Great band but despite what rock critics say it is not a great song even though it got fair air play at the time. How about something off of The Family That Plays Together or 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus. Yes, please can this song and play something more representative of their talents. thanks, gk

Check out the book "Sounds Like Teen Spirit"  by Tim English.   The world is full of "borrowed"  lines and melodys.  The truth is there are only so many notes and combos.  Its inevitable.

it's a shame that the crooked courts ruled in the favor of Led Zeppelin when it is so obvious they stole it from Randy California.  Bad courts then, bad courts now.

I think "Stairway to Heaven" is Spirit's best original.

  
Yeah....sigh....it is more true today.  I've seen that gyre.  It's......impressive. 

Here's something even more impressive.  There are gyres like the one in the Pacific in all the other major oceanic areas, too.  But the most stupendously impressive aspect of all of it is this.  The human species pulls a major portion of its sustenance from those same oceans.  Forgive my "French" but we basically shit where we eat.  Tell me what other animal on this planet does this?  Me thinks we are not so intelligent as we like to think.

more Spirit please!  never enough, especially on misty cool mornings like today... flash back to a job I had as a 17 yr old,drove around with  Larry who had a Dodge van with an 8-track, with only Spirits' 12 Dreams and Neil Young's Harvest, we did household contracting and listened to these classics a real lot, even partyed while "working"

I remember doing that.  And our parents wondered why it was so hard to wake us up in the morning.

I even still have the actual headphones.  Why, I couldn't tell you, but I know right where they are and could even bust them out and plug them in in just one minute.

CKLW in Windsor, Ontario (across the river from Detroit) would play all the time on my AM only transistor radio in 1967-68. Then I graduated to WRIF FM. Still on a transistor radio. Had to sneak into the living room at midnight with my Dad's headphones on the family stereo when all were asleep. Stereo headphones were the BOMB back in 1970! My kids today don't have to sneak around for good music listening. Who knows what they're sneaking around for....*nervous chuckle*

I grew up in southern California - essentially all LA then and now - and it was quite a time to be alive and a music lover. I'm not sure there's really been anything like it since. So many bands doing what today would be far outside the mainstream - and still selling albums. And, no, I never knew anyone who thought there was any resemblance between the sound of The Doors and Spirit - nor do I hear any.

Wow!  I haven't thought of that show in . . . ages and ages.  I grew up in the northern suburbs of Chicago and used to listen the Circus on Sunday nights with the lights out and my transister radio turned down low and pressed to one ear under the covers.  I was probably about the same age as you were.  What a time for music.  Who has shows like that on the radio now, outside of public radio?  We've lost a lot of creativity.

All the more reason to appreciate Bill and Rebecca for what they do here.

Reading through some of the comments, I saw several references to them sounding like the Doors and... are you kidding me? I love the Doors and I love Spirit. As someone who was there when these albums came out, nobody— repeat, nobody— thought they sounded like the Doors. So please, give this excellent group their due.

The thing they have in common is they all come out of the same era and same area (southern California). So yeah, a similar period sound and engineering and stuff, but that's about it. Think of it like this: what if, forty years from now, people were commenting that Wilco sounded like Coldplay?

One of the anomalies of AM radio is that at night you can pick up stations from a long way away.  I lived in Goderich, Ontario, almost two full Great Lakes from Chicago, but one night when I was maybe twelve years old I heard this on Ron Britten's Subterranean Circus on WCFL.  It sounded like nothing else I'd ever heard before, and it was a game changer.

Interesting I should hear this today, for I just watched a DVD rental last night of them playing a smallish outdoor gig circa Dr. Sardonicus. Great video, with great sound, and it's very obvious everyone was thoroughly enjoying themselves (not always the case with stage performers). Ed Cassidy pounds a mean set of drums; I just had to turn it up and give more boost to the subwoofer. Highly recommended! You'll find it at your favorite mail order rental outfit.

Afterward I looked up Randy California on Wikipedia. I knew he had played with Hendrix at the ripe old age of 15, but hadn't realized he drowned while saving his son. So sad; the guy had gobs of talent!

And while I'm flashbacking, I saw them live with Fever Tree at Detroit's Grande Ballroom during the Pleistocene era...of course I can't remember a whole lot (if you remember the '60s, you weren't there).
