It's a god-awful small affair
To the girl with the mousy hair
But her mummy is yelling, "No!"
And her daddy has told her to go
But her friend is nowhere to be seen
Now she walks through her sunken dream
To the seat with the clearest view
And she's hooked to the silver screen
But the film is a saddening bore
For she's lived it ten times or more
She could spit in the eyes of fools
As they ask her to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?

It's on America's tortured brow
That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow
Now the workers have struck for fame
Because Lennon's on sale again
See the mice in their million hordes
From Ibeza to the Norfolk Broads
Rule Britannia is out of bounds
To my mother, my dog, and clowns
But the film is a saddening bore
Because I wrote it ten times or more
It's about to be writ again
As I ask you to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?

A pure 10! Godlike!
Thanks for playing the live versions - brings it and David Bowie back to life!
I am ready to cry, overwhelmed by such genius and amazing music, You Never Give Me/The End by the Beatles and now this!  So wonderful to be able to appreciate  - such magic!

I guess this song will always remind me of the goose bumps on my skin during the spectacular launch of SpaceX Falcon Heavy, watching it live on screen in a bar packed with cheering people

I admit , I have not viewed the play list for Bowie here at RP and I will..

I would suggest both. We are creatures of variety and mood. Always amazed at how I drift away from an artist, rediscover and then say to myself-where did s/he go? Then I remember, it was me, not them. Just waiting to be rediscovered. Praise patience...

After the spectacular lift off of Space X Falcon Heavy yesterday (with part of this song as some theme music), Starman is at the wheel of the Tesla Roadster now zooming through space:

Yesterday, driving through Santa Monica, stopped at the light and a Tesla pulls up next to me and who should it be? Mr. Wonderful aka Life on Mars Elon Musk.

It was a good day.

Good Dreamin day

Can this song grow more beautiful with each passing year?  A yearning teen age heart felt this music and still yearns freshly 50 years later.   Only more more deeply felt.

As a closeted gay man at the time, I share the yearning with Wardleader. "look at those cavemen..." reassuring words when not much else was for me then. But the whole album was stunning-still tear up when I hear Kooks-would have loved to hear my dad say those things. But he did as good as he could.

Yeah, they finally got some headphones and ear-buds up there.  They don't all walk around blasting their boom-boxes anymore.
Absence does make the heart grow fonder.
Bill, would "She's Leaving Home" by The Beatles played before or after this song be RP-vibe-connection worthy?
Anggun's version is much more beautiful - sorry David.

9 just didn't do this justice anymore... had to go to 10
No question, one of his very best. The song was just the right choice for the excellent tribute by Lorde at the BRIT awards.

What about Life in California? It's depressingly quiet on my radio here in Stockholm... and worrying, like an old friend who goes missing. Please come back.

This is Life On Mars with no R.P.
Such an interesting song for a time out

Guess I'll have to dust off my Black Oak Arkansas 8-track.
So weird to lose RP this way.{#Stupid}   Trying your alternative. Hope they come back soon {#Laughing}
Don't get me wrong: I enjoy RP a lot.  And I want the service back right now!  I just point out to the others of us with the same desire that there are a few online services as alternates: college radio.  Most of them are online, these days.  So now I'll play everything on PSD while I wait for the problem to be cured and RP restored to us all.  And then I'll try KHUM.

Same thing here in Kentucky for several hours now - David Bowie Life on Mars
+1 to the many stalled stream reports, as of 6:16PM ET Sunday Feb. 21st.  What's up?
I got an email back from Bill, an "out-of-office til March12" automatic response. Haven't tried my iPhone, that's a different server?
My stream has the Bowie cover for over three hours now..... no music!! Get on it, Bill!!!

Rick got around; he was on Cat Steven's "Morning Has Broken" as well.

Indeed, he had an "Another evening with Rick Wakeman" the Friday before last which we went to see locally, and he went through a number of the tracks that he had played on and played his tribute to Bowie that is now a charity track for the MacMillan Cancer charity. Worth looking for.

Thanks again Rick, a great evening - if you are reading this, keep up the leek production, whatever your cat thinks.

listened to this album just yesterday
love this one and "Queen Bitch"
and of course "Changes"
{#Cry} There are no words, to describe, the way I feel inside.
Totally missing the guy.....so friggin complete.
Thank you. Rip.

Another sad loss. This will probably be a day-full of Bowies songs - nothing wrong with that. He has 48 songs in the RP playlist! which is cool.
I wasn't listening to RP on the day we learned of Lemmys passing (i played Motörhead all day that day).
Guess there was no tribute on RP for Lemmy cause I've just looked and there is not a single Motörhead track in the RP playlist, and only one by Hawkwind (but Lemmy didn't play on that one). Dunno what it all means, Just saying.
We're running out of heroes . . .
Bowie - fabulous forever.
A passing that makes one stop.  And reflect . . . upon, well, everything.

I am at a loss for words.  He probably would not have been.

Thanks for the lyrics, the music, the concepts.

You are a comet streaking through the heavens.

I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating
in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today

RIP.    I cannot begin to estimate how many hours his 8 tracks logged in our players, or how many times we had to splice them to keep them playable.
Thank you Mr. Bowie for sharing your creativity and work with us.

a shock to wake up to this morning. Go well.
One of my favorite songs, from one of my all time favorite albums, today is the first time this song has ever made me sad. Rest in peace :(

I prefered the American version, as i am a New Yorker.

I can't hear this song without thinking of American Horror Story now.
Eh, never was one of my fave Bowie tracks. '4'
Turn the volume right up at the end and you can hear him ask for a glass of water. True.

I still detest this Ziggy-era output. Once he adopted his Thin White Duke persona, I could enjoy his music.

Piano is the star of this album on many tracks. It is elevated by that instrument alone.
Some songs are so well-known and distinctive that just the first note identifies them, and this is one such. I'd have got this within a millisecond on a 'beat the intro' game.

Just watched it.  Hard to believe I had never seen it before.

Kudos to Dave for having his choppers "fixed" at some point, because all those dental close-ups were rather frightening!

Will always associate this with the US version of the show by the same name. Before seeing it, I could care less about this song, now it's amazing.
One of my favorite videos of all time. What a freak.

And I mean that as a compliment.

Couldn't stand this album then; time has not changed my opinion of it.

I much prefer his later work.

A fine album.
I couldn't even give the US version half a watch. I simply didn't want to.
It would detract from the UK one and it would never be the same in my mind again...

And Bill? You can catch both versions on Canadian Netflix, since you pondered that on air just now.
