Mouths to feed, shoes to buy
Rent to pay, tears to dry
Brand new world
I can't relate
Let us choose
To not participate

Open up
Let me wander in
Your heart is not
Such a tender thing
Brand new world
I contend
Only love

Will stop the withering

Oh, to lie in wait
As the shadows and the shapes
Spill across the walls
Like a river
Deep
In spate

Four am
Dark reality
Brand new world
And my heart
Is missing

He'd probably have a problem with "a bustle in your hedgerow".
Bumping it to 9 because i love the cowboy junkies
Heartbreaking tune.  One of their best works.  The string section elevates it to heavenly proportions.

Sibling excellence.
Margo, vocals drip like honey from her tongue. The caution horses is a must hear while here in this life.

Violin/viola melodic bridge was borrowed from DC group Getaway Car who may have borrowed it themselves.  CDGA, like an artists pallet is open to anyone for exploration.
Likely just coincidence but used to great effect.  So heartening to hear again.

Thanks for letting me know.  I was under the impression that I like this quite a bit, until you set me straight.
Maybe a tad bit overproduced compared to their other body of work but nice .
Kashmiris!!
 excellent tune rate it 7

I love the cover art...a heart tied in a knot. Pretty cool.

It is a neat picture, though the knot pictured is a simple overhand knot - perhaps the simplest knot of all, but no less visually engaging for it.
The strings on this take it up to a whole other level. Lovely.
Marvellous!!

Great drum track!
I wouldn't even know about Cowboy Junkies if not for RP, like 9 years ago.  Late to the game as I am, I love everything they do.
Great segue from Running to Stand Still Bill!
I saw them live (if you can call it that). I thought Margot was going to fall over. She stood there swaying with her eyes closed for the entire show. I damn near did - out of boredom.
ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I don't think you could make that knot.
Wow, I think I actually noted a bit of life in this one, at the very end.

I have to agree...her voice just makes me sleepy.

Finally! Another Junkies song! Thanks Bill!
like it - wish I would have thought of this album cover concept
I'm beginning to see some analogy with a few other songs, like Stairway to Heaven or Free Bird, and this almost comes close, a slow build-up and then a change of tempo to an exhilarating climax, but I'm not convinced it quite makes it. Perhaps 'twas not the aim.
Not a big fan, but this one is great.  8

Yes.  But where do you hear "tons" of Cowboy Junkies every day?

Well, um... I just like it 'cause it looks like a heart - a simple but powerful image.

There aren't a lot of songs about being a parent, or even just referring to being a parent, but in addition to this one, there's also My Little Basquiat
skipping the obvious.. this Band has been good for a long time....
Very nice. Not usually into this band.

They're good for ya.  Take at least 1 a day with everything else.  It's like taking a nap while you're awake, and I like 'em too.

I agree.  It's sooo coool . . .

...bit of an i grieve thing in this song, i just realised, not sure which one came first...

It must take enormous discipline to make such consistly passionless music.  3

You have no clue about their portfolio.
Wow.  I've been out of touch w/ the Cowboy Junkies for a few years, but this is amazing.  {#Sunny}
there is a lot of the Cowboy Junkies that I don't care for, but I like this one.

Cool album art.
I like the graphic simplicity of the album cover.
This is quite a departure from their usual meandering and contemplative musings. In other words: less boring. A 7 for now.

I'm usually a one song guy ... rarely do I listen to an entire album.  "Lay It Down" from many years ago is a go-to album for some good, hunker-down listening.  Or when I'm cranking something out in the kitchen.  Check it out.

GREAT!{#Meditate}

Very nice, grows on me a little more each time I hear it. 8
Very nice . . . would like to see more of this tangent from CJ
CJ's do this tune oh so very right.  Love it.
Great song
Nice. I think they sound really good with the strings backing them on this one.

Your problem, not theirs. They left mediocre way WAY behind with their very first album. joshfm wrote:

I was a little slow. I just caught the "knot" reference below. Duh.....
hasn't the whole affectless affect thing worn a bit thin?
Frawg wrote:
This is "slow and melancholy"?!? Are you living in hyperspace or what? s
Let me translate: All their songs are slow, which means not fast, and melancholy, which means not happy---more or less. Margo couldn't sing up tempo if she received electroshock therapy. Imagine her trying to cover Helter Skelter. If only Margo lived in hyperspace--or at least got hyper once in a while. I reckon her orgasms sound like sad sighs.
I really, really like this. It resonates so well with me at the moment. ...and I love the arrangement of the instruments. off to my Amazon wish-list.....
Only having heard this a few times, I already give it a 7. I have a feeling it's going to go up, this one is growing on me fast.
i love the path they have taken...couldn't get Lay It Down out of player for months, then started buying copies for my friends
Excellent!
Very nice indeed. Particularly nice lyrics.
