All the love you stole
All the love you sought
Exposing you
I am torn

Dark spell, I crave you so
I wanna live, but you just won't let me go

We laid there in starlight
Woke-up in the storm
Am I yours?
I'm not sure

Dark spell, you cast me so
I wanna live, but you just won't leave me alone

And the wheel keeps turning
I can't get enough
And the flame keeps burning
And I surrender love

They say the eyes are like
Windows to the soul
I ain't so sure
I see through yours

My borders are broken raw
I just can't protect, can't protect them no more

And the wheel keeps turning
I can't get enough
And the flame keeps burning
And I surrender love

Turn your back on another world
Promise yourself "never again"

The wheel keeps turning
But I can't get enough
And the sun keeps burning
And I surrender love

isn't this a blondie song?
While I like the vocals on the Kingdom of Rust album well enough, I much prefer the instrumental version as a whole and wish more bands/artists would do that kind of 'double' album.

I know Morcheeba did with Charango (instrumentals far superior to vocal versions) and Mike Oldfield with Man on the Rocks (both good, IMO).

Any other suggestions out there?
I like the bassline too. In seperation it reminds me of "Catembe" from Miles Davis's "Amandla" album.
Glad I'm drinking whiskey tonight. Fits right in.

100% agreed!  I've always been fascinated by how simple a "rock" instrument the bass guitar is and yet, in the hands of a great musician, that simple bass does so much for a song; keeping rhythm and vibe, completeness of the full frequency spectrum, and possibly less obvious, adding suspense and emphasis to certain sections of a song.

And after reading his Wiki page, I'm a bit impressed by Jimi Goodwin; he sings, plays guitar (and even the drums) in addition to bass, and as a lefty, he plays his bass strung for a righty and flipped upside down.  Pretty friggin cool!  I'm upping my 7 to an 8 now.

That BASS!
Isn't this Blondie's Rapture?
Loving the bass line.
A random excellent hit on a PSD. Digging it much for a nice thursday night while being stuck on a project! {#Music} {#Cheers}
Am I hearing a little Blondie here? Cool tune though!
Hypnotic, gets you hooked and keeps you there, wonderful...

"Takes a second to say goodbye, say goodbye..."

I´ve never heard this song before ....what a nice surprise !
After 12+ years of listening (yikes!), still my favorite group that RP has turned me on to.
they split up? damn. awfully great song and album.

Great start for Monday Morning

I think its wondawful! Doves make some really great music; though I can see  where it may be an acquired taste (or maybe not even that).
This song is simply awful
Very nice song!

And the seamless segue again today!  love BG and RP!

The DOVES are disco?

Woow - you have incredible insight!
Very-very-very-very UNDERRATED band!

VERY-VERY!
This is giving me an ear worm. The bass line seems to echo a tune from some '70s or '80s chestnut.  Driving me batty to connect them.
Yeah this dark spell spinny disco ball tune sounds like something they just have been wanted to play with in the studio for a while ... So they went for it ... Good spooky fun. I still like other tracks from the album as well, hey and speaking of spooky rest of albums, I like the rest of modern vampires of the city, by vampire weekend ... A lot ... like doves.
 misterbearbaby wrote:

Somebody nailed it before- it's Blondie "Rapture"- the intro lick is note-for-note... Still, decent.

The first five notes of this song's vocal melody sound very much like those of like "Rapture".  The instrumental intro (or "lick") in this song doesn't really sound like that of like prior song, certainly not "note-for-note".

Is The Cure echoing in the background there?
I feel the sudden compulsion to HIT.THE.PSD.BUTTON.
I really like this. Don't even know why. Perhaps the primal bass.
 DoctorHooey wrote:

It's the drums. The 16th note hi-hat especially, and the way he plays with opening and closing the cymbals. At least, that's where I'm hearing it.

Yes, agreed....it's the drumming that creates a disco beat.  You hear it very clearly at the beginning of the song...

Disco Sarah = potential band name (but twists your meaning significantly).
Love this!!{#Heartkiss}
Terrific bassline !
Not up there with the quality of other Doves tracks I have heard here.

trying to figure out if that is before the soft rock Bob era.
I can't figure out what they're singing in the chorus, so I'll just assume they meant
"I'm a maaaaaan, yes I aaaaaaam and I can't help but love you so"
The opening notes had me thinking this was a cover of Blondie's "Rapture."

Edit: I see others have noticed the similarity as well. Such smart listeners {#Angel}

Knee jerk beat, great tune, a little Verve comes through, all the better. ..

I loves The Doves when they write catchy pop songs
Strange, I was just listening to Doves' last year's best-of compilation and decided to check what's on at RP. O_O

I love the bass line on this.

Good song.  I'll have to give their other stuff a closer listen.
Nice segue from Hendrix's Voodoo Chile - the bass line, I guess?

I LIKE

I hear some of Better Than Ezra's "One More Murder" ...

..in the drums/bass line I hear Warren Zevon's "Nighttime In The Switching Yard"

Just logged on to make the same comment - doh!

Oddly enough, I sprained my "sacroiliac" last month ( it still hurts) and I knew that some old song had that word in the lyrics but I couldn't remember it. Hearing this track by the Doves made me think of that Blondie tune and, voila, these lyrics;

"Back to back
Sacroiliac
Spineless movement
And a wild attack"

Serendipitous.

Those mushy vocals just made me {#Puke}.

Much love for this!!

Rub a dub Doves. Luv it. And clever Blonde comparison! Still an outstanding song. Would love to hear the Clash covering this.

I couldn't agree with you more, Tim!  I too hadn't been exposed to them prior to RP.  good stuff!

Confusing at first because there's another alt band called "The Doves". I haven't seen anything from them in years though. At first I thought maybe they were the same band having a comeback, but alas they are not.

Bunk! This is the same group that issued The Last Broadcast.

Interesting...I'm going to have to check this out further.{#Cool}

Each time I hear this I think it could be a new U2 song (unfortunately, U2 dont seem to be this good anymore).
Mellow I like. And LUV my iPhone app!!!!
Perfect transition from Sweet Jane.. carried it right on through.

Does anyone else hear a little 'Clash' in this track, like icing on a cake?
This album is growing on me.  I bought and liked their first album, saw them live for that tour, but I found their next two albums just a bit too repetitive and not that interesting or very different from the first.  I had honestly kinda given up on them.  This album however...
