I'd say that was a bit of an overreaction. And so unpleasant . . .
(Me, I like pretty much everything Radiohead does.)
Unfortunately, the original demos of this song are far superior to what ended up on the album. Not a bad album closer, but could've been better.
Still, I'll add my little can of gasoline to the fire and say that post OK-Computer is the real thing for me. Now, I can actually see where the haters come from but those who candidly admit liking Bends-era Readiohead and nothing beyond?? *scratchs head* Surely there's other bands who do that sort of thing better?! As per the claims of Radiohead going "off the wall once they got famous", pfffttt, I'm running out of time here.
Bends is something you can put on and enjoy the first time you hear it. Everything after that took something of an acquired taste, but once it burrows its way into your brain, zOMG, it's amazing!
The only Radiohead album I don't care for is Amnesiac. It's prolly about time to dust it off and give it another spin, but that one has never grown on me.
The constant quarrel of Radiohead lovers versus haters gets a little bit taxing here!

Good point, and fair play to ya. He does write decent enough songs, but his voice is just so weak and insipid and thin and plain whiney.

If they could ditch Thom Yorke I'd start buying their albums, as the instrumentals on Radiohead numbers are the dog's bollocks. Yer man Yorke always makes me reach for a wet herring to slap him round the chops with. Interesting percussion in the background once his whining stops.

however, this track here sounds just like all the other, post-OK computer incoherent dribbles that they just seem to keep cranking out.. i don't get it nor do i particularly want to. i can't believe they expect people to pay $$$ for this. as i read somewhere (regarding Kid A) years ago, this is the inevitable result of too much money and everyone telling you you're a genius.

No you are not "historically a huge RH fan if you lost them after OK Computer (and I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you liked OKC) . You have missed out on the most creative energizing force that has existed in the rock world for the last 15 years.

This is one fantasic album from an incredible band. Don't ever stop growing RH.
When you think about it, pretty much every album, even Pablo Honey, has a solid closing song. I've always thought Radiohead saves some of the best stuff for the last track. It really leaves a mark when you finish an album listen.

When I first heard them I couldn't stand them - mostly on account of Thom Yorke's voice. I even took the very unusual step, for me, of permanently deleting the audio files from my computer.
Two or three years later, two things happened: (a) I heard a couple of piano covers of Radiohead, in particular Christopher O'Riley's classical arrangement of "Exit Music" and Brad Mehldau's jazz trio cover of "Paranoid Android", that put these tunes in a different frame for me, if you will, and made me think of them differently; and (b) I learned that "OK Computer" was on the top of several reader polls and critics' lists of the greatest albums ever recorded.
Now, I'm not necessarily one to go along with the crowd, but I figured that where there's smoke there's a good chance of a fire, and that at least they deserved a new listen.
I now understand 100% why they've earned so much respect from so many wildly different quarters. Like a lot of other difficult music (see: Sigur Ros, late Coltrane), Radiohead's compositions reward multiple listens and a lot of concentration. Listen to it loud when you're alone and not doing anything else. It's not background music. It demands a lot from you. In return, you'll hear new things every time you listen to it.
Very well written. I had the same initial reaction to Radiohead and muted everytime they played on RP. Now they're one of my favourites.
I will definetely try to find the jazz covers you refer to.
The challenging, "difficult" music is usually the most rewarding in the end. The music that is immediately enjoyable is like candy, the flavour is soon gone.

i agree with an above poster though, i wish i could hear "15 steps" on this station.
For me, In Rainbows is quickly climbing into that rare air. Every time I listen to it, I like it more and more. I've never really been captured by anything Radiohead has done before, but this album is amazing. The rhythms that Phil Selway weaves in and out of the music, the guitar and bass magic of the Brothers Greenwood. And Thom Yorke's voice. Not really a great voice, I don't think. But no other voice in the world could so wonderfully meld all of those great songs into a great album.
