Just looking for a friend
Who's gonna love my baby
When she's gone around the bend?

Egyptian bells are ringing
When it's her birthday
Sweet nothin', I'm talking about you
There's a hurricane blowing your way

Ooh, such a beautiful way to break your heart
Ooh, such a beautiful way to break my heart
There's someone calling your name
It's driving you insane

You were wearing that stained raincoat
And your umbrella was a tangled mess
You were washed up on the glittering shores
Looking for another crime to confess

You bribed yourself out of a place in the sun
But you had some change to spare
So you said you wanna spend it on me
And shook the blues out of your hair

Ooh, such a beautiful way to break your heart
Ooh, such a beautiful way to break my heart
There's someone calling your name
You're gonna miss that train

Ooh, such a beautiful way to break your heart
Ooh, such a beautiful way to break my heart
There's someone calling your name
It's driving you insane

What's up with Bill talking (after the song ends) about Bob Dylan taking white pills in the 60's and being inspired to write great songs?  I'm pretty sure this one was written by Beck, not Dylan, but maybe there's something in the lyrics that I'm missing?

Or is it that Bill's intro to the following song (Hey Now by London Grammar) followed a Dylan song at some other time and has now been orphaned from the original reference? I guess it's not possible but I thought all of Bill's banter was pretty unique, and not repeated (even if it's not live, which it obviously cannot be 24/7).

Either way, this is a great song, whoever wrote it and whatever it has or doesn't have to do with white pills that truck drivers took in the 60's!

2012. I was there with you thanks to Radio Paradise and I must agree. His rendition of Golden Age in particular was absolutely beautiful.
Saw him the next day down on Market St. with a posse of ladies and my friend just had to cross the street and fanboy, even though I begged him not to. He pointed at me and when Beck looked over I just waved uncomfortably. Then I shrugged...

Beck has left the Church of Scientology from what I understand. Without Scientology or with it, he's an important artist.

Religions in general are a pretty hellish beast...
Beck is such a tremendous songwriter.  It's kind of hilarious that most of what he's known for in the mainstream is "Loser".  The general public sure has strange taste...  I guess for the most part they just want a catchy hook and that's it.

agreed, but this album cover is comparable to Joe Henry's "Trampoline". Ugh.

Dude, haven't you heard? People get to pick their role models. Totally their choice. That's the way it's been since-- checks notes, looks up-- sez here, "Forever."
I just love how Beth Orton helps take this amazing song to the next level...and I dig the heck outta Beck, especially when well elevated!

He's a huge talent - all styles/genres of music. He's a bit brilliant

it's who you, are not what you are, that matters to me
This song is so .. languid. Even it's the winter solstice today, this feels like drinking cold beer on my deck on a sunny August afternoon. I love atmospheric music like this.

As someone (who is "Banned") said below, this song was included on certain Windows PCs, presumably back around 1999. I hope posting that isn't why he/she was banned ;-)

I bought one of those PCs! I liked the song!

That's high on my list.  Apparently, he had to be very careful about each and every word and I think he even met with the church before publishing it.  They'll sue you for anything.  I seriously worry about writing anything about them.  Fortunately, we have groups like "Anonymous" to fight against them.  There are many great YouTube clips by Anonymous that everyone should see.

Sneaky segue, Rod-less Faces to Rod-less Beck, so to speak.
We seem to expect that just because someone has a specific talent for music or some other art, or looks good in front of a camera, that that have some great credibility, depth or insight. I often wonder why? they are just people. I am great at trivial pursuit, what does that buy me?

Besides, I have it on good authority that today's 12-22 audience see Beck as an Elder Statesman.

I agree, about the listening, I always say the same.  Still, there is a misguided tendency to defend the aspect to which Stingray comments on.  People do not know how diabolical the organization in question is.  If we let every criminal organization hide behind the shield of religion, then the next thing you know the mafia will simply call itself a religion, Nazis will say they are a religion, and, worst of all, Fred Flinstone and the socialists will say that they are a religion.  Holy F'ing shite!!!

"Such a beautiful way to break my heart."  What does that mean, exactly?
Just noticed, but are the beginning notes "borrowed" from Talk Talk, something off of Eden, I think?

I'm not too crazy bout this Beck kid,,dragging this song around.
I like this song, but the broken chords in the background sound very close to an old Velvet Underground song. Can't remember which one though.

Brilliant series. A friend once tried to convince that "Law and Order" was better than "Homicide." (Really, Bob. Not your finest hour). After I stopped laughing, I took him to school.

Thanks for pointing out the Youtube clip. It pointed up one thing I liked about the series—the relatively freer flow of dialogue and action than you'd normally find in a TV cop series. Things were looser, more natural, less scripted.

Case in point: during one episode, several detectives and a bunch of cops are examining a dead body in a fairly empty parking lot, around dusk I think.  As the detectives are bantering and sharing a joke about their jobs, a kid in his teens runs into the middle of the group and collides with one of the detectives. They grab the kid and make a joke—and then another group of cops grab the teenager and arrest him for a purse snatching that took place a few blocks away.

On TV, it wasn't a major scene but it looked real—almost superfluous, but real. Because it was. The actors playing the bantering detectives were shooting a scene in the parking lot when a real-life purse snatcher ran onto the set and into the group of actors. The cops who took the kid away were also real, as was the bust. The actors stayed in character, the cameras kept rolling, and the director left the scene in, untouched.
Beck's done some solid work, but this one's maybe gone around the block a few too many times.
More Beck is better...   Bumper Stickers should be issued...

Live Beck even BETTER: go see him on tour!

It was this song given as sample to test Windows Media Player in Win ME ?
No excuse can explain this lame album art.
Album art rated below a "5" {#Yell}....  Beck's an awesome artist though.
I also do not like all of his music. But there is no question about his talent. Did he also the album cover?  Nice song, by the way!

Quaalude mood music.
An underrated song from an underrated album. Love it. I'd ask for more Beck, but I listen to so much anyway that it's hardly necessary.
This is one of those Beck songs that has grown on me even more over time. 7 8

A bongy quality huh?
Beck almost never does wrong.
Good tune.

Lazy, floating, dreamy... solid 7, and counting.
Like this!
uuuuuuuuu,such a beautiful song
Such a cool smooth tune to float such piercing lyrics.
A few years back, I chatted with Beck at a party. Completely down to earth, nice guy. No attitude whatsoever. What struck me is his fearless integrity to just have fun, create different music and get it out there.
Cool

Listening to this, I realized now why I don't like Beck.  It's totally irrational, though simultaneously rational.  He's not Jeff Beck.  When I first heard the name "Beck" credited for one of Beck's songs, I thought, "ZOMG!  Jeff's taken too many mellowing agents!"  It takes a lot to get over such first impressions.  I'm not over it yet.

I'm sorry, but that's just ridiculous.  Get over it!
