Jump into the night
Gas up and downshift
Cruise up the coast
On the FM drift
It's a crazy world
On the head of a pin

Some other time
Some other star
I might've cried but now
You only need to look so far
As the smile on my face
To see the shape I'm in

Try love in a bottle
Try love in a box
Play it all night long
Dance 'til you drop
And it sure got soul
It's not flesh and blood

I tried looking for love
But I guess it's true
You don't look for love
It's gonna look for you
Well you found me, honey
And you sound so good

You're the object
Of my affection
Not a dream
Or make believe
You're the object
Of my affection
Come to me

Now we see the women
In the photograph
Sweet Anne of mercy
And Sylvia Plath
For a thousand words
They got a life sentence

If we lined up all the girls
Who died in vain
We could walk on their heads
To hell and back again
But I got the big book
And antidepressants

You're the object
Of my affection
Not a phantom fantasy
You're the object
Of my affection
Come to me

You're the object
Of my affection
Not a toy with batteries
You're the object
Of my affection
Not a rescue remedy
You're the object
Of my affection
Come to me

Does anyone else hear Faith by George Michael in this?

it's got that same catchy hook!

Shawn is great live. Though she seemed sort of depressed the last time I saw her about 5 years ago. Her music was still great but I sure hope she is happier now.

She opened for Jason Isbell in Santa Barbara a month or so ago. She was good. She talked a bit too much in between songs, so we only got to hear four songs.
Was there really a 15-year break between plays of this song, lol (according to the gap in comments, anyway)? Otherwise there's a lot of Shawn in the playlist, thankfully. But, gosh, to be kept waiting so long in the meantime to discover this one.

It's fat alright.
Grossly underrated this side of the pond. Always sincere Help her smile
i guess her last lover had "batteries"
Okay, Shawn... here I come.
Makes me feel like I'm at the dentists office.
This song has some nice parts, but overall is kind of bland. I think Shawn Colvin is a very talented singer but she needs stronger material and/or a producer willing to push her into new territory. She\'s nailed the Joni Mitchell-lite middle of the road thing. Time to move on or, as Shawn might say, get out of this house.
The more I hear her (recorded or live) the more she grates on me. Same damn sound/inflection on every song.
All the comments are about Shawn. Yes, she's cool. But the real story here is-listen to the background music. It's the subdudes. Especially that "drumming" that can be none other than Steve Amadee playing the tambourine. I REALL REALLY miss the subdudes, one of the world's alltime great live bands. I hear they've reformed as The Dudes. Okay-I just checked their website, and they've reverted to the subdudes name. Can't keep up with these guys...
Except for that cool steel guitar lick, the rest of the song pretty much sucks....
How come people manage to post their comments so quick Before the song has got going

I can vouch for the accuracy of your impression - at least from my perspective. Met her around that time and she was seemed very unhappy. It was a bit surprising given expectations I had - whether fair or not - based on her music. I later learned it was around that time that she was having marriage problems which culminated in divorce. It seems she is doing better these days.
This woman has a beautiful voice, great range, and knows how to use inflection. More Shawn!!!

Ditto, I saw Shawn quite a few years ago at a small theatre here. Great show. The opening act was a guy by the name of Vance Gilbert. I enjoyed Vance a lot. Has anyone ever heard of him. Another talented and somewhat unknown, at least in these parts ...
