Wire fences still coiled with flowers of the night
Songs of the birds like hands call the earth to witness
Sever from fear before taking flight.

Fences that fail and fall to the ground
Bearing the fruit from Jara's Hands

Me siento solo y perdido
Una vela alumbra mi camino
Cruzando tierras que nunca he visto
Cruzando el río de mi destino
Solo soy un chico mas
Que sueña en alto y mirando al mar

Great tune!
This band so so cool
This remains to me so far their best album but they all range between 7/10 and 10/10. Their music is just amazing ! perfect mix of rock and that trumpet ! <3
Yes! Please more!!

They are fantastic. Heard them do a two hour set for $24 at the Opera House in TO last year. Haha NINE players!! Great people, great music!

Calexico can do little wrong, IMHO, and much right. Of course, I'm basing on Bill & Rebecca's astute curation, but allowing for that…
One of the few bands on my bucket list.

The USA has it's own.  Everything you say and do online and over the phone is recorded and saved.  Your democracy is owned by corporations.
How many American patriots are here! Fascism is always infinite. Look at your ass and let be free the rest of the country. North America is the most genocide system since the Cristians VS Arabs war and the Santa Inquisición promoted by the Catholic Church. Bad news for all of you, the world is changing! And American people are not now the example of an ideal life, fortunatelly!

Spectacular blow back against an American domestic target remains a good possibility as long as Israeli settlers pour into the West Bank and Israel tries to nudge Arabs out of illegally annexed East Jerusalem.

What worries me most is the mass hysterical hyper vigilant reaction that would once again inevitably follow such an attack.

Why is it, then, that most Arabs would prefer to live and work in Israel?

Nope. Middle eastern terrorism was created by the Soviet Union in the 1960s as a way to sabotage the source of oil to the West. Any interventions the US did - backed by Republicans and generally fought by Democrats (granted, the Carter doctrine was a notable exception) - were to keep the Soviets out of the middle east.

Airline hijacking was devised by a KGB major general in 1962. Saddam Hussein, in 1973, signed a secret agreement with the Soviet Union to give handling of all his military and intelligence operations to the USSR.

Crazy how much you don't know, isn't it..
Anybody bother to look up who Jara actually was?

He was a silly, thespian Marxist who backed Allende, who was backed by the Soviet Union. Anyone here ever bothered to ask most Chileans today if they would have preferred to end up like the Ukraine rather than become Latin America's sole economic powerhouse? I didn't think so.

Maybe it's best not to listen to music produced by childish, uneducated semi literates...

Easy to overlook the horn arrangement on this one, especially in the chorus. The trumpets chime into the chord one horn at a time. Very subtle and very cool.

"thought policing"? Really? The prisons are filled with the impure of thought? Please. Good grief. The chief consequence of PC is to piss off right wing loons.
"Moral high-ground when it comes to free speech"?"After 9/11 for a bit"? BWaahahahaha. Republican governance has achieved full-blown insanity, the apex of 30-plus years of anti-government, anti-science, anti-human, anti-democratic destruction, all for the sake of ultra-rich plutocrats. "Free speech" ceases to have meaning now that the bought & paid for Supremes have determined that corporations have rights and money is speech.

Most of my family made it out of Cuba after Fidel's croanies took possession of all their property and rights. Many cubans have lived a broken and half life after their homes and families were ripped apart - including my own mother's. My uncle Manuelo was anti-Batista and a lawyer that represented the revolucion and Fidel. However, once he saw what Fidel was up to he started working politically against his authoritarian regime. Fidel thanked him by throwing him in prison for ~20 years. He made out when Fidel emptied the prisons in 1980 (which besides political prisoners sent a wonderful lot of rapists and murders to Miami).

Ergo, you are an idiot or at best extremely ignorant and don't know what you are talking about. Why don't you keep your politics out of an otherwise awesome forum. I suggest all of those that truly believe in these ideals move to Venezuala, North Korea or any other suppressed society and then get back to me on how awesome your life is. Oh wait, you won't have internet access or the ability to think and express free thoughts, so.... nevermind.

Yep. Che loved his executions so much he had a window installed so he could enjoy the views. Also I was told he clubbed a 14 yr old to death himself for the crime if having parents who own some kind of store or line of stores. Known several folks who escaped tyranny in various places (one Soviet, two Vietnamese, and a couple of Cubans. I also have family who live in the Czech Rep. None died but it was a close thing I'm told). They really are let down by the buffoons who lionize the scum.

Ironically those who seem most supportive of these foul scums are also the first to be "cleansed" when the thugs look to solidify their power.
What a great band!

It's odd: while I enjoy the tunes on this album, something about that cover bugs me - the image itself is cool - (as are the typefaces), but its execution is a little too sterile and computer-generated-looking to me.  Maybe it started out as a drawing, but then lost something significant.  Well, just my opinion. Good tune.

