Thanks for the review - she's playing in my city soon and I'm thinking about going
This might be my favorite Beth Orton song. It sounds perfectly like the title: dark and sad, with a plaintive beauty. I love the tones of electronica in it.
On a more ridiculous note, I always thought "We always left a new world untrue" was "We always laughed when you were untrue," or, alternatively, "We always laughed at you were untrue" - where the you separates the line into two interconnected sentences: "we always laughed at you/you were untrue." I think mine makes more sense....

Her songs, kind of remind me of things that you listen to or melancholy day just because.
I didn't really know her when this came out, but listening to it now it really sounds like that time and makes me nostalgic. I would've loved this.
Love her voice. Love the warbling and the thinness — great imperfections.

I typically like the Beth Orton songs I've heard on RP (I've never heard her anywhere else, and don't have enough interest to purchase a CD of her music, but I like the songs nonetheless), but this one just sounds like many others by many other musicians. All it needs is that little high-pitched doggie bark (or whatever that is) and it'd be Dido's "Thank You" which is actually a rather good tune. But this one's a bit of a bore, musically speaking.
I've loved this song since I heard it. Lyrics to kill.

I wanted to see her in Christchurch last year, but sadly the show was canceled. I am suspecting not enough ticket sales in NZ. The punters only want to see BeeGees tribute show.

There was no support band or other performers, just 100% Beth, so when she didn't take the stage for 30 -45 minutes, the audience just got to wait. Then she began the show. By the end of the 3rd song, she started screwing up — she could not remember how her music went! She fumbled and fumbled for minutes on end before figuring it out amidst profuse apologies. Then she made it through the next song, only to get hung up on the next 3 songs, fumbling and apologizing like before. After the show mercifully ended, the clock had elapsed 35 minutes; another 10 minutes of audience persuasion got her to come out for 1 more song that truly ended the show. Total time from Beth Orton's entrance to her final departure: 58 minutes! She appeared to suffer not from inebriation, but from stage fright or lack of preparation. I expected much more for my $45 ticket.

One of her best tracks with nice sentiment. I have seen her live some years ago, and it is not her natural place and she was clearly uncomfortable performing then, giving a somewhat lacklustre and disappointingshow. One of those artists who is better in the studio - but that's fine, cos I mainly listen at home.

I sincerely doubt it was stage fright or lack of preparation. She's been in the biz much to long for such amateurism.

i was at that show. front row center. it was painful to be that close and seeing her so anxious. only when she sang 'spotlight' did she seem to connect to her inner rockstar talent.

This just so happens to be on Everything But the Girl - Back to Mine CD. This song is a favorite and an influence on the band for their music. So, very cool, not dull. This is relaxing and chill.

I don't think that's a theremin. It's a synth of some type. A theremin produces a pretty pure sine wave, which that sliding tone is not.
