Shine on backwards oh, masters of my fate
Tell me great ones just how I rate
Should I bow my head or scream your holy names
Tell me dear ones am I still in the game?
Shine on up down to you dear lords I pray
Give me answers and happiness today
Should I dress in white or wear thee around my neck
Tell me great ones just how to write the check

To pay for my sins and keep my lords in animal skins
To pay for my acts and keep my lords in white cadillacs

This morning today, 041924, has been made Golden, up to here.
Thanks for the last 20's, and the 20's to come!
Crack the Sky is one of my favorite "unknown" bands from way  back. Great to hear them on RP.
+1 to 8 on the strength of the outro, and Long Live RP and lords in white Cadillac's!
I always loved this band, especially the earlier albums. This song is great, but not particularly representative of most of their music. Check out the rest of the album, and the others. Thanks for playing, RP!
Wow - never heard this, or even heard of this group.
Pretty darned good...
Still Resonates 45 years later...
Wow these guys are so far below the radar it’s hard to believe they aren’t doing it on purpose.  But Radio Paradise still found them.  They are still putting out albums!

Too, to, and two. I know, it can be confusing.

I agree! I have first 4 studio albums plus Live Sky. A band I was in during late 70's played Hold On and Lighten Up McGraw..

Reminds me a little of Church of Betty.
Saw three of their albums in an antique store yesterday.   Ironic to note that they're antiques, and even further ironic that the checkout woman asked me, "Do you really have a turntable for these?"

...or you didn't live near Baltimore.
Outstanding, biting satire under a lovely melody!  I always loved CTS!!!!
Hmm.....  This song did not reach the coal mine single men's bunkhouse where I was living in 1976.

Judging from some of the comments, I will have to pay more attention.  FWIW, this song reminds me a little of quebecois group Harmonium which could be described as acoustic-weighted prog rock.

Never too late to catch up
I'd assumed this was about the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, but turns out it's from before then. Great song, either way.
Play more CTS! Such a great band.

Dead on the money!! Great first 3 albums. Very intelligent compositions. I am still looking for those albums complete on CD. One of the rock bands I was drumming for in the 70's covered Hold On.

The first three CTS albums and the live album are just incredible, and mandatory. Not quite Prog rock, but really great intricate musicianship and complex arrangements with great lyrics. What more could you want?

Due to some personality issues and likely infighting (the lead singer for albums 1-3 isn't singing on the live album, for instance) things got less amazing afterward.
In fact, there's a big history to the band that's worth reading - later.

For now, go grab CTS, Animal Notes, Safety in Numbers, and Live Sky. You will so incredibly impressed.

John Palumbo my lyrical hero...
Lighten Up McGraw
Wet Teenager
Surf City/Hold On
Nuclear Apathy
Ice
Robots for Ronnie

CTS put out some kick ass albums back in the 70s. RP listeners would love their stuff. Witowski is as good as Brian May.
As mentioned earlier - "Crack The Sky - Live Sky" is near the top of the best live rock albums of all time list IMHO.

As far as I know, it has never been released in it's entirety on CD, but I still enjoy my vinyl of it. Side one just kicks butt.

Compare the theme song from the recently not renewed HBO show "Vinyl" with the live version of "Lighten Up McGraw" (both can be found on youtube).
I must confess, I missed this group in 76. Not sure if I was listening to to much Zeppelin and Floyd and the likes. Maybe to much pot, or not enough.{#Rolleyes}
very cool historically edged tribal boogie from a decade (70's) of wicked satire
I love that radio!!!

still I'm sad by the Yardbirds and within you and without you, Beetles...interesting sound
Bill's got an animal theme going.  Cool.

That's their point. Mocking the man the Beatles called Sexy Sadie.

I was a big Crack the Sky fan back in the day. It's great to hear them on RP. Some more samples would be nice Bill.
Everything about this song is BEAUTIFUL!
a little too Beatley for me

This is a brilliant song from a truly magnificent album...  love it!!!!
This is a better song than John Lennon even thought about writing after 1969.  If he was as insightful as he thought he was, something like this would have come out instead of fatuous crap like "Imagine".  Great cut, sorry I never heard of these guys.  BTW, it does predate Jonestown and the Swami Bahgram up here in the PNW.  A bit prophetic, eh?
This was one of  the "hip" records senior year at Northern Valley Regional High School, 1976.
Pretty funny song!

We are just a bunch of go-go dancers...  hope you are having a very nice time right this minute, Carl...

this is a magnificent song from a great album—  this is an incredible band who never hit the big time for some mysterious reason...

From the singing, I thought this might be Ween. Rather good, and from a band I've never heard of; think I'll have to check more out from these guys.
There Ya Go!! Love this stuff!
Have their "Safety in Numbers" LP. Very nice. Nuclear Apathy is the highlight IMHO. I always think of this band at the same time as Pretty Things and their LP "Silk Torpedo." Maybe I shouldn't, but I do.
Saw and met them in Pittsburgh in 1978.  Good show at the then Stanley Theatre.  We played them quite a lot on the late great WYDD freeform radio station in the 70's

Great band! I can't figure out why they never broke big. Great mix between progressive rock, catchy tunes and hooks with witty lyrics. To this day I cannot fing all the original releases reissued on CD.

