Summer comes and rain falls away
But the very next day it seems
The snow comes to stay

And you too will go just like the dog days do
I'll put on my hat, my gloves, my scarf
To keep the cold apart

But there are no hats, gloves, scarves for the heart
Just a cold wind that leaves its frosted mark

Don't forget that I will always love you
Just a reminder to help you pave your pathway
Fall it cools, winter it snows,
Spring it rains, summer comes and you go

And in my silly mind I've gotten married to you
You're across town, don't even have a clue
Or these images that in ten years
I'll run into you and fall right back inside of you

Don't forget that I will always love you
Just a reminder to help you pave your pathway
Fall it cools, winter it snows
Spring it rains, summer comes and you go

Don't forget that I will always love you
Just a reminder to help you pave your pathway
Fall it cools and winter snows
Spring it rains, summer comes and you go

So when will we meet next and where will it be?
On a platform track in an old movie
Cause time moves in circles and can leave you anywhere

Fall it cools and in the winter it snows
Spring it rains, summer comes and you go

I love the name Martha.
A very beautiful love song. Sung by her delicate voice.

I saw on the CBC news recently that Martha is doing free Covid-19 concerts from her bacony in Montreal. Neighbors stand in the street-keeping their distance from one another-or listen from their homes and apartments. That'd be pretty cool!

I like bacon.  I would like to visit a bacony.  I imagine that there are several varieties there.  Thin cut, thick cut, maple brown sugar smoked, Canadian, turkey, low sodium, crispy, soggy.  I made some bacon with some pork belly from the store.  Dry brine in salt, brown sugar, and molasses in the fridge for two weeks, then smoke it on the Traeger for about six hours.  Unbelievable.  Like candy.

NICE!  Great voice. Not  normally my type of music, but NICE!  I gave it a 7, maybe revise to 8 later.  Thanx RP!
One of those songs that sends shivers up my spine and makes me nostalgic for something I never experienced
I'm thinking that anyone who grew up around the author of Dead Skunk couldn't possibly end up doing wrong. And she doesn't do me any wrong, at all.

Stated by a boy who hates music, is condescending and simple minded.

About to watch it..... thank you.
This recording seems to have some flanging issues between the left and right channels on Martha's voice during some of the stanzas.  I wonder if that's intentional or is a problem with the mastering.
Martha's own Urge for Going. Not quite Joni's poetry but still pretty goddamned lovely
This song melts my heart every time I hear it.
this tune is killer tonight...could be the Guinness but i have felt this drinking coffee
A beautiful song which never fails to make me pause when it comes on.  The eerie backing vocal (by her brother, Rufus, I believe) adds a perfect touch.
Thank you for playing North of the 49th again Rebecca and Bill. Be well and blessings from The High West.

What about her mother, Kate McGarrigle? And her aunt Anna McGarrigle? That's 5 members of Martha's close family with musical pedigree.
I wonder what happened to the sense of humour in the bloodline? The McGarrigle sister's NaCl is one of the funniest love songs. Then there is her Dad's (Loudon's) Dead Skunk....
One of the most poignant songs about love lost I’ve ever heard.
Tune itself is OK, but the guitar playing is awful. Decent players do not generate "string squeaks."
just upped rating for this thought

I’ve seen Martha and she is talented beyond! Great show.

Here's to this and many other songs keeping your memories of Pamela afloat...RIP Pamela!!
LLRP
Love to hear the echoes of Martha's mother and aunt in this song.

Bumped it to a 8 great song
This to Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons." Brilliant, Bill!
This is so easy on the ears. I just slow down and enjoy.

Outstanding, to my ears.  9 today.  Thanks RP.
All I need to hear is three notes and I slump in my chair.

Same here. Also, her live rendition of Cohen's The Traitor is superb (from "Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man" film, 2005).

For me that's the best song on the album. But perhaps too explicit to play on the radio. On the other hand, we all know at least one BMFA, don't we?
Always reminds me of her superb live rendition of Cohen"s  "Traitor".

Very, very nice.  Puts a smile on my face.
As good or better than Cohen & Co., in my opinion... I'm surprised how good it is, on multiple listens:  her lyrics, her voice, her magic...

Somewhat less strident than her "BMFA"  EP, I'd say.

I wish I could write one great song...this is good. It's genuine!
She must have been 15 when she wrote this timeless ballad, so iconic, so wistful and wise.  oh Martha, you old soul.  <3
I remember hearing she and Rufus performing it when he first started touring, with Martha as 'backup' and opening act on rare occasions.
what a lovely song         {#Yes}
Still love her.
what a gem, just beautiful. thanks bill.
I went to see her a couple of weeks ago at a small venue in Vancouver, she put on a really great show.

Are you saying you don't like Rufus?
Maybe you should tell us what you really think rather than holding it all back.
Seriously though Fred, I think this is the first comment I've seen from you in which you swore.
Wow, WAY better than the average Wainwright song!

Love it, earthy, straightforward  beautiful.
I really like Martha ... everything she sings sounds so genuine

Huge fan of her dad. And now her too. Did Loudon write this one? If not, Martha's songwriting sounds a lot like her dad's, which is a very good thing by me.

Funny Bill would play David Gray right after Martha. His voice is amazingly similar to Loudon's. No coincidence I'm sure, as Bill is the master of the segue.

Would you say the same about Loudon?

This song makes me stop reading my book and listen to the end. Kept it in my car for weeks. Damn it. I want it back in now. Something must be bumped.

It might be for the whole album. Ball & Chain has the F-word and some sexually explicit lyrics. Not to mention the last song Bloody M.F'ing A--hole.
Magical

Not interesting at all...
