I looked into your eyes
they told me plenty
I already knew.

You never felt a thing
so soon forgotten
all that you do
is more than words
I tried to tell you
the more I tried I failed

I would not let myself believe that you might stray
and I would stand by you no matter what they'd say.
I thought I'd be with you until my dying day.

Until my dying day.

I used to think my life
was often empty
a lonely space to fill

you hurt me more than I ever could have imagined.
You made my world stand still
and in that stillness
there was a freedom I never felt before.

I would not let myself believe that you might stray
and I would stand by you no matter what they'd say.
I thought I'd be with you until my dying
day.

Until my dying day.

9–>10!
This sounds a bit like a mashup of "Sweet Surrender" and Paula Cole's "Cowboys" song.  Seeing as this is 1993 maybe this is what pop music was ultimately working towards for 1997.
From my hometown originally. In addition to all else a very nice person1
Great transition into this song from London Grammar's Truth is a Beautiful Thing. Thanks Bill!
She sure is and from my hometown too!
The entire album is fantastic! AND she's Canadian
Any opinions on Shine On?
Sarah - great Canadian content 10!
nice groove

There was an excellent 2 part episode featuring some tasty Sarah tunes.

Evidently a Canadian professional hockey player, although I can't find any connection between the two.

Blimey, Mr & Mrs G.  You're on a roll today.  It's twenty five to one on a Friday morning where you are, but we're a while behind you on the curve.  I can't imagine a more impressive collection of tunes to start my working day.  Thanks from the bottom of my heart.  A little donation on its way xxx
Stumbled across McLachlan by accident, years before she was a 'star'. "Solace" album, 1991... is what did it for me.

I don't understand what mainstream has to do with it.  Either you like it or you don't

I wanna jump in there and start singing "Where have all the Cowboys Gone".  Anyone else hear that?  I thought she ripped off Paula Cole but I see she put this out in '93 while Cole did her's in 96.  More appreciation for Sarah there.
She may have the most beautiful voice in the world.

I would say the next album, Surfacing, was equally good (or very close) but she hasn't matched those gems since.
Beautiful

Sarah mainstream?!  Oh Canada...  If only that were the case down here.

Haven't read through all comments - but my very first thought was: this sounds like Talk Talk, even her phrasing is close to Mark Hollis'... That impression obviously faded as the song progressed, but still - did anyone else feel this?

By the way, just bumped this up to 7 - the first time I gave it a 6 but wasn't really listening. I like her.
10.
There's no other score I can give Sarah, ever.  How did she learn all this about love so soon?  I'm still trying to figure it all out.

Such a a haunting melody...............

I've deliberately ignored Sarah all these years, cuz she was too 'mainstream', but this song has some exquisite hooks.

Awesome tune, great album, fantastic artist. Thanks for all the great music Rebecca & Bill!
Dang, a set with Poe and Sarah. Two of my favorite female artists. Making this Friday go by a lot quicker!

I saw her four times for free and once, for a charity event with Bare Naked Ladies for about a hundred Canadian a ticket, but she worked bloody hard for her success. Love her voice...have to put her at fourth these days, but still top of the heap and way better than a million others, so no worries...Go Canada...Go Sarah!

She dumped her hubbie.

That's got to be Paula Cole singing in the background - haven't been able to find any info on that, though. Anyone have the liner notes?

Sexy Sarah!

I'f I'd shmoozed with Sarah I bet I'd take her over Margo too!  {#Tongue}
With this song, she could take over for Margo Timmins.

I did like her CD when it came out then ... and really enjoyed all of it ... she has a very sensual voice ... {#Cheers}

I'd suggest something from the Downward Spiral CD. But Hurt could work too.
She has an addicting voice.  Sweet and soft!
If there is such a thing as a phat mellow groove, this is it...

My favorite from her gender. {#Foot-in-mouth}
The background singing sounds like it was sampled from a Joni Mitchell song...

Paula Cole actually opened up for Sarah McLachlan on the "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" tour...  I caught them at the Orpheum Theater in SF back in the early 90's.  Good album.  Good show.

Interesting observation I love both U2 and Sarah's stuff... :D Perhaps they should collaborate
The title got me thinking of some famous movie dialog: Plenty O'Toole: Hi, I'm Plenty. James Bond: But of course you are. Plenty O'Toole: Plenty O'Toole. James Bond: Named after your father perhaps?

Nice advice...
I like her music, but most of the tunes have that annoying snare drum - bam..bam...bamm

It's amazing how a piece of music can transport me - suddenly it's the early 90's and I'm driving my beat up old Mustang through snowy Minnesota winters, listening to this and trying hard to hit the high notes. . .

LOL we thought about Head Like a Hole but wasn't sure what the Polka crowd would do. We might opt for something a bit more mellow from the Fragile I guess...

The last time I saw Sarah she was on a commercial for the ASPCA. Before that it was in a small town concert where she blew me away. I think we're going to cop for the Icecream song at our wedding next year... I know... but it was the only place to fit her in. Now if I can just find the appropriate NIN song for the wedding...
I was walking by a Tower Records when I heard "Ice Cream." I was so enthralled, I bought the CD. I like everything on it. Then I saw Sarah perform live. O.M.G.!

Way on down to bedrock, indeed! And love that voice... YES!
This album is excellent from beginning to end. Her best, hands down.
Lillith ... This got played to death in Canada in the late 90s --- now that it's had a rest it sounds pretty decent. 7.
