This particular song doesn't do Hem justice...check out their 2002 release "Rabbit Songs"...cross reference with Over the Rhine "Good Dog, Bad Dog".

I don't know the FoW version, but it sounds kind of OK. (I keep getting this group confused with JEM, but never REM). This is the "Half-Acre" group right? Got kind of an alt-country feel to it, though I prefer the Tanyas or the Waifs for that.

I don't really like the "Shine on, shine on, shine..." part. It reminds me of "Come on, come on, bla bla bla bla" in that AC/DC song. But, I haven't heard the original version of this. So I'll just hush up now.

I think this is a good interpretation of the song - it makes you look at it a different way. I get a kind of Sam Beam-y vibe from her. Also, I would love to hear Sink to the Bottom - and I think Hey Julie could easily fit into RP's setlist.

While this is REALLY different than the original, I gotta say that this cover really grows on you over time. I actually think it's brilliant - and they perform it beautifully live.

I've never heard the original and did not care for this at all. Something about the woman's lack of vocal depth and the plodding nature of the tune..I blocked it out and then tuned back in, disappointed to find it still playing. Kind of like at the dentist's office when you tune out the drill for a while.

Omigod! I knew I recognized the opening lyrics, but I just couldn't place the song until I looked at the playlist. Still forming my opinion on this cover... I adore the Fountains of Wayne original, and I've loved all the Hem songs I've heard to date. Not sure if they mix well here, though... It would be interesting to hear the reaction of someone who's never heard the Fountains of Wayne version. If you're already familiar with it, I just don't think you can form an unbiased opinion. I can't.
