In a wooden boat in the shipping lanes
With the freighters towering over me
I can hear the jets flying overhead
Making lines across the darkening sky
And when the sun is going down I can take a taxi into town
And the waiter at the restaurant sets a table just for me

Wheels keep on spinning round
spinning round spinning round
Wheels keep on spinning round
spinning round and round
(alright)

So I had a plane to take me to a place so far away from you
Eventually we began to see that we could be completely free
And I could get away from you
And you could get away from me
And we could live each separately in our cities in the sun

Wheels keep on spinning round
spinning round spinning round
Wheels keep on spinning round
spinning round and round
(alright)

In a seedy karaoke bar by the banks of the mighty Bosphorus
Is a Japanese man in a business suit singing ((Platters:Smoke Gets In Your Eyes|Smoke Gets In Your Eyes))
And the muscular cyborg German dudes dance with sexy French Canadians
While the overweight Americans wear their patriotic jumpsuits

Wheels keep on spinning round
spinning round spinning round
Wheels keep on spinning round
spinning round and round

Wheels keep on spinning round
spinning round spinning round
Wheels keep on spinning round
spinning round and round

I don't know
I don't know
I don't know (Why you say you are not in love with me)
I don't know (Why you say you are not in love with me)

Why you say you (music stops) are not in love with me

Cake is just so musically entertaining.

I'm so glad I discovered them on Radio Paradise about 15 years ago!
Original as can be.  This song echoes many aspects of my divorce, and therefore resonates.  (But where is my sexy French Canadian?)
Definitely not the best Cake song.

I'm surprised you were optimistic they'd turn it around.
Had to scrape the cake right off my shoes.....

No seriously They have grown on me. At minimum I find their material interesting.

And the cover art makes me crave pulled pork for some strange reason. Well maybe not this one, but....

CAKE is not named after the bakery product, instead, the band has described it "like when something insidiously becomes a part of your life...[we] mean it more as something that cakes onto your shoe and is just sort of there until you get rid of it"

That by itself is enough for me to LOVE this band, the fact that I enjoy the witty sarcasm and interesting and varied musical styles and instrumentation just increases MY enjoyment of CAKE.  I get that others are not fans, and that's OK; plenty of shit to de-CAKE in life and I'm sure you can use the few minutes whenever BillG spins one of the many CAKE tracks in the RP library.

Long Live RP!!

I'm a firm believer that if you can't say something positive then better to say nothing at all but I just can't help myself.....quite simply, shockingly awful.
My ears tell me that I don't like Cake.  My waistline tells me otherwise.
..mmm while I do get the sentiment....I somehow now feel sick....{#Eh}
To all the haters: let them eat Cake.
Moving on.
I love cake,,,,,,just not this kind. I put this somewhere around Carrot Cake ,,which sucks

gee, why don't you really tell us what you think of Cake.....{#Wink}

They can be fun if you don't think about it too much and they definitely have an interesting catchy sound.

I totally agree. I would never sit down to listen to an entire Cake album because of the sameness of the songs, but I really enjoy a piece of Cake thrown into the mix from time to time.

I like the line about sexy french canadians ! {#Wink}
Love the Cake!  It's so refreshing to hear the band's unique and trademark sound.  The band's musical perspective is very valuable, in my view.
A 10 for me all day, every day. A lovely slice of cake.
Unfortunate audio.
Aargh, this band still sucks!
Love Cake! Love Wheels! Love Cakes on Wheels!! Song is not so yummy.

"And I could get away from you
And you could get away from me"

Right now that sounds absolutely goddamned wonderful.

It's the emotionally detached sarcasm in his "singing" that gets real tired, real fast. Every Cake song is like that. Learn to sing, fella, or let someone else take over now and then.

7/16/15 edit: Shoot. Me. Now.

Thank God for PSD —>  Koop — Come To Me (w/ Yukimi Nagano) . Hey it sounds like a MoTown B-side Christmas rarity but it's sonic salvation compared to Cake.
Cake. Such a unique sound. Loved them from the first quirky note I've heard.
Cake is a great band.
Love Cake
The plaintive refrain that ends this song just rips my heart out.
Aaargh! Still horrible!
I like Cake for many reasons, but the best is that my son likes them too!

Not a big fan of cake... sorry.
A permanent place on my travel playlist. Great music for the big escape after a breakup.

Reminds me of Singapore for bizarre reasons...
I love this Band.  Another great song!
I find this Cake downright objectionable.
Love Cake. One of my favorite Cake songs. Wish John didn't hate Americans so much though.

Another great bass guitar song........................ Yes!
Awesome!  Love the cake!
it's the sexy french canadian line he sings....well, i'm a bit biased to the French Candian(indian) ——wink—— Now i'm hooked. It won me....i like cake now...:)

One of the few tolerable Cake songs, but why is it back in the hot rotation again?  Someone die?
What about this sexy French Canadian?

