I purchased James Brown plays James Brown where he does instrumental covers of his stuff.  1965 mono pressing. I did not know he played the organ. He does Parts 1 and 2 of this cut.

Just saw the documentary "Mr. Dynamite".
Really, really good.
Highly recommended to anyone even slightly interested in James Brown or that era of musical history.

Listen to some traditional "African" music, and then American "soul" music, and then see which one JB is most like. Hint: it's the former. If you had to pick an American artist that's a real embodiment of African music, it's the Godfather of Soul.

Back in law school, one of my classmates did a parody of a law review symposium issue.  Among the papers presented at the mythical "Jurisprudence and James Brown" confab was "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag, But Can It Be Searched? The Fourth Amendment Decisions of the Rhenquist Court."

My seven year old son just came in and announced to me that "this song is in Mrs. Doubtfire!"

I told him that this was James Brown, the Godfather of Soul. Hopefully he will remember this.

I am proud that my son can recognize Bob Marley songs, Grateful Dead, and now hopefully James Brown. Thanks, RP for being the sound track of my son's musical education (as well as Mrs. Doubtfire of course!).

Let's just say it was of a religious nature and we discussed Jesus.  He was interested in talking about his life and directions it had taken and people he has known over the years, like Gladys Knight, and repentance, and prayer. Sorry it can't be crazier, but it was mostly me listening.
