Well, The Golden Rose sailed with a broken man
Going south
Got on board with a woman to lead him around
By the mouth
(Chorus:)
And it's goodbye, Golden Rose
Yeah, it's goodbye, Golden Rose
Well, the captain who swears if he speaks at all
Wears a gun
Got a first maid who's never quite on the ball
For his son
(Chorus:)
And it's goodbye, Golden Rose
Yeah, it's goodbye, Golden Rose
Wish I was back in her arms again
Wish I was holding her tight
Wish I was back in her arms again
Safe from the night
She stood on the shore and she waved to me:
"Come back home"
Many a-night I would think of her
All alone
(Chorus:)
And it's goodbye, Golden Rose
Yeah, it's goodbye, Golden Rose
Going south
Got on board with a woman to lead him around
By the mouth
(Chorus:)
And it's goodbye, Golden Rose
Yeah, it's goodbye, Golden Rose

Oh, to be lounging late into the mornings in Pereira listening to this with lovely Edlisa, waiting for the chontaduro vendor cart to be heard outside, then we'd go and get some, with honey and lime-juice -- instant and best hangover cure in the world! and then we'd find some jugo de lulo, con leche, grab a papaya and some grilled pork shoulder, con arepas y patacones, por su puesto, and the days went by

Absolutely. Among the very best road trip albums I have come across.
This album is one of my favorites for road trips. This song always makes me wonder what the video is like. Seems like it would be an epic saga. Similar to Don't Come Around Here No More" or "Runnin' Down A Dream". Anyone seen a video for this one?

This Guy!

The fact that Radio Paradise isn't broadcasted on FM is a compliment in itself, so don't mind that moron-colleague of yours...
About the song, also hearing a lot of Pink Floyd in there, but that's not a bad thing at all!

Gooooodbye Tom Petty.
The lyrics remind me of that favourite old ditty "The Good Ship Venus", the words to which I used to know off by heart and which are way too 'adult' for a family-friendly radio station ;)

I really like TP's newer stuff. I think he is getting better with age.
This is a really cool song you would never hear on the radio.

I'll say it again...
TP is an American Hero. His music is simple, beautifully melodic, and absolutely reverant to the greatest lessons taught by all of the best teachers.
This album is really, really relaxing and enjoyable to listen to.

What a keen observation; I agree completely.
Quite evocative of David Gilmore's On an Island

Normally, my skin crawls at the sound of his voice. But this isn't too bad.
More Wildflowers please :)

Hmm.... Pink Floyd?
Tom's been listening to the production values or the song structures?
I kinda like Tom Petty.
A bit bad boy, cocky, a bit psychedelic, a bit counter-culture, slightly cranked up contemporary American folk music, simple, good song structures, nice melodies.
Tom sings better than Dylan or Cohen though I suppose that's not saying much.

BTW, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers totally rocked the Super Bowl last night!

This guy tries too hard to be deep and artful...and he's not.
Stick to the Rock 'N Roll, Tom.

Definitely "Echoes" of "She's So Heavy" in this one.
Not his best but he's earned his stripes, plods along minding his own...like a strange but entertaining Uncle

A couple good tune? Please. Do you listen to his music only when you hear it on the radio? Listen to Wild Flowers a few times and then tell me he's only got a couple good tunes. He's a legend in American music.
Ok, to begin with, he can't sing. But then again neither can Dylan.
Then there's the sound ... listen to King of the Hill by Roger McGuinn and you'll hear every lick Petty has.
Then there's the tunes. This one (a cumulative 6.1 from the august RP listeners) is exceptionally sucky. Then there's stuff like Mary Jane's Last Dance, which is a really highly rated track here but sounds to me like a below average bar band on a bad night.
Just sayin ...
Once again......AHHH...
I luv these tracks that get very little airplay...

Seldom a Prophet in your own contry,TP up in top in my book.

I disagree...and you got to admit the guy's famous...
Like every other Petty song except slow. The words are clear at least which is not true of Petty songs at normal pace. He has got the Dylan disease.
This is one of Tom's really introspective cuts. He is VERY talented, BTW .. and not just a rock and roll character with nutcracker jeans.

I can't believe anyone enjoyed palying this dirge

Thanks for the laugh. Except now thats all I hear when he sings.
boooooooooooooooooooooooring
I try to like TP but unless it's straight ahead rock-n-roll, it's
mostly just annoying and boring
B O R I N G
I was thinking of the Yellow Rose of Texas...

I am SO thoroughly tired of TP.
Why does he get played so much on RP?
Give us a break for awhile Bill, please?
He gets played because so many people at RP like him and his work. Including, I assume, Bill himself.
I suspect you ought to do what I do when something I don't like comes on. Use your mute and wait till something else comes on.
This strikes me as between "Pretty Good" and "Quite Likeable". I gave it a 7 instead of 6 since I respect Mr. Petty's body of work 'or the years. (keep him coming by the way)

Yeah. Not fond of TP, but this is working for me.
TP misses his honey..........great slow dance by the rock and roller with a good edge to it!
Yawn. Boring.
this song is growing on me
The 'Acceptable' rating was looking lonely, so I gave it company. That's just what this is...not very exciting or original, but not unpleasant, either. Just acceptable.
BTW, why's he saying goodbye to his golden roast? Did he overcook it or something? Oh, never mind.

A very different sound for Tom, and I like both old and new.
Love being first! Been liking the other tracks that I have heard. Not much like the old Petty, which is a good thing.