Where did she live? Baffin Island? I mean, that's a bit like saying that American guys look like the banjo player in Deliverance. Besides, getting lumped in w/GWB really torques me ...
Talking instead of singing is great if it's cool, clever or really interesting (Lou Reed, William Burroughs e.t.c e.t.c). This guy just irritates the hell out of me.

This song is OK, but I fell in love with this band when I heard a song they did called "Frank Sinatra" at the end of a Sopranos episode.

Lets be fair. Initially I rated this a 2, but it's better than that. I don't like the voice, but I gave it a 4 anyway. And dropped back to 1. It's overplayed. The song annoys me more every time I hear it. I've passed the bounds of acceptance and moved Cake to my auto-mute list.

Does this remind anyone else of They Might Be Giants?(Another reason I like it.) Scores a 9 with me.

Please segue into The Stranglers' Life Shows No Mercy or Violent Femmes Blister in the Sun
I absolutely love Cake and TMBG -- my two favorite bands, excepting my own. Every time I hear Cake, I'm a happy girl.
cool stuff. diggin' this one a good deal more than their others that are in rotation.
"In a seedy karaoke bar By the banks of the mighty Bosphorus Is a Japanese man in a business suit singing 'Smoke Gets in Your Eyes' And the muscular cyborg German dudes dance with sexy French Canadians While the overweight Americans wear their patriotic jumpsuits" Beautiful! This always makes me think of Lost in Translation...
A great segue would be to John Lennon's "Watching the Wheels"i after this ("I keep watching the wheels go round and round . . ."). Bill?

Agreed..... the same way a lot of listeners throw "pretentious" around... I'm not sure some fully understand the meaning of the word. lester wrote:

Yikes! Well, hopefully RP is helping to make up for some of that lost time and music!

There are just too many contributors here that confuse eclectic with obscure or rare, arguing vehemently against RP playing songs that have ever enjoyed a degree of popularity. I'd heard of They Might Be Giants but never really knew much more than their name. I'm rather unknowledgeable about many of the newer performers -- say, The Police, U2, Bruce Springsteen, or Billy Idol. (No joke. These guys are great - first heard them on RP - bought @ iTunes.

Yes i agree, TMGB are eclectic Giants. and Flood is one of the best. But we are talking about CAKE!!!!! Stark straight up beat loving creativity. and addicting. the more you hear, the more CAKE YOU WANT!!!!!!!
There are few constants in life: death, taxes and ....... oh yeah ..... Cake.

I kind of dig the "Guitar Man" cover they do on it.
Very strange, very eclectic and great!
Cake is great!
Can't get enough cake -- I mean, Cake.

I'd love to sit at that table too! SC, Cake, TMBG, all hand in hand, like brothers uniting the world at the United Nations of Quirky Rock Music!

I am so sad for cake because, with the release of this album, I think they SUCK. I remember hearing "Never There" played at three in the morning, cranked on this hot-dog vendor's cart and thinking "This is what music is for", their first three albums were amazingly tight - this is crap - flame me on it if you like, I'm sticking to my guns on this one.

i like the bass and the the trumpet in this song. that's about it tho.
Hey! Oh no! Oh yes! Ok! Alright! This is my dictionary of Cake-isms. Is this self-parody that all their songs have these "isms" in them, or do they even realize it? Either way, it is pretty funny, and I continue to be a loyal fan! (Tell me honestly that you don't sing along with the Oh no! and the Ah yes!)
I just bought a Gary Fisher Cake mountain bike, and it ROCKS!
OMG they're saying different words in my left ear and in my right and in the middle and its so psychedelic it should be OUTLAUD
Ok. All right. Aww no. <-seems every Cake song has one or more of these interjections thrown in, cracks me up every time! I could listen to them all day. (and have, sometimes) Great driving music. A lot of their songs have automotive themes.
its growing on me. Kinda like it.
cake is cool,, i like cake,, better than pie most times,, cool song,, you sure can tell its caked,, alot of their songs sound the same,, but i seem to like them all
If you get a chance, see one of their shows. Excellent live.
gosh i love cake. just something so cool and playful about them. i enjoy everything by them. this song is just great
holy segue batman - 'Que Onda Guero' sounds very similar to 'Wheels', no?
You have to admit that these guys have zeroed in on their sound. You can recognize Cake within the first few bars... pretty commercial -- is that good?
here we are in the midst of the world according to cake, and i just don't think i like them a bit. my loss, eh?

I think Mccrea is really gaining more and more on his singing capabilities...and that is good. He is now more versatile
hey! if i want to hear demented pseudo-polka, i'll listen to tom waits! just kidding. a "6" for being pretty good...
Thanks for the Cake!
JAM, PHISH, CAKE...Hey, we're having a peek neek!