VICTOR JARA THE POET by ~caupolican
Patricio Reyes ©2007-2010 ~caupolican

VICTOR JARA was murdered in CHILE 1970'S
BY AGUSTO PINOCHET AND THE C.I.A.Víctor Lidio Jara Martínez (September 28, 1932 - September 15, 1973) was a Chilean pedagogue, theatre director, poet, singer-songwriter, and political activist. A distinguished theatre director, he devoted himself to the development of Chilean theatre, directing a broad array of works from locally produced Chilean plays, to the classics of the world stage, to the experimental work of Ann Jellicoe. Simultaneously he developed in the field of music and played a pivotal role among neo-folkloric artists who established the Nueva Canción Chilena (New Chilean Song) movement which led to a revolution in the popular music of his country under the Salvador Allende government. Shortly after the U.S. backed September 11, 1973 Chilean coup he was arrested, tortured and ultimately machine gunned to death - his body was later thrown out into the street of a shanty town in Santiago. The contrast between the themes of his songs, on love, peace and social justice and the brutal way in which he was murdered transformed Jara into a symbol of struggle for human rights and justice across Latin America.

Inti-Illimani Quilapayún - "El Aparecido" Live:

Abre sendas por los cerros,
Deja su huella en el viento,
El águila le da el vuelo
Y lo cobija el silencio.

Nunca se quejó del frío,
Nunca se quejó del sueño,
El pobre siente su paso
Y lo sigue como ciego.

Correlé, correlé, correlá
Por aquí, por allí, por allá,
Correlé, correlé, correlá,
Correlé que te van a matar,
Correlé, correlé, correlá.

Su cabeza es rematada
Por cuervos con garra de oro
Como lo ha crucificado
La furia del poderoso.

Hijo de la rebeldía
Lo siguen veinte más veinte,
Porque regala su vida
Ellos le quieren dar muerte.

Thanks for the info about Mr Victor Jara. Knowing the background makes a great song even better.

It's an American thing, especially along the parts that border Mexico.  This album
is brillant by the way.

Wow, must be a Europe thing.  I don't meet many people in the states that have even heard of them.

I have certainly heard of them (here at RP of course)  and I disagree - I think they are absolutely brilliant.

I've got to get me some Colexico.  Really digging their music.

Think of Calexico as a guided tour along the Border, San Diego to El Paso.  Then your decents will turn to brilliants.

Agreed. I bought this last week and its pretty close to my favorite as well. Well worth buying.

 Wire fences still coiled with flowers of the night
Songs of the birds like hands call the earth to witness
Sever from fear before taking flight.
Fences that fail and fall to the ground
Bearing the fruit from Jara's Hands
Me siento solo y perdido
Una vela alumbra mi camino
Cruzando tierras que nunca he visto
Cruzando ei rio de mi destino
Solo soy un chico mas
Que sueha en alto y mirando al mar
All alone and lost
My path is lit by flame
Crossing lands never seen
Crossing rivers of my destiny
Only a boy nothing more
Day dreaming wanting more

A great song off of my most favorite album of 2008...thx for playing it!!

Víctor Lidio Jara Martínez (September 28, 1932 – September 15, 1973) was a Chilean pedagogue, theatre director, poet, singer-songwriter, and political activist, was murdered in Chile 1970's by the US-supported Chilean military; Vitor Jara was repeatedly beaten and tortured; the bones in his hands were broken as were his ribs; Fellow political prisoners have testified that his captors mockingly suggested that he play guitar for them as he lay on the ground; he developed in the field of music and played a pivotal role among neo-folkloric artists who established the Nueva Canción Chilena (New Chilean Song) movement which led to a revolution in the popular music of his country under the Salvador Allende government; The contrast between the themes of his songs, on love, peace and social justice and the brutal way in which he was murdered transformed Jara into a symbol of struggle for human rights and justice across Latin América;

American folksinger Phil Ochs, who met and performed with Vitor Jara during a tour of South America, organized a benefit concert in his memory in New York in 1974. Titled "An Evening With Salvador Allende", the concert featured Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie and Ochs;

The Soviet musician Alexander Gradsky created the rock opera Stadium (СтаЎОПМ, Stadion) in 1985 based on the events surrounding Jara's death;

In the late 1990s British actress Ms. Emma Thompson started to work on a screenplay, which she planned to use as the basis for a movie about Victor Jara; the movie would feature Antonio Banderas – another fan of Victor Jara – as Jara himself where he would sing some of his songs and Emma Thompson as Victor Jara's British wife Joan Jara;

Portuguese folk band called Brigada Victor Jara is named after him;

The Southwestern American band Calexico open their 2008 album Carried to Dust with the song "Victor Jara's Hands".

In memory of Mr. Víctor Lidio Jara Martínez.

Víctor Jara was a chilean musician, singer and poet. In 1973 he was tortured and beated till his hands were broken by military forces of Augusto  Pinochet . After this "Veamos si ahora puedes tocar la guitarra" said one of his torturers. A few days later he was killed.
