I know a girl laying down
She's sleeping
Weeks at a time
And when she wakes up
She watches TV
Counting cracks in the ceiling

No, I don't know what she's thinking
So I give up, waiting for someone waiting
Talking to someone, staring

I never come around
I never come around
I left her fifteen years behind
Girl's laying down
Never come around

So much for girl staying
In afraid of
Beeing needed
And seen she watches
The world on a screen
She's distant
And God knows I tried to leave her
But she's got a constant fever

I let it slip my mind
I never come around
I never come around
I left her fifteen years behind

I know a girl laying down
No, I never wasted my time
We have something in common
She's as different as I am

Personally want to thank RP and Bill for bringing Anna into my musical sphere. Love her voice.

I don't think she looks pissed off.... Together with the lyrics, she appears lamentable. Can only hope that she isn't/hasn't gone thru such a situation. She seems like, as mentioned here somewhere, "a fallen angel"! To these eyes, she looks absolutely adorable!

Oh Bill, that's priceless after Marvin Gaye's Let's Get it On. Even if unintentional.

The universe gives us some pretty amazing coincidences, doesn't it?

maybe because some of us are not fans of this? idk... ;)
William, what are are you trying to do to us at 11am on a work day playing these songs in a row!

Adele: Make You Feel My Love
Marvin Gaye: Let's Get It On
Anna Ternheim: Girl Laying Down

note to self:
I don't think my work colleagues appreciate me turning the lights down in the office!
hahaha!!
Oh, Bill. Swear all you want, but we know the truth.

For me 2007 was great too. I got married that year after being together for 5 years. That's 15 years ago. Still happily together. 20 years now. Half of my life.

As the previous poster wrote it's a half-step, alternating vamp (F# - G).  That (Phrygian - maybe?) chord combination was not "invented" by Jefferson Airplane.  But maybe she was inspired by that song - a lot of people were.

There's only a teeny passing resemblance to White Rabbit - the chords during the verse, alternating up and down a half-step.

This always sounds great.

Silly wish:  Listen to Ternheim perform in a coffee house setting where my friends and I get to sit within 4 metres of the artist.
Wonderful photo.
Powerful
I am very thankful for finding Anna here. Every song a 7-9. Thx Bill and Rebecca
I noticed that a few people mentioned Regina Spektor. I can definitely hear her take on the song in my head - a little more spare and her idiosyncratic phrasing. I doubt it'd be better, but it would probably be worthy still.
Anna Ternheim as a musical artist goes on a stunningly upward trajectory with every song/listen.

Bought the CD and quite like it.  Terrific for those whimsical moments.
The more you play her, the more I like AT, hope to have the chance of seeing her soon around here in Scandinavia!
I like the way she reminds me of Jon Anderson

Never get tired of listening to this. Think it's the combo of surreal yet prosaic lyrics driven by the inspired, somehow improvised drum score.
True genius.
So weird, the version on my album has a really annoying string hit along with that piano. This is so much better.

Is the rest of the CD this good or better?

This song stands up well after a few listens.

You've listed nine songs a ten, two by Hendrix and two by Led Zep, kind of puts your comment in context.
What an excellent song from an outstanding artist!

Don't be so hard on yourself, we all have regrets. The good news is you can still buy the album. Please use the RP links so they will get a commission.

Cheers,

It seems as if the most of the music here causes you "frustration", since the substantial majority of your ratings are "3" or below  - but I agree, the commentary here need not be limited to just the song itself.  Discussion of geometric arrangements is always a good thing.

I know Anna is awesome,  she is different as I am

What an amazing voice!

Sounds a little like Bjork.

Totally agree. My head jerked when she painfully rhymed leave her with her having a fever.  Did she really do that?  This rates as "acceptable" to me.

Anna Ternheim - Girl Laying Down, Live acoustic-piano (2006)

This performance was broadcasted on Studio Virtanen by TV8, a swedish tv channel.

calypsus, thanx for link. From the same: My hearts still beats for you It's amazing. Just no words.
Some days I think I'm just getting too old for this station when they play too much weird stuff that might be poetic but has no musical quality. Ok, maybe I need a Christmas carol or something, not the depressing music I'm hearing right now.
Love.

Like Grace Slick before the drugs took hold? With the Manic Street Preachers as backing band on this fab number?

Now that you mention it, I love this forum because it really doesn't have any rules - or obvious moderation.
Love the syncopation in this, frequently used to color a tune with edgy energy.

Same here...though I thought "syncopation" rather than "jerkiness".  But you gave me a new word to use so people don't look at me funny.  :)

The noodling on the electronics at the end ruins an otherwise unremarkable song...{#Crashcomp}

Perhaps Anna was laying bricks made from Goose down... In that case she would be grammatically correct in being a "Girl Laying Down"  {#Tongue}

You would still be an idiot though, Gednabb... {#Moon}

The more I hear this song, the more I like it. I'm definitely going to have to check out this CD.

Ironic that you correct her grammar but get her name wrong.

Give her a break, she isn't from this country.
And it should properly be 'I guess'
as in "I guess you have too much time on your hands."

This would be great played back to back with Tull's Alive and Well and Living In...!

I really like this one.....I'll have to check out the whole album—er, CD—whatever.

Getting really tired of hearing this one.

Verse is ok
Chorus is awesome... I love soaring choruses.

(Update:  After many listens, I'm no longer so down on the verse... the chorus still rules the roost though).
First time I've ever heard anything by this artist...not too bad. I would definitely like to hear more of her stuff.

Didn't Ternheim do a song for Buffy the Vampire Slayer?
I remember it was good. Her voice was perfect for a Buffy song.

In particular this song reminds me of my youth...how I left the girl I used to be 15 years ago.

Confused, twisted and so beautiful. Just like my high school girlfriend.........

They are her nameless minions, prepared to hunt down the next person who makes a Grace Slick comparison. Which of course, means I'm the next target.

OK, I can see the Jefferson Airplane reference to the build up of the song, particularly as she has a fondness for minor keys. But, please don't suggest that Grace Slick is a worthy model. Anna Ternheim can sing well. For all the significance that the Airplane had for their time and place, in many respects, Grace Slick was the weakest part of that band. And her warbling singing was really not so good, after all.
I didn't say Grace Slick could sing.

at first, I thought I was listening to that "Luka" chick. But then at the verse, I heard , like someone else said, Grace Slick. (If Grace could sing)
