I won't take all that they hand me down
And make out I smile, though I wear a frown
And I'm not gonna take it all lying down
'Cause once I get started, I go to town

'Cause I'm not like everybody else
I'm not like everybody else
I'm not like everybody else
I'm not like everybody else

And I don't want to ball about like everybody else
And I don't want to live my life like everybody else
And I won't say that I feel fine like everybody else
'Cause I'm not like everybody else
I'm not like everybody else

But darling, you know that I love you true
And do anything that you want me to
Confess all my sins like you want me to
There's one thing that I will say to you
I'm not like everybody else
I'm not like everybody else

I'm not like everybody else
I'm not like everybody else
And I don't want to ball about like everybody else
And I don't want to live my life like everybody else
And I won't say that I feel fine like everybody else
'Cause I'm not like everybody else
I'm not like everybody else

Like everybody else
Like everybody else
Like everybody else
Like everybody else

If you all want me to settle down
Slow up and stop all my running 'round
Do everything like you want me to
There's one thing that I will say to you
I'm not like everybody else
I'm not like everybody else

I'm not like everybody else
I'm not like everybody else
And I don't want to ball about like everybody else
And I don't want to live my life like everybody else
And I won't say that I feel fine like everybody else
'Cause I'm not like everybody else
I'm not like everybody else

Like everybody else (like everybody else)
Like everybody else (like everybody else)
Like everybody else (like everybody else)
Like everybody else

Thousands of people singing "I'm not like everybody else". The irony.

Reminds me of a classic scene in The Life Of Brian

This entire album is terrific.
"Hey, let's be sure EVERYBODY ON EARTH can hear my snare, right?"
Very great live version! Amazing Kinks!
Wow! {#Notworthy}

Fighting? Oh yes.
As Ray says "Once I get started, I go to town"  with his brother Dave in famous circumstances, which pretty well did away with the Kink's chances of staying in the same league as the Stones and even the Beatles.

Breakthrough for the Davies. True rock'n roll, and an icon of a song for an icon of a band.   {#Notworthy}.

Decent mid-90's live version of a (then) 30 year-old song.  I always thought it was cool when David Chase used the original to close out an episode of  "The Sopranos".

I was just thinking about that.
Nice live version. Dave's guitar and background vocals are really great, as usual.
Pure 10! ;)

Who is doing all the "rating" I keep seeing referenced here? Substitute "esteemed" or "admired" or something that does not sound like an advertising agency thought it up. Just a thought.
Raw and wonderful.  I could listen to that guitar all day...
if it was written by Michael Stipe it would go: "I'm almost not unlike nobody else"...

Anyone hear the influence in Vic Chestnut's music?

Not really.  I think Chestnut was great.

Ok, my opinion is the exact opposite.  Most over-rated band ever. Hey, you asked.

I'm a unique individual. Just like everybody else........

No one is like anybody else--no matter how hard they try.
9 !!!
I am...for sure not like anybody else. Ask my bosses.
I'm not convinced.
A poor version of an OK song by one of the most overrated bands in history. All this adds up to a 2.
Is it like today?
Great Tune.
Camper Van Beethoven does a very respectable version as well.
SO-much different from their first release.... Teen awareness of being clever and wonderful then are now angry and refusing to compromise based on experience... Very-good...

I saw the Kinks one time... They almost got in a fight with Bill Graham before they came on. Almost literally fighting. That show was pretty awesome.

{#Whisper}We'll have to ask BillG if he's willing to share !

The soundtrack of the whole series is awesome, anyway. (As is the series itself.)

Hmmm the Pretenders followed by the Kinks...I wonder what the connection is?
Wow, I can't believe this is out of print!  The Kinks must be one of the most ill-served bands in history by their various record labels.

Which episode? I don't remember hearing this song.

Two from Chrissie's band, one from her one-time man Ray's band.  What's next - gotta be Jim Kerr and Simple Minds.

I wish their damn record label would finally rerelease this. It's only available as an expensive, out of print collectors item. Or at least get me this damn song as an MP3. Please!

I thinks people like this. The ratings show a really nice Gaussian distribution centered on 8. Well, there are a few outliers as we demonstrate that RP has its share of people with excessive earwax.

{#Roflol} Me thinks people in glass houses should not throw stones.
Can I send you some Q-Tips??

Wow that little Pretenders>Pretenders>Kinks run was nice.  Chrissie & Ray were a couple (had a child together).  I remember how sad it was Chrissie's guitarists ODed.  I always reckoned that "Something Better" was written by Ray for Chrissie.  Big fan of both bands.
What's the deal with the licensing on this song?  I cannot legally buy the download on itunes or anywhere else.

Sounds sincere enough, but come on.  You're really not like everybody else?  I don't believe it.

Great song!  I prefer the original — but this has the years of wear and tear and the road behind it...

When this first started playing, I wasn't sure whether I liked it or not. I thought it was missing some of the urgency and rawness of the studio version. But I listened to the entire song, and it really grew on me. It's an amazing live performance. Good stuff. 8.
I'm liking this! IMHO - The coarseness of his voice adds an air of anti-establishment/protest credibility to the song. Sounds less polished and more sincere than the studio version.

Play it again Bill.....
Top 10 :guitarist:
10. Incomparable, indeed. Majestic guitar, truly fabulous band!
Watched Ray Davies on the BBC Proms concert last night -- what a great gig!

Just listening to the instrumentals, I would never have guessed that this was the Kinks. Great song.
Dave Davies is one of Rock's most underrated guitarists in history. While Ray gets full credit for writing unquestionably great songs, Dave gave the band its signature sound of great hooks and hard charging rock sound. As is apparent here, he could solo with the best of them.

I love this version. My first "add" without going throught weeks of the "LRC" process.
I love the message too...
