This flower is scorched, this film is on
On a maddening loop, these clothes
These clothes don't fit us right
I'm to blame
It's all the same
It's all the same

You come to me with a bone in your hand
You come to me with your hair curled tight
You come to me with positions

You come to me with excuses
Ducked out in a row
You wear me out
You wear me out

We've been through fake-a-breakdown
Self-hurt, plastics, collections
Self-help, self-pain
EST, psychics, fuck all

I was central, I had control
I lost my head
I need this, I need this

A paperweight, junk garage
Wedding ring, a honey pot
Crazy, all the lovers have been tagged

A hotline, a wanted ad
It's crazy what you could've had

It's crazy what you could've had
It's crazy what you could've had
I need this, I need this

It's crazy what you could've had
Crazy what you could've had
I need it, I need this

It's crazy what you could've had
It's crazy what you could've had
I need this, I, I need this

It's crazy what you could've had
I need this, I need this

It's crazy what you could've had
Crazy what you could've had
I need this, I need this

Crazy what you could've had
Crazy what you could've had

I like the studio version too, but this is better!

It's boring.

Fully agree to you statements about R.E.M.
But the old people might be right.
Skip.
Little too repetitive for me.

Yep - couldn't have said it any better.

They were very good in the 90s, but I would say they were even better in the 80s.

I would posit one of the best American bands *EVER*!
I still have the shirt from this show.  I miss the Bridge School concerts deeply.  Thank you Neil and Pegi for all the great memories.
Edit: Neil Young following this in the playlist was a nice touch!
Just wow, innit

The definition of an overrated band is one that most people like but you don't.  Take a look at the ratings and you'll see why REM gets so much play.  The haters have to complain, but the ratings tell the true story.

I don't know, Nights Swimming.  Just saying.
I dearly miss REM. :(
There is an appropriate amount of rage in this song. Comes through extra strong in this live performance. Wroth a +1 on the rating from me.

R.I.P. Bridge School Concerts.
Last week I realized my 2007 shirt is in surprisingly good condition; I wore it last weekend.
R.E.M. may hold the record for most RP plays to lowest "overplayed/rated" song comments.  I find I like a lot of their songs (i.e. 7's) yet I don't know if I KNOW the songs well....this one for instance, I didn't know he said "fuck all" at all until today....so my 7 is now an 8...Long Live RP!!

Yes. It tears at something deep inside. Haunting. Amazing.
Wow...
One of the best bands of the 90's if not *the* best.
We judge music but is there a true music judge? Some songs are rated by ones mood. We have all rated the same song differently at different times because of what we are feeling and thinking at that time. Some songs will be your best no matter what. The songs that trigger goosebumps.Good sad songs should reflect somber feelings and upbeat happy songs will uplift ones soul and put a jag in your step.

The Bridge School Benefit Concerts were always a great experience and a Bay Area tradition since I was a child.  Sadly last year they didn't have one, and it seems like it won't be happening anymore.  I think I still have the t-shirt from this year somewhere.  So many great memories!
I was introduced to the annual concert by my parents, and the last few years I was able to get some backstage passes through some connections, and brought my mother.  I managed to get photos of my mother with Neil Young and Dave Matthews and it was great to give her that "VIP" experience as thanks for introducing me to great music.
This band and songs like this broke the ground for a lot of the Indie music I like now.

I was at this show at Shoreline Amphitheater. Haven't missed a show since '98. REM put on a great show that night! Long live the Bridge School....Long live Uncle Bernard Shakey!

Perfect.
1984?  No sir.  {#No}

Exactly.
This could be the anthem to my first marriage, sadly, but it hits all the right notes and pushes all the right buttons. I can understand people not liking it. It's not a nice song. But it's damn good.
I need this.... song to end.
I burned out on REM serveral years back. Thanks for reminding me why I liked REM in the first place.
Yes, this was the guy Richard Shindell reminded me of, though Richards seems less quirky.

ok, that has just ruined this song for me forever. and maybe even other REM tunes. but on the bright side, it made me laugh out loud. {#Silenced}

Great...
I prefer the Iron Maiden version.
Shut up, Stipe.
He whines and brays like a goat.
I've heard better live versions of this tune, but it's always great.
Quite possibly my favourite song ever!  Just had to grab my guitar and play along.

This isn't a bad live version, but I think I like the album version better. Excellent song, this version just isn't as compelling as the album version.
I don't know if this is the same live version I've heard or not, but if it is, it's on a CD called "Got Live (If You Want It)". It was a various artist CD that came out in the late 90's that featured live songs by Athens, GA / Atlanta artists (REM, Josh Joplin, Kevn Kinney from Drivin N Cryin, Shawn Mullins, Five-Eight, etc.). Here's a link to the CD on Amazon.com - (click here)
somehow REM, Pearl Jam and Counting Crows end up in the pile of really good bands that I cannot stand...but I always recognize their music

Yes, what he said...twice.
Haunting music from a relatively weak album. Still love this one after many years. Also one of the few songs that Stipe actually bothers to sing.

Absoutely, great performance.
Not a big fan,think I only have one CD from R E M,but this was live= instant 8 or 9....hmm #9.
I'm glad to see all of you shallow little creeps are still chiming in on R.E.M.
whining and moaning in minor key.... not my fave kind of singing. So annoyingly depressing. I could have had a coffee break during this one.....

Anyone who thinks REM hasn't changed or that all their songs sound alike hasn't heard all of their songs. Likewise the criticisms of Stipe's voice don't hold water if you've ever heard him sing Amazing Grace a capella while sitting on the edge of a stage. The guy CAN sing.
Do I have this right? "It's crazy what you could have had".

A brilliant Stipe slice of life:

"We've been through fake-a-breakdown

EST, psychics, fuck all"

definitely a goosebump moment . . .

This must be one of the biggest wanker, whiner, monotonous, neverchanging, tedious bands ever. My god. Have I used all the applicable adjectives yet. Blech! They should have faded away around 94 and done the world a favour.

Not the same version, the version on that set includes a few lines of spoken word at the beginning, and a rather nice solo by PB at the end.

Dear Lord - "I lost my HEAD" not my PET. Couldn't you have at least been one of the lemmings complaining about his voice instead of embarassing yourself like this? It's too late now. Oh, and this song kicks ass. Deal. TJ
Oh, man, the associations with this one. (Well, with the studio version--but this is great.)

Disagree. This was a favorite late night long road trip CD (Out of Time), the whole CD yes, but the intensity and haunting feel of this one song always shot my pulse rate up, kept me awake for many more miles.
