For all you Van lovers, "Belfast" is a must see. With Van's songs and lyrics so tightly interwoven into the story line, I end up thinking that Kenneth Branagh sat down with Van to learn about his life in Belfast and to hear the stories behind all his amazing music. Then sat down and wrote a screen play based on the tales Van shared - with the accompanying tunes!

You realize that I gave it a '1', not a '10'...right?  Perhaps it was necessary back then -- perhaps Van Morrison himself was even necessary as a songwriter.  But his songs have not aged well, and his voice is almost as bad as Bob Dylan's.

The language (in this instance) hasn't changed.  "Fag" has always meant a cigarette in Brit-speak.
But you make a good point.  For example, Arlo Guthrie (not a Brit) uses the word "faggots" in his song, Alice's Restaurant.  Would not go over well with audiences today.
C'mon....this tune does NOT warrant a 5.8!! {#Chef}

I cannot believe the RP rating listeners have given this song. Van is a great artist and while this is not his best effort it's pretty darn good. Give it a snowman.

He's turned into a GOM, by all accounts.
I got so sick of hearing 'Brown-Eyed Girl' in '66; I can't stand anything he does, and this song especially blows.

Really wish RP would play the best song on the album, perhaps the best one Van ever did: "I'll Be Your Lover, Too".

Van did another version on the very end of the movie "Proof of Life" (Russell Crowe & Meg Ryan). That version is even better.

C'mon Bill!

Cake covering anyone but Yoko Ono would be a gut-wrenching letdown. And that's because almost everything that Yoko's done is wretched.

I'm thinking Sesame Street isn't going to be ripping off a song about the porn industry.

I admire him for having the guts to have a chorus that goes like that .  I think it's a fine song.
 gvan wrote:

That riff is a variation of a pretty standard R&B or "boogie-woogie" shuffle, which predates either song mentioned here.  Marvin Gaye's 1963 hit "Can I Get A Witness" is one example of its prior use.  It's application is somewhat heavy-handed in this tune, and not in a good way.

"Birthed" - WTF?

VM never meant much to me!

I know, I know....! STILL!!
The only reason I'm giving this a 2 and not a 1 is the Sesame Street horn section. For comedy purposes only. What? They weren't trying to be ironic and funny? Oh. Definitely a 1.

A very good song from an underrated album of Van's.  Not the best song but it was a hit.  An overlooked gem from the same album was I've been Working.

I like Van, but good God this is annoying.
This just was never very high on my listening list even though it's a contemporary.
Not until Steely Dan comes around will there be a better song about the porn industry.
