I don't know what the world may need
But I'm sure as hell that it starts with me
And that's a wisdom
I've laughed at

I don't know what the world may want
But a good stiff drink it surely don't
So I think I'll go and fix myself a tall one

'Cause what the world needs now
Is a new kind of tension
'Cause the old one just bores me to death

'Cause what the world needs now
Is another folk singer
Like I need a hole in my head

I don't know what the world may need
But a V8 engine's a good start for me
Think I'll drive and find a place
To be surly

I don't know what the world may want
But some words of wisdom could comfort us
Think I'll leave that up to
Someone wiser

'Cause what the world needs now
Are some true words of wisdom
Like la la la la la la la la-la

'Cause what the world needs now
Is another folk singer
Like I need a hole in my head

I don't know what the world may need
And I never grasped your complexities
I'd be happy just to get
Your attention

And I don't know what the world may want
But your long sweet body lying next to mine
Could certainly
Raise my spirits

'Cause what the world needs now
Is a new Frank Sinatra
So I can get you in bed

'Cause what the world needs now
Is another folk singer
Like I need a hole in my head

What the world needs now
What the world needs now
Is a new Frank Sinatra so I can get you in bed

What the world needs now
What the world needs now
Is another folk singer like I need a hole in my head

I always hope that a guy like Chris Stapleton or Tyler Childers will cover this.
7? What's the world coming to!

Labour Day weekend 2008. Came home late Saturday night to find my cat dying. Emergency vet cost me $400 to have him put down. Once back home again I smoked big bowl, and went out to ride my bike for hours through the streets of a still-new-to-me town, crying and just feeling like shit. At one point I stopped and looked through a FREE box of left over garage sale rejects. Only thing that caught my eye was a copy of Cracker's 'Garage D'Or' greatest hits collection. I'd never heard of them, but it seemed a fitting title to grab on a "what the hell?" whim. Great album as this song attests. Fun, wry, good guitar grinds. One good thing from an otherwise absolutely shit night.

My dearly-departed Dad and I were in the same situation with the family cat about the same era. Gloom and empathy abounded, but my Dad had seen a lot of hard times. He knew how to lighten some of the darkest moments. After spending time with Max the cat in a crowded waiting room, it was finally our turn. When quoted the $400 fee, my Dad exclaimed in his booming voice "$400!? For that price I could have my aunt put down!"
Their best album IMHO
this really, deally rocks

before I die, I gotta  see these guys in concert

Back in the early 2000s I showed up to a small bar near Charleston South Carolina where Cracker was scheduled to play. My friend and I were playing pool when David walked up and asked if he could join us. For the next 30 minutes whe share some beers and have great conversations about random things. You are correct - his sarcasm is spot on. He uses the sarcasm to be funny and rarely does he take himself seriously. A great guy - and certainly a talented songwriter and musician.

Dude, so who won at pool?
Ok. Just went to “10”!!!!

For some reason I thought this was a hard rocking Tom Petty song.

Also shame on Wikipedia... "What The World Needs Now" goes to a 1965 Burt Bacharach song, and "Teen Angst" goes to a 1996 Placebo song.  I finally found the song page but it doesn't say anything about it being a cover.

No resemblance in style or content to any Burt Bacharach song.  A soft pop-and-strings "What the world needs now is love sweet love" has no d.n.a in common with

Raise my spirits

Awesome sentiments! and tune!

Wiki says 1992! I thought so!

Good Tune!
If you like this, check out their song, "Friends." Fun and funny! More importantly, if you ever get the chance, see Cracker live! New Year's Eve 2012 > 13, Under The Dove in Denver, one hell of a show! made even better when Johnny Hickman, guitar god himself, came over, bought me a drink, introduced me to his lady, talked about his place up near Loveland, and made me an even bigger fan than I already was. He even sent me several wry, playful notes, too. Love Cracker
Text is a ten hands down!
This world is making me surly all the time...no need to find a place anymore....

Play it, Johnny!  Most under-rated guitarist around. Go see these guys.
Är det en surströmning på omslåget?
great lyrics - one of the great 90's bands
7 -> 8 as I'm liking the message - even tho I'm a long way away from my teen years

except Today it is Hipster Band instead of Folk Singer.
Johnny Hickman is a very talented guitarist and has a strong stage presence when Cracker performs live... went to see these guys on a whim at Winery in Atlanta a couple of years ago and they put on one hell of a show!
10. No Brainer.
Another driving down the highway song ! ROCKS !
Never would have thought I would hear the Mano Negra on Radio Paradise !
This is the best 90s song.
SMOKIN'!

They did the very same thing just now.....
Frickin Absolutely Awesome.
Saw these guys in Winnipeg.
Rock at its finest!
Why does this remind me of some Irish band?  Teenage Kicks - The Undertones?
I still think Cracker, Spoon and Cake, back to back, would be my best decadent treat.  Please try to abide my wishes.
David Lowry's sarcasm is great!{#Lol}
90's Flashback!!!! {#Dancingbanana_2} Yeeeehaaaa!
A great rocker track and my favorite Cracker tune.  Typical David Lowery wry humor.
This may be the best 1990's song
God I love this.

This was the song that made me a lifelong fan!

Poetic RP transition from Robert Plant's 29 Palms.

Loved this album back in the day — still listen to it once in a great while.

Excellento.
