they should have left this as an instrumental. I've never heard this before, but before he started singing, this sounded so powerful, really evocative of a large epic stage production, mechanical and atmospheric, full of steam and darkness. The singing wrecked it, IMHO

Mostly agree although some of Genesis' more pop-oriented works—which seem to have Collins definitely leading the band—aren't bad. I came to like "Invisible Touch" for instance, esp. "Land of Confusion." The video with the Spitting Image puppets was a lot of fun, and the cover by Katzenjammer was great.
Some of the pop hits that I've hated back in the day weren't that bad. It was all the relentless hype and excessive number of plays that got to me.

I Love all the Gabriel Genesis albums, and I feel opposite about Collins Genesis.
This song was used during one of the best episodes of "Magnum PI."

Awe don't. Back in the day he/they ruled... there live shows were awesome. The band was tight with Lee Sklar on bass and Darryl Strummer on guitar and Chester Thompson on drums (except on "in the air tonight"

Here is a song I thought I'd never hear again in my lifetime. I distinctly remember when this song came out (I was in high school) as it received a lot of airplay in my neck of the woods.

Wow Wow Fred. Genesis in the studio from 1969 - 1997. Whilst longevity is not an indicator of quality, the band certainly had something going for them. In my view they were certainly a great, original and innovative band certainly up to and including the album, "And Then There Three" in 1978. Whilst I am not a great fan of Phil, I think he really damaged the band, I am great fan of Peter Gabriel and particularly the music he continues to produce since leaving Genesis.
I've been vindicated. I like Genesis (with Phil at lead) and Bill plays them so

Phil Collins was one of the heaviest handed drummers in the business back in the day. Eric Clapton tabbed him to do all of his drumming in the mid-80s. This while he was having incredible successes on his own as a solo artist and with Genesis.
Even though you don't like his work with Genesis, he did guide the band to phenomenal success in the 80's. Duke, Abacab, Genesis, and Invisible Touch (all albums that he was integral in creating with the band) ALL went #1 in the UK. His solo albums Face Value, No Jacket Required, and Seriously Folks... ALL went #1 in the UK. No Jacket Required was the Grammy winning album of the year in 1985 and featured 3 #1 songs in the US. No other artist had as much success in the world in 1985. In the Air Tonight is one of the most iconic songs of all time. We get it that you don't like a particular type of music but you are WAY off base saying that Phil Collins has "barely a musical bone in his body".
As for Brass Eye... I can't imagine why Phil was upset. Everyone likes to have a good paedophile joke played on them, don't they?!?

Such brilliant musicians. Such a waste of talent from the "Then they where tree album" and later. Going from prog to pop to puke. No difference between Collins solo stuff and Genesis post 70s.

If only Phil Collins had kept Genesis going in this direction. I didn't mind his middle-age nostalgia trip per se. But he never should have let down his bandmates by turning them into backup musicians for his solo act.
Listening to this today, it's hard for me to imagine that I liked this stuff back in its day.

You can say what you like about Phil Collins but there aren't many who can pull off what he did in this song.
