Stayed true to the things I knew when I was younger
And food and love was all but left to hunger
'Cause when I stray from my truth as I grow older
Too much leaves an empty hollow hunger

I think about you on a moonlit night
And the stars all seem to weep
When there's so much to lose
There's never any time for sleep

Look at me doing all these things without you
We always laughed, and you were untrue
Where was it we tried hard not to go to?
I think that's how I finally came through

All the things we took for granted
The words still live on in my head
All the times I took for granted
All the words I never said

I think about you in the moonlit night
And the stars all seem to weep
When there's so much love to give
There's never any time for sleep, yeah.

So I stayed true to the things I knew when I was younger
And human life was all but left to hunger
'Cause when I stray from the truth as I grow older
Too much leaves an empty hollow hunger
Too much leaves an empty hollow hunger

With or without you
With or without you
With or without you.

Thanks for the review - she's playing in my city soon and I'm thinking about going
This might be my favorite Beth Orton song. It sounds perfectly like the title: dark and sad, with a plaintive beauty. I love the tones of electronica in it.

On a more ridiculous note, I always thought "We always left a new world untrue" was "We always laughed when you were untrue," or, alternatively, "We always laughed at you were untrue" - where the you separates the line into two interconnected sentences: "we always laughed at you/you were untrue." I think mine makes more sense....
Her songs, kind of remind me of things that you listen to or melancholy day just because.
I didn't really know her when this came out, but listening to it now it really sounds like that time and makes me nostalgic. I would've loved this.
Love her voice. Love the warbling and the thinness — great imperfections.

The more I hear Beth the more I love her! Just an incredible artist, and yet another artist I doubt I would have ever heard without Radio Paradise. Thanks Bill and Rebecca!
The playlist this morning, December 31, 2021: has me glued to the Radio Paradise website. Just outstanding this morning! Thank you!
Beautiful lyrics.
always a pleasure to hear Beth's voice in my car while driving.
It's no wonder Ryan Adams wrote a song  for her.
...speaking  of Ryan Adams  Bill?  haha!
More, and more, Beth, please.
This song continues to 'get' me   A gem

Because women have had to put up with that kind of sexist bullshit for far too long. It's not good enough for a woman to have talent in any given field, she also has to look flawless while doing so, or her efforts are given no merit. It's bullshit and it's time for it to end. Bravo to bruzote for calling it out.
I typically like the Beth Orton songs I've heard on RP (I've never heard her anywhere else, and don't have enough interest to purchase a CD of her music, but I like the songs nonetheless), but this one just sounds like many others by many other musicians. All it needs is that little high-pitched doggie bark (or whatever that is) and it'd be Dido's "Thank You" which is actually a rather good tune. But this one's a bit of a bore, musically speaking.
I've loved this song since I heard it.  Lyrics to kill.

I wanted to see her in Christchurch last year, but sadly the show was canceled. I am suspecting not enough ticket sales in NZ. The punters only want to see BeeGees tribute show.
Love this tune. Trip-pop. Heh

I feel that she comes to doing an impression of Sade on this song! I dig how she plays with the ebb and flow of words and rhythm here.

It's Ben Watt playing the keyboards on this track, so there is definitely a electronica/"house" sound there.

OK. I saw her, probably in 2008 or 9, playing a decent sized venue of at least 2,000 in Brighton. She was late, very late. When she eventually appeared she apologised, but she had been in London at an 'award show' and 'traffic' was bad. I am sorry, but that was out of order. She should have been at the gig where people had paid good money to see her and not going off to something else making her late.

The gig itself was so bad we walked out half way (a VERY rare event for me).

So that is two strikes for Beth Live then. . .

Having said that, Beth is still on high rotation at Poacher mansions and I still love listening to her.

She gets a lot of play at the oldsaxon hall, too, but I remember seeing her once in Canada. At that gig she had a small band with her in a nice intimate venue. I could not hear her singing, I could not hear her guitar, I could only hear the massive bass booming over everything, and I mean everything. That bass could have drowned out a jet engine in the same room! At the time I blamed the sound guy, but maybe it's just that Beth sucks at live performance. I believe I left early.

And carrying on. I watched her live performance on the recent live iTunes gigs at the Roundhouse. Got through the first three or four tracks and gave up again.

Such a shame, I really, really want to enjoy her playing live.
Yawn, I go to sleep now > solid 3

A couple of months ago, I was very excited to see her perform a solo show in a venue of less than 500 people in San Francisco. Very quickly, it became apparent that we were in for a disappointment. There was no support band or other performers, just 100% Beth, so when she didn't take the stage for 30 -45 minutes, the audience just got to wait. Then she began the show. By the end of the 3rd song, she started screwing up — she could not remember how her music went! She fumbled and fumbled for minutes on end before figuring it out amidst profuse apologies. Then she made it through the next song, only to get hung up on the next 3 songs, fumbling and apologizing like before. After the show mercifully ended, the clock had elapsed 35 minutes; another 10 minutes of audience persuasion got her to come out for 1 more song that truly ended the show. Total time from Beth Orton's entrance to her final departure: 58 minutes! She appeared to suffer not from inebriation, but from stage fright or lack of preparation. I expected much more for my $45 ticket.

I think you've nailed it — I love Beth Orton, but this track is not doing it for me.  After reading your post I tried blocking out the music and focused on her voice, and there is potential for a great song, if the arrangement / music was different.

More Beth!  For some reason I have 2 Stolen Cars off this album, but not this tune.  Thanks for sharing!
One of her best tracks with nice sentiment.  I have seen her live some years ago, and it is not her natural place and she was clearly uncomfortable performing then,  giving a somewhat lacklustre and disappointingshow.  One of those artists who is better in the studio - but that's fine, cos I mainly listen at home.

I don't think that's a theremin. It's a synth of some type. A theremin produces a pretty pure sine wave, which that sliding tone is not.
