Earnest to the point of pretentiousness... hard for me to feel the pain U2 is trying to elicit. I applaud the intent, but unless they're living the pain or providing all their earnings to relieve it, they're just making money off of the suffering of others. Callous... perhaps... or not. Get back to the hard edge voice and the riffs that made U2 who they are (were).
Did he just rhyme cigarette with minaret? Morrison just rolled over in his grave.

I think "zooropa" and "achtung, baby" were good efforts.

everything after that has been 100% pure derivative drivel and monumentally disappointing.

"All that you can't leave behind" was particularly awful.

I can't work out if i find this more or less pretentious than their usual stuff but i guess it kind of suits them.  I quite like it.
Bono doing spoken word. interesting. sort of...

Sure it's art alright. Bad art from usually-good artists. And I'll treat it as such. Thanks.

ditto x 5 (funny how so many of their previous fans are now just that) {#Exclaim}

Maybe this album is responsible for killing it.

Yeh, they need to move more towards jazz................................

usually i like U2, but i kept thinking, "this guy is really into himself"
I gotta listen to this "album" and give it a shot...
Awww, crap, I always get suckered into thinking this is Harold Budd. Then Bono comes in.  Not bad for a U2 song, though. Oh well, time to hit the iPod for the Budd..

Great song with great lyrics.

You phillistines gotta let this band grow as they will... not the way you want them to. This is art. Treat it as such.

OMG, Bono's not screaming.  What a great tune!  8

Agreed.  I'm not completely wild about it, but it's an interesting new direction for a band that . . . well . . . could use one, maybe.  I kinda like it.

Omg Bono noT screaming? still what an aweful tune ;p

There's something very fresh to this song when you've heard a lot of U2...
i think this is the only u2 song i like
Can't wait to see them in OCT!
I Like most U2 songs. This isn't a song. Ugh.

That would be "Against the Sky" from The Pearl.  I recognized it immediately as my high school literature teacher used to play that album in class... and I've owned it ever since.

That answered my question!

Well. This album sure came and went fast, huh?

Those first few free-form bars of the tune bear a very strong resemblance to a cut from one of the Eno/Budd collaborations - from either Ambient #2 or The Pearl.

Moody, atmospheric . . . I like it.

The intro is all eno.

RP: why not just play eno?

U2 usually doesn't do it for me, but this is all right so far.  6.

This song keeps growing on me with every listen. It will be a 10 very soon, I think.
POS.
Really enjoying the new album.  Their best effort since Achtung, in my opinion.
Cedars of Lebanon is one of the songs on No Line on the Horizon that Bono wrote about a character, in this case a war correspondent. It's a shift in songwriting for him.

I like this better than the other song I've heard off this album.  There is the feeling of something poised, of impending violence that threatens but never materializes.
Nice cover photo.
