In geometric order
An insulated border
In between the bright lights
And the far unlit unknown
Growing up it all seems so one-sided
Opinions all provided
The future pre-decided
Detached and subdivided
In the mass production zone
Nowhere is the dreamer
Or the misfit so alone
(Subdivisions)
In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
Conform or be cast out
(Subdivisions)
In the basement bars
In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out
Any escape might help disprove
The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
The restless dreams of youth
Drawn like moths we drift into the city
The timeless old attraction
Cruising for the action
Lit up like a firefly
Just to feel the living night
Some will sell their dreams for small desires
Or lose the race to rats
Get caught in ticking traps
And start to dream of somewhere
To relax their restless flight
Somewhere out of a memory
Of lighted streets on quiet nights
(Subdivisions)
In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
Conform or be cast out
(Subdivisions)
In the basement bars
In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out
Any escape might help disprove
The unattractive truth

Having seen them live helps here. Hard to argue with the musical ability when each musician is in the top 10 (or at least 25) of their craft.
The rock mix is on FIRE tonight! Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Rush? Am I in heaven?
one year later: same lineup, great evening
Why don't you just tell us how you feel without using such vulgar language. Where were you born? In a pigsti
Always had difficulty with that voice, though the guitar work is amazing. Too bad it gets so on my nerves.
this song is kinda growing on me.
My first concert in Québec city, wow !
you could create a 2nd account and rate it 10 twice ?
kinda wish the singer would shut the fuck up.
shit song
Why not just hit the skip button? no need to tell us how you feel about a song or band...none of us care.
kinda wish the singer would shut the fuck up.

Probably because he doesn't have the intelligence to do so. As my father explained to me when I was a child, "People who swear a lot, are just showing the people around them that their vocabularies are far too limited to enable them to express themselves properly."
My question to Stetsonman comes from an old saying: "Why do you not keep such thoughts to yourself, rather than display them so openly, and reveal to all who read them, the limits of your education?"
My ex-wife's mother, one of the most intelligent and well-read people I've met (three Bachelor degrees and a Master's in Ancient Greek) swore like a trooper; she maintained that a well-chosen swear only added zest and seasoning. She had a formidable vocabulary.

Heh, no really, always thought this was vastly overrated within the Rush ouvre. Some great drumming of course, but an overdose of synth cheese.
Alex's solo always sounds like he didn't like the song much either.
Zzzzzzz. Man these guys are boring. Can’t stand the voice
You are sick..
Absolutely!!
... Unlike "hacks" like Bill Bruford or Alan White?

A "sticks man" of the highest order.
He went through so much grief in his life.
Thank you for this.
R.I.P
Bill, Please dig deeper and play older and better songs from Canada's Best Band.
They are abundant and super easy to find.
I never realized Neil wrote the lyrics ..so true and poetic
Here is a fantastic interview with Neil by Rick Mercier (Canadian). circa 2010
Fun and informative. Plus The Rick Mercier Report is a wonderful show to watch..as you shall see

Peart was a big reader and it showed. Watch interviews with him on youtube. One of the most articulate people I've ever seen (we're talking fully blown thoughts off the top of the head)
I know...it's sacrilege, like replacing Gord in the Hip would be, and yes Geddy's voice isn't what it was when this album came out....but a fan can dream... and Geddy, Alex and Gavin would be a pretty awesome trio.

It's also funny that the same person calling other people "idiots" has proclaimed U2 and Metallica to be "three man bands". The irony is strong with this comment.
Just wow, Neil. Your lessons from behind the drums and in living life will forever inspire and motivate us.
They were simply the greatest. The sorrow I feel right now is crushing. Thank you, Neil. For so much.
They were not quite the importance to me, but I do enjoy their work, and especially like the 2213 book of shorts inspired by Rush, I was also glad to hear Neil was a rider and like me, liked long distance/adventure riding.

My first concert at Radio City Music Hall, 1983.
Wow, still a big wow.
Maybe the same show that I got hit with a beer bottle at and went to the hospital. 8 stitches on the chin. Fun times.
It's funny how some people believe their opinions about music are scientific facts and assert that those whose opinions differ from their own must be "idiots".
TOTALLY AGREE!!! Saw the Counterparts tour, Roll the Bones and one other that I can't remember
Fortunate enough to have attended the Permanent Waves Tour, Moving Pictures Tour, and the relatively recent Time Machine Tour. But alas, the touring days are over.

As a teenager listening to this (in the UK) I was confused for a while, wondering what the connection was to mathematics. It was only a year or three later that I found out what the term meant in the US/Canada - doh!
This song was one of the highlights of the show for me because I've loved it ever since I was a kid, and its rhythmic complexity makes it interesting to this day. The accompanying videos showed scenes of Canadian suburbs life in the 80s, kids playing at arcades - especially the Tempest video game - the whole experience nearly gave me a nostalgia-gasm!
However the Suburbs ROCK.
Obviously, a scratch on the Rush LP. Shoulda left it in the dustbin where you found it .
The last Rush show I attended (2013?) the line for the men's room was a mile long while the women's was wide open! Usually just the opposite. Either way, PLAY MORE RUSH!
As a woman, and a Rush fan for more than 30 years, I'm always happy to see a short line for the restroom! And yes, when I saw Rush at Shoreline in Mountain View (California), the line for the women's bathroom was short. In fact, a man came into the women's room (we didn't mind) because the line was so much shorter, LOL.
Bill & Rebecca... Thank You for programming it at 6:30am.
A fabulous way to begin my Friday morning !!!!!!

Rush should write a song about you two...
You obviously have never attended a Rush concert. The last three Rush tours I have attended indicate the number of woman is increasing.

I can only assume you swallowed a fly as you were writing the comment.
Must be the complexity. We're all just a bunch of mouth-breathers here in the US.
Well...ok...but we got baseball!
(what was the question again?)
Speak for yourself. We can hear all y'all Texans breathing way up here in Minnesota...
Hodor
I thought they sucked , but that might have something to do with the copious amounts of tequila shots I downed that night .

Is Nascar popular in the US?
Thank you for proving my (larger) point.

Is Nascar popular in the US?
Rush had some big hits, but I get the feeling that the band didn't didn't have widespread popularity in the US beyond those few songs. Was it Geddy Lee's voice or the complexity of the music?

You asterisk ass? Do you also say you're "TO'd" instead of ticked off?
Cindy? Is that you?

Probably due to the environment you were subjected to. Glad to hear that you now have a chance to enjoy it .
Been a fan for 35 years but dislike the way they're currently reselling their back catalogue- not good
Well, if you miss Rush they have just announced the R40 Live 40th Anniversary Tour in 2015!
Celebrating their 40th anniversary.
Bill, I thank you, I truly thank you for PSD button!!!

I know that this is all subjective and beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I followed their entire career and saw then whenever I could. Awesome musicianship and really nice people. Thank you RP for including this.
