsequent to their deaths.  True, though, to the average person, there are thousands of music performers more heralded than Nick Drake, but among musicians and those who follow music, he is pretty widely "heralded" - at least since the Volkswagen TV commercial.

Nick really must be the greatest unheralded artist there is, in any medium.  He is the gift that keeps on giving.  I think it is to RP's credit that they play him so much.  I don't hear him anywhere else on the radio, ever.  It's so ironic that the only place I ever do hear him besides here is in rom-com films and TV commercials.   I was introduced to him because about 10 years ago Moby put out a list of his most influencial CDs and this was one.  How lucky I was to read that.

Stange. Obviously Moby didn't pay attention to what he was listening to cause he didn't learn anything! i.e. Moby sux, Drake is great and they have musically absolutely nothing in common just in case there was any misunderstanding of what I was trying to say.

He said "Personally, of artists unheralded during their lifetimes, I consider Van Gogh the greatest." (Emphasis mine.)
Just beautiful!

Not to be nit-picky, but that's not really logical.  For one thing - he is now heralded - though he was not as much during his lifetime.  Also, if there are greater unherald artists out there, there would be little way of finding out about them.  Personally, of artists unheralded during their lifetimes, I consider Van Gogh the greatest.

Not a bad choice, but I have to go with Obadiah Bind-your-kings-in chains-and your-nobles-in-fetters-of-iron Barebones.

That's what breaks my heart, cc_rider. Beside the voice, of course.

Wow...Elbow to Nick Drake.  Nice transition, Bill.  BTW, really liking Elbow's Seldom Seen Kid thanks to you and & RP. :)
I was lucking to be working in radio in the early 70s so I got a chance to hear Nick Drake from the freebie the record company mailed us. Somehow that album found its way into my bookbag and went home with me when it became apparent that no one liked it but me.

I lost it at some point and it was long out of print. Imagine my pleasant surprise when he popped up suddenly! Yay, he finally gets his due!

I find that Nick Drake also has that effect on me, what an awesome bunch of songs he leaves behind, although it's a shame he never lived long enough to enjoy the fame and fortune he deserved.

I put this album on three or four times, while my wife was giving birth to my son... it did a great work!

I can never get enough of Nick Drake. Beautiful.
A very nice song, not my favorite of his. Hey, if you want to talk politics, go get a forum.
love this album

Hey genius... We in Texas? These were the polls leading up to the election there: (click here) What happened on election day? (click here) Red state neanderthals...
Side 1 of this album (which includes this song) is quite possibly the finest side of late-night singer-songwriter material ever produced. I don't say that lightly, because this is an amazing tradition of music--but this is just fabulous.
Politics... who gives a FUCK. Nick Drake is gorgeous. Effortless, compared to DMB -- they try so very hard and still can't pull off something this elegant. (BTW, I'm a big DMB fan, just love Drake more than living.)

Nice. As opposed to that other clown who is sure to Kerry us into the lap of the NWO.
Someone recently compared his music to that of Donovan, now I can see it. Growing on me. A 7.
Nick Drake is amazing.
The 5th snoozer in a row, must be going for a record

how could this music be muted until the 00's?. What were we thinking back in the 70's? It kicks ass over John Mayer, Cat Stevens, and especially the Carpenters
Drake got started in the '60s when the competition was much more keen. Even so, it's a shame he never surfaced above the miasma. His music is spellbinding. Of a comparison with Cat Stevens, all one can say is ''tis better to have lived and died than never to have lived at all.'
drake = happiness

Come now... Drake's mumblings are much more melodic and less grating...

It is a shame that you have to be afraid to voice your opinion, even if I think you are WAY off. Nick Drake, cut short before his time, brilliant writer with a voice unique to this world. Please play more ...

When I first heard Nick Drake (or at least \'noticed\' his music, which was probably Pink Moon in that commercial), I thought he was Hawaiian - like Iz (Israel Kakahoweveryouspellhisname), or somebody like that. :D
Pink Moon, his last album, is still my favorite. Way to Blue, Time of No Reply, and Fruit Tree were all released after his death as compilations and are excellent. But if you still want more, try Tanworth in Arden 67/68. This includes obscure stuff, covers, blues, and overall not the best quality but if you a true fan, you will want this one as well.
Ouch ! If you're feeling down, don't listen to this song ! In fact... You know, it's spring, and all this stuff 'bout love, etc... ok, let's try to forget this sadness.
I much prefer Dylon\'s incomprehensible mumblings to Drakes.
What took poor nick from us? All the good ones are taken.

My favorite song by one of my favorite artists. Every year or so I find an album that I just listen to over and over for months. This was the one from 3 years ago.
Every time I hear another new song of Nick\'s here ... I like it ... I\'m still suprized that I never heard his music back in the late 60\'s and early 70\'s when it originally came out.
