Even if it were true that Trump stayed within legal bounds and just exploited loopholes in the tax laws — a big “if’ — we are still left with the issue of transparency. He chose to run for President and he now is running again as an incumbent. Transparency comes with that territory. It obviously is not sufficient to bellow “fake news.” If he has done nothing unlawful or unethical — and nothing that would make him appear less than what he claims to be — he could put this to rest by releasing his tax returns  and explaining as necessary. My instincts tell me that, given how hard he has fought to not release those returns, there is something within them that he does not want revealed to the public. I mean, this is not a man who stands on principle.

That is all true, and he has a history of fraud.  He will tell a bank a building is worth $100M, and then tell the tax folks it's worth $5M.  My favorite Trump play (so far) was his "All County Building and Supply Maintenance" company.  The company (owned 100% by family members), would buy appliances for the rental properties, mark them up, and re-sell them to Trump properties at super inflated rates to avoid corporate income taxes and screw any partners out of their fair share.  That's not playing by the rules...it's breaking them.

What DJT knows from half a century of rule-breaking is:
- white people with money don't go to jail often,
- tax people working for the government aren't as smart as the tax lawyers you can hire with money, and
- the longer you delay the more likely you are to sooner or later find an IRS/State tax head who you can buy off either directly or indirectly.

All of the "hard-working" patriots who want to see manufacturing jobs and skilled labor return to the US seem happy to overlook the number of carpenters, plumbers, and small business owners Trump has bankrupted (personally) in the name of greed.

Kurt, you've been conned.  He never played by the rules and would scream to the heavens about a deep state and fake news if you did to him what he's done to you.

Just like any other swamp creature...
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump justified paying little or nothing in taxes in some years, saying it was a savvy business move and that the government would waste the money anyway.

Just finished the primary NYT article—will have to re-read as I hit MEGO point towards the end. But the Times will be running more articles about the tax returns in the coming weeks.

Well, in recent weeks, as we approach the first debate, we have our answer. Trump’s explanation: Biden is on performance- enhancing drugs! Here is today’s tweet from Trump on this:  â€œI will be strongly demanding a Drug Test of Sleepy Joe Biden prior to, or after, the Debate on Tuesday night. Naturally, I will agree to take one also. His Debate performances have been record setting UNEVEN, to put it mildly. Only drugs could have caused this discrepancy?”

This begs the question: How dumb are people thinking of voting for Trump? Better said, how dumb does Trump believe these people to be?

"This begs the question: How dumb are people thinking of voting for Trump? Better said, how dumb does Trump believe these people to be?"

AFAICT Trump supporters buy into a framework or narrative about America and Trump: the federal government is corrupt and Trump will straighten things out. The government serves the rich and/or is corrupted by liberals. Trump will drain the swamp and bring back power and jobs for the real Americans.

Trump supporters find that narrative more appealing than facts that contradict the narrative. So here we have Kurt apparently refusing to comment on the news of Trump not paying taxes and being in financial trouble. He'd rather drag conversation away from this troubling news by pushing a pointless argument about dictators and gun rights.

He's the past master at doing this. He will not face bad news about Trump. Or he'll dismiss it as part of a coup conspiracy against Trump. I doubt he's ever seriously considered the possibility that Trump really is a fraud and failure. Kurt's not dumb—it's just that he's so personally wedded to Trump that facts matter less than the myth of Trump being a great success for the Common Man.

As for Trump—he apparently doesn't think much of his supporters because he's stated that they'd happily let him get away with public murder.

I'm thinking they had bigger worries, with or without their guns (being a 0.75% minority in the population and seeing the laws enacted against them since '33). Your NRA talking point doesn't cut it.

Persecuted minorities don't get full rights! Who knew?!

Jews were German citizens.

I'll see your wiki and raise with my wiki ...

Weapons law and act of 1938

In 1938, the Nazi Party reformed weapons law thoroughly. Today, the Waffengesetz of 18 March 1938 (RGBl I, 265) is sometimes seen as a relaxation of existing regulations, even though it solely benefited privileged members of the NSDAP and its associated organizations.[8] The law stated that certain groups of NSDAP officials did not need any permit anymore for weapons possession. Amongst them were Unterführer of the NSDAP, starting from Ortsgruppenleiter, the Sturmabteilung, the Schutzstaffel, the National Socialist Motor Corps and also the Hitler youth, starting at Bannführer. The new weapons law also prohibited the possession of any weapons to certain groups of people, namely Gypsies and all individuals who lost their "Civil Honors" or who were under supervision of the police. The latter also included people convicted due to homosexuality.

Directly after the Kristallnacht, the possession of any weapons by Jews was prohibited through the Verordnung gegen den Waffenbesitz der Juden, enacted on 11 November 1938 (RGBl. I, 1573).

A contemporary report of the apostolic nuntius of Berlin to Eugenio Pacelli about the Kristallnacht stated: „Also, all weapons were taken from the Jews; and even though the purpose of that was altogether different, it was good, because the ideation of suicide must have been enormous in some.“[9]

Comrade KarmaKarma,

There are alternatives to the first-past-the post electoral system.  Most rich western countries have gone over to proportional voting systems.   Many of these countries exhibit far better socio-economic outcomes than the USA.

So why the angry strawman arguments?   Are you attempting to tell us something about yourself?

THE PRESIDENT’S TAXES
LONG-CONCEALED RECORDS SHOW TRUMP’S CHRONIC LOSSES AND YEARS OF TAX AVOIDANCE
 -NYT

Donald J. Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes the year he won the presidency. In his first year in the White House, he paid another $750.

He had paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years — largely because he reported losing much more money than he made.

—————————————-

Prediction:  If Trump loses this election, his business empire crashes and he spends some time in jail.  Then Hollywood will make a docu-reality-style TV show called The T Swamp.
