Wow, their style has really evolved over the years!
I liked this better than the other PT songs that are on RP :)
I like them ALL, including this tune!!
Good view Steve, their bass player is doing something cool to the beat, following a bit maybe, that gives the music a distinct jazz feel. It reminds me of David Margen whom played on Santana's (dare I say) "post-acid-influenced" albums like Inner Secrets, which IMHO is an underappreciated jewel.
Them Porky-pines are a good band. They're on my List.
List works like this: listen on Hoopla free from my local library, then choose carefully at my local EllPeeHut spending the mas credit I have there from trading LP's. Yahoo- recycled music!
Santana's Inner Secrets is one of my fave albums of all time, those funky almost disco beats and incendiary guitar work.

Hilarious! You do mean the fictitious character Derek Smalls from Spinal Tap?
Steven Wilson would have written and performed all instruments on the original. Gavin Harrison replaced the drum machine on a subsequent release.
This is Wilson's space rock/Pink Floyd period which I think he finds a tad embarrassing years later. Personally, I enjoy a number of gems from the pre-Signify album period.
Did anyone even see the comment I was responding to? That said people who don't like PT should be kicked off of RP? You people can listen to whatever you want. I listen to RP all day every day so I certainly don't need to "troll" the PT song comments. I just come over and give them a rating and respond once in a while to something someone says. You can post all sorts of replies to me here and I won't see them until the next time I hear this song which I hope will be a long long time . As opposed to the real trolls who go thru each song by an artist and rate them a 1 whether they've heard them or not. Which by the way explains how I get a wide range of ratings for a band like the Dead. I can listen to a few of their songs and enjoy them, most of them I don't care about one way or the other, and some of them are ghastly. I don't rate them all a 1 just because overall I don't care for the band, just as you should not rate all PT songs a 10 because you love the band. They can't all be gems, can they? If this is a 10, what about their better songs?
Paragraph! If you're equating the Cure and Depeche Mode, I guess just because they're British and "new wave," then you have no business commenting on my music tastes. They're as different as night and day and one of them is a lot better than the other.
Now, as far as staying out of song comments: What? I'm not allowed to or supposed to say when I hear something I don't like? If nobody ever posted negative comments, we'd still be listening to this.
I have been reading Scott's comments here and there for some time now. He is actually a rather thoughtful commentator. Plus, I probably like his politics. :-) Note: his politics do not have to be the same as mine for me to like them.
So I reckon we give Scott a big generous blank cheque to trash Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson whenever he sees fit.
As always: De gustibus no es disputandum.
Both.
Steven Wilson is the renaissance man of the modern rock world. Nobody else can do it all as well as he does: writing, lyrics, melody, raw emotion, arrangements, production, etc.
His guitar abilities are very good, he simply compares himself to the best in the business. Such as Guthrie Govan.
Wilson's vocals are often understated but just as good or far better than many popular British progressive and alternative rock bands (example, Yes, Pink Floyd both of which are personal favourites).
Barbieri lends the unique sound and ambience to much of Porcupine Tree's music since and including the Signify CD.
Edwin is a very solid, disciplined bass player.
Drummer Gavin Harrison is brilliant and widely recognized as such. Former drummer Chris Maitland was very good too and provided some nice backup vocals to earlier PT albums.
Thank you.
Always pleasantly surprised to hear another great PT song. Love the effects and drive.
I wonder if they tour much? In the Midwest.
The Midwest needs to be more trippy.
The Midwest needs more music, period.
Seems like the best shows are always on one of the coasts.
Even when some of the good bands are touring the Midwest they'll go to Cleveland, skip Michigan and then to Chicago.
But I can't blame them by judging from the bad music on MI radio the good ones probably couldn't fill a small bar here.

Lame voice? What's your claim to fame? Can you sing?
Singer and lead guitarist Steven Wilson always mentions he is not impressed with his own guitar skills.
Bassist Colin Edwin is solid, I do not have the skills to judge his playing.
Richard Barbieri adds great textures to the music; whether that is brilliant is an opinion.
Drummer Gavin Harrison (not on this track) can most definitely not be denied brilliant musicianship. He is a genius.

if you are waiting for the end, you are missing the point.
Yeah, it requires a longer attention span than that of a house fly.

there are many, many people who could easily objectively deny their (allegedly) brilliant musicianship...............
But we don't care for them and in fact... they just don't count
If by "sucking" you mean you don't particularly care for their music, that's cool. But I don't think anyone would objectively deny their brilliant musicianship.

Right on, Deadwing!!
And you've sucked since June 22, 2005. I was unaware of your existence back then, I wish I could say the same for today.
Your angst is obvious. Why don't you tell that elephant to take his foot off of your foot.
Many folks think P.T. is a great group and crank their speakers waaaay up.. all you have to do
is push that little button marked mute for 3 min. and attempt to conquer your own private elephant......
Agree. Gotta love that guitar tone.
Cloud Zero is on the Up the Downstair 2009 re-issue!
It is really, really good!
Love those trademark layered guitars.
Sigh. Going to have buy this at some point.
Steven? Listening? Please remaster. :-) Would prefer to enrich your grandchildren, not astute collectors.

I Agree
Greed does tend to diminish awesomeness, doesn't it!!!
Wow.
Yes. Almost frightening. And who enjoys music when they feel intimidated?
Wow.
Muse - Resistance
Chroma Key - Colorblind
Porcupine Tree - Cloud Zero
Finally caught it. Steven Wilson at age 23ish on all instruments? Amazing.
I like.
For comparison, listen to Tinto Brass a few years later with the entire band.
Good call!
Greater than great, nice!

But Porcupine Tree is a great band, even if they don't work for you. And I think that the point we're making is that if they (Porcupine Tree) don't do it for you, then stay off this part of the site. We don't care for your negative opinions. We love PT and you don't ,fine. But get outta our faces. Okay?
I also looked at your ratings. You're f'd up! You give great reviews to the Cure, and terrible ones to Depeche Mode. You give some great ratings to some Grateful Dead songs and then terrible ones to others. I think that you're conflicted.
Here's the solution. Next time PT comes on RP, go to the window, open it and scream as loud and as long as you can. You're from Wyoming, so the chances that anyone hears you is really, really remote. By the time you're done PT will be over and your mind will be clear to pick on something else that is on RP.
If that doesn't work, then at least your neighbor in the next county will know that you are as messed up as we already know you are!

More or less, fourteen years of Porcupine Tree evolution.
Yay!
That said, keep it coming... this is why I listen!

Not true. Staircase infinities is bundled with Up the Downstair. So you get two albums for the price of one!
LOL!
And let's not forget - Gavin Harrison is one of the best drummers on the scene today.
Agreed, though he doesn't play on this album. His PT stuff starts in 2002 with In Absentia.

I got the set as a gift last Christmas. Great CDs....
Missed this..... Was making coffee and then listening to the LRC.
FYI. Normal from the Nil Recurring EP is up for peer review on the LRC (Listener Review Channel). It is a more industrial, metal-sounding version of Sentimental from the Fear of a Blank Planet LP.
And an even better piece IMO. It is a great piece of music with once again, lyrics that address contemporary, critical social issues. Go vote!
I cannot imagine Bill playing it in heavy rotation but the odd play would be pleasant.
I think this band is a waste of airtime. There I said it. Gonna kick me off too?
No Scott, we won't kick you off. You are entitled to your opinion as are we. The key is to not get personal or go into it too much. Some of us do that, even me on occasion.
