I'm taking a ride with my best friend
I hope he never lets me down again
He knows where he's taking me
Taking me where I want to be
I'm taking a ride with my best friend

We're flying high
We're watching the world pass us by
Never want to come down
Never want to put my feet back down on the ground

I'm taking a ride with my best friend
I hope he never lets me down again
Promises me I'm as safe as houses
As long as I remember who's wearing the trousers
I hope he never lets me down again

We're flying high
We're watching the world pass us by
Never want to come down
Never want to put my feet back down on the ground

We're flying high
We're watching the world pass us by
Never want to come down
Never want to put my feet back down on the ground

Never let me down
Never let me down
Never let me down
Never let me down
Never let me down (see the stars, they're shining bright)
Never let me down (everything's alright tonight)
Never let me down (see the stars, they're shining bright)
Never let me down (everything's alright tonight)
Never let me down (see the stars, they're shining bright)
Never let me down (everything's alright tonight)

Great! Reminds of a Primus video. Where IS Primus on RP by the way?! A BIG missing.
Like a fine wine, It gets better with age and still sounds like the future. Cheers RP

I wear pants under my trousers, unless I'm wearing jeans (but they're still trousers...).

Sometimes, in the olden days, I didn't wear pants under my jeans.

My boy's called Tom.

I'm really confused now...

Still better than britches, ugh!

Yeah, fantastic use of the song in that first episode.  Got chills when it came on.  Great show by the way.  Looking forward to Season Two.
Who says the 80's never had great music?!?!?
Yaaaah!!

Ah..   Young and "in the moment"  What memories..

a 10 of course.
My BEST FRIEND and I listened to this on a Walkman with two headphones when we were travelling by train in the 90s. The train was completely empty in the summer and we were totally drunk when we came back from an incredible hitchhiking trip to Liège in Belgium. We ended up dozing in the luggage nets, and two stations later we were ordered down by the conductor...
DM - fuck yeah!!!
Remembering Andy Fletcher! RIP

Sometimes a very quiet member of DM, but important for sure!
My introduction to this song was the Smashing Pumpkins mid 90s cover version. It really captured something about that moment in my life.  I love the big, commanding, chilly original though. Great song, great band.
RP is feeding my Depeche Mode addiction

For me, this is one of the bands whose music always sounds disaffected, as though they don't care that much and they don't expect anyone else to care either.

Just remember when you follow the Masses; sometimes the M is silent.
just a 6 on this track.
I always love the parts when dave and martin sing together.
"Something totally different for RP" says the RJ.  But come on, this truly what RP is and I am here for: always something different.

But  I am a Depeche addict, an important detail.
Awesome then, Awesome now.

Nice attitude! I try to think of it like a composer, when the writing matters most, before it's ever performed. Beethoven may have been a whiz on the piano, but the pen was his best instrument.

Blatant gay love song which totally crossed over. Doesn't happen very often
A song written from the point of view of a dog?
Still one of my favorite songs of all time, and even better live. There's no other album quite like Music For The Masses, and I'd argue Depeche Mode's live show peaked on this tour. I saw them 3 times on the tour, including the 101 show at the Rose Bowl with Wire, Thomas Dolby, and O.M.D. Epic and memorable! A clear 10 for me.
I love depressed mood at times.
Never paid attention to the lyrics on this one. Certainly reminds me of a particular narcissist from the past. They nailed it.

Amazing how in 1987 these guys were laying down such trippy sounds as found nowadays in Shpongle's 'The Epiphany of Mrs. Kugla'

Me too! I was never that into 80s goth or pop music. More of a heavy metal and classic rock guy back in the day with a mix of top 40. But now I am cherry picking the great bands of these 80s genres and putting them front and center on my music rotation. Depeche Mode, Tears for Fears, The Cure, etc.
I love DM.  Thank you, Bill! {#Hearteyes}

This sounds so good today.

Trousers is British (as are DM).  When a Brit says "pants", they are referring to what an American would call underwear.

Or that something is crap, as in 'Depeche Mode are pants'
Clearly that isn't true.

In actual fact, saying something is 'pants' may be an Americanism, it's hard to tell these days, over here in the 51st state.

This album lacks the dynamic emotion and atmosphere of DM's previous 'Black Celebration'. I took the this title as the moniker after this album.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVE!!!
Still golden....
DM recorded Music for the Masses in the Puk studio outside Randers, Denmark back in 87. Went to their concert that fall in Copenhagen.

Nitzer Ebb did the warm up..... my hearing did not recover until late afternoon the following day.

Just after writing that, I had a look on the song meanings link, and found the following possibly insightful post:

this is just a shot in the dark, but this song was written in the 80s when DM were heavy into the whole drug scene. i think that "he" may be the drug itself, and Gahan is saying how euphoric it is to be having this experience

(Anyone know why the feck the 'quote' in the HTML editor isn't working? )

Also keep in mind that it was usually Gore who wrote the lyrics. I always thought that Gore was probably hetero (and deeply kinky, if "Master and Servant" is any indicator), given that he had a rather long common law relationship with a woman. Apparently, though, the boys have started making out together onstage at concerts. Whether that's outright closet-vacating, some much-delayed bi-curiosity or a cynical play to gain a younger listenership will have to be left as an exercise to the reader.

And I've heard from other (not at all reliable) sources that "he" in the case of this song is heroin.

I'm glad I worked like a crazed dog during the '80's. Those 14 hour days caused me to miss most of the music.

I was just musing on the same thing. Bill's penchant for '80s British synth pop (well, okay The Clash wasn't pop much less the synth variety) keeps things interesting. What we need is Flock of Seagulls and Mike Store's runaway hair. {#Lol}
This has made me irrationally happy.

Wow, you must play Poe-Control before this track fairly frequently, because as Control came to a close, I heard the start of Never Let Me Down Again in my head before it actually started on Radio Paradise.  Just struck me as pretty funny & I had to comment!

Brings me right back to being 15, walking to school in my doc martins, donning my pink hair. Ha!
