Why must I feel like this today?
I'm a soldier, but afraid sometimes
To face the things that may
Block the sun from shining rays
And fill my life with shades of grey
Still I long to find a way
So today I pray for grace

I take a moment to myself
So I can hear myself
To feel myself
And be real myself
Life's addictions and afflictions
'Cause abrasions from their friction
Sometimes it's easier to live in fiction
I can run, but I can't hide
From the pains that reside down deep inside
There is no pill that can be swallowed
There is no guru that can be followed
There's no escapin' from my own history
Those that I hurt and those that hurt me
I was dead for a million years 'fore I was born and
I'll be dead for a million more after I'm gone
So I live to give somethin' that can live on
Like the way you hum a song when the music's gone
Like the warmth of the sand when the sun goes down
And I'm sittin' with myself, nobody else is around, but

Why must I feel like this today?
I'm a soldier, but afraid sometimes
To face the things that may
Block the sun from shining rays
And fill my life with shades of grey
And still I long to find a way
So today, I pray for grace

Radio, come on now
To all my people in the front, I say hey (hey)
To all my people in the back, I say yo (yo)
To all my people on the side, I say ah (ah)
Everybody in the place tonight
Say yay (yay)
Say yo (yo)
Say yay-ay-ay (yay-ay-ay)
Say yo-o-o (yo-o-o)

It's been a long, long time
Since I been away
Been a long, long time
Since I felt this way
Been a long, long time
I found the words to say
How much I'm grateful
For my life today

'Cause under every cup you might find a nut
Behind every corner you might get jacked up
At the end of every rainbow you might find gold
The last bite of your sandwich, hope you don't find mold
'Cause none of us can live the perfect life
The kind that we see on 'Nick at Nite'
And sometimes we all just lose sight
Of the pain that will guide us
From dark into the light
We fall down yes, but we get up
And sometimes we just need a little bit of love
To help to make it through another day
Into the night, into the light, into a Saturday
So in the morning when I'm waiting for the sun to raise
And my head's a little foggy like I'm in a haze
I remind myself that everything is gonna be okay
I take a breath, slow down and say...

Why must I feel like this today?
I'm a soldier, but afraid sometimes
To face the things that may
Block the sun from shinin' rays
And fill my life with shades of grey
And still I long to find a way
So today I pray for grace

And I say

Why must I feel like this today?
I'm a soldier, but afraid sometimes
To face the things that may
Block the sun from shinin' rays
And fill my life with shades of grey
And still I long to find a way
So today I pray for grace

Radio, come on now
To all my people in the front, I say hey (hey)
To all my people in the back, I say yo (yo)
To all my people on the side, I say ah (ah)
Everybody in the place come on and
Say yay (yay)
Say yo (yo)
Say yay-ay-ay (yay-ay-ay)
Say yo-o-o (yo-o-o)

Why must I feel like this today?
I'm a soldier, but afraid sometimes
To face the things that may
Block the sun from shinin' rays
And fill my life with shades of grey
And still I long to find a way
So today, I pray for grace

So today, I pray for grace
So today, I pray for grace
So today, I pray for grace

May be the only reference to Nick@Nite on RP...
First time I've heard Michael Franti on RP. Well done. Play more please!

BOurgeois BOhemian? It might apply.
That Wikipedia article... Talk about an interesting upbringing, and no wonder his music is so meaningful and varied. I've got a new appreciation for the person he is, let along from the music.
watched this while listening to this song :)

I find him lacking in talent over-all and the low average rating says I am not alone. Add his stupidity in real life and there is a lot of reason to dislike him. He has one or two songs not worth PSD/Next, and them, only barely.
But, Bill gets to play what he wants, and over all, still worth the pittance I can afford to send him, though I'd be far happier if he'd get rid of this yobbo, there are others played I like or don't care about others feel the same about, often for less reason.
Happy song :-)

I'm above the average rating (a 6 vs. 5.6) and the passion you speak of is what's making me go 6 to 7, plus the album title "Everyone Deserves Music" is pretty cool too.  Long Live RP!!
I have a booboo or bobo as some call it. This hurts.
Not sure how much to trust Wikipedia, but sad to hear that Michael Franti's biological mother put him up for adoption because she was afraid her racist family would not accept him.
Don't know the whole story of course, but that sounds like a case of cutting ties with your family if ever I heard one.
Had to check if it really was Radio Paradise playing. Man, this really a stupid song.

Oh no! The PSD is not working!  This sucks!

This song reminds me of a TV program I watched when I was a kid...
Exactly the curing soothing beat I needed... the Caribbean ebbin' in me is not good...!!!  Thanks!

I feel this song -every- morning. >_
Michael Franti has done some stuff which I do like, but this is not one of those tracks.
Agree!

i have Spearhead's 1994 cd "Home"
i'll be pulling that out today
Local Boy makes "good" ... our very own Warrior of Love.

Ask the guy who wrote these lyrics:

"...Get sick, get well
Hang around a ink well
Ring bell, hard to tell
If anything is goin’ to sell
Try hard, get barred
Get back, write braille
Get jailed, jump bail
Join the army, if you fail
Look out kid
You’re gonna get hit
But users, cheaters
Six-time losers
Hang around the theaters
Girl by the whirlpool
Lookin’ for a new fool
Don’t follow leaders
Watch the parkin’ meters..."

Lyrical genius? Most can found on bumper stickers in Berkeley.

Yup, what you said.  I'm a low-rater and a muter, but not a suffer-er, which is why I'm absolutely loving the alternate feed feature!  Kudos to Bill and Rebecca!!!   {#Clap}

Although there is some great music from Michael Franti/Spearhead (the Home album as an example), this is just too simplistic to appeal to me personally.

You are correct in stating that I (as a "hater") would be thrilled to write and perform a song 1/10th as good as this.  However, since I'm not a musician, but a music fan, I have to settle for having an opinion about a song.

Are you telling me that because I'm not a musician, I'm not allowed to like something?  That's one of the dumbest arguements I've seen since the Jersey Shore marathon my wife was watching.

Quite. It has some interesting corollaries, too. If the argument is "only criticise X if you can do it better yourself" then we'd all be restricted to only commenting on those things that we can do. Which would make for an awfully boring world. Imagine going to a football match where the crowd stayed schtumm other than the few spectators who could play the game...

Opinions, negative, positive or indifferent, are the lifeblood of fora. Without them there'd be no point in having fora at all.

On the song, I prefer Franti when he's doing his political agitprop thing. This kind of feel-good lovey-dovey stuff is a bit, hmm, 'out of character'.

Painful.

Here, try this out. Walk around and randomly tell everyone you meet that they are an asshole. Now, what do you think the common perception of you will be? It's quite sensible for you to be considered an asshole. What you did here was call the singer an asshole based on (I'm assuming) your dislike of this song. That's a pretty ridiculous assessment, and it is not at all surprising that others would consider you an asshole for saying that.

Your analogy is true crap. I DID NOT comment on, or directly regarding, anyone here who might have made a comment regarding me, which was my point. I would not, and don't walk around RANDOMLY calling people assholes.
And I'm sorry, but YOUR assumption "(I'm assuming)"  is very wrong, invalidating the rest of what you said here.
Please read with more care and comprehension in the future.