I HIGHLY recommend the first 4 LPs and Live Sky.

In the best W.C. Fields voice the MC introduces the band.... "Ladies and Gentlemen, this band has come all the way down from an acid trip just to play for you. Please welcome, Crack The Sky"
AMG says this was released in 1976.
I have never heard of this band, me likey!{#Clap}

Maybe we can get some "Robots For Ronnie" or "I Don't Have a Tie to Wear to Your Affair" on RP.
Makes me think of the album Crack the Skye by Mastodon. Couldn't be more different from this, but its good if you're into that sort of thing.
Wow, I have not heard anything from Crack The Sky except for the "Safety In Numbers" album years ago.   This is some tasty stuff made even better by comming on the heals of Tinariwen.
...interesting and likeable, both...

I had a buddy who loved them. He turned me on to them about the same time I found RP.
He had all their stuff on vinyl, and they and RP sounded great on his '65 Fisher Tube amp he got refurbed from E-bay(hurray for russian tubes!) and he was transferring his collection to mp3s as fast as he could, but for real pleasure we listened to the vinyl

Didn't these guys have a Pittsburgh, Stubenville, Wheeling WV connection?? Any help out there?

Yes they did.
Rick Witkowski played with Wild Cherry of "Play that Funky Music" fame.  I think there might be a Beaver Falls connection also.
I have Animal Notes and Crack the Sky on vinyl, there's no mention of any Steubenville or Wheeling connections in the liner notes.

Haven't heard this is ages, still have the vinyl on the shelf somewhere...
Wow! Surprised to see this one! One of 'the best bands you never heard'. {#Cheers}  Thanks RP!
...cool...

I totally agree about the Intro! It is on the "Live Sky" LP. A band I was in during the early 80's actually opened our show with "Hold On" ala Live Sky.

Add "Ice" and "Nuclear Apathy", "Rangers at Midnight"  for the witty lyric. They had several very good albums.

You know you're an RP listener when...you recognize a song and realize you've only heard it on RP.
Hmm please play it again, I wasn't paying enough attention in time.
I thought the lyrics were way cheesy at first, then the line about 'keeping my lords in white cadillacs' came in and I finally twigged the satire. Nice one :o)
Well, I have never heard them before, and I kinda like it. So there, it takes all kinds to a forum make.
As compared to the nauseal babbling that listeners get away with in commentaries because Bill actually cares about giving us a forum? I'll take this, and a bit of Bollywood too, thank you. Shesdifferent wrote:

Yes indeed. This sounds like it's trying really really really hard to get that tripped-out, played-backwards, eastern influenced sound. To me it just sounds phony and strained.
daa daaa da da da da daaa....daa daaa da da da da daaa...
Crack the Sky! I never thought I'd hear them over the "air" again. Their lyrics were a little shaky, but the band played wonderful stuff on their Crack the Sky LP. Have to dig it out....hope it didn't get warped or mildewed in the humidity (it's not the heat, you know) I'd always thought they were from West Virginia, but Baltimore took a liking to them. downey ocean? Surf City, here come the sharks. But "being is my life"? Like I said, the lyrics were a little shaky.

Shit! Bro says Mom's car's comin' up the road! Flush the bong-water, crank on the bathroom fan, spray the Lysol, get out the Math books and Pretend...

Gaoin downy Hammerjack's in see Crack The Sky, hon!
oh geez, way off-radar indeed!! I though I was the only person left on the planet who had actually ever heard of these guys. For 25+ years, I held onto a beat up 'Safety in Numbers' home-made cassette made for me by an air force buddy while we were in Germany (you know how it was--'oh man, you GOTTA hear this!!!!), hoping that one day I could find either an LP or CD. Bundled now with 'Animal Notes', and far superior, in my opinion. (come on, we were 21, and 'The Wall' was the end all to be all then);)
an old girlfriend introduced me to CTS. . . I've never forgiven her. . .
RP only gets away with this stuff because we love that eclectic variety. Blaaahhhh I'd rather hear Bollywood!
"We are Spinal Tap!"

I appreciate the variety that RP provides. But as for this song, I think "Crack" is the operative word.
Now, I am really impressed... what an off-the-radar selection. I had to actually look at the playlist to confirm what I thought I was hearing... keep digging RP, love what you turn up and put on
Nice!!!!!
I grew up in Joisey outside NYC... I thought Crack was a local band and love Album 1 - the epynomous Crack the Sky. How about 'Robots for Ronnie?'
Pee. Yew.
Yummy music, shite vocals ... that's my opinion and I'm stickin' to it
A terrific and very underrated band!
Some nice nods to the Beatles. I like this!
Ive given this is a 7 and I really want to give it more but its just the guys voice! The music is excellent though.

I have to agree with the part of this type of music having been done better by other groups/persons. Still, it was enjoyable for me ... and just part of the RP variety, which is why I come here to listen!
YES!!! Often I've wondered why I'd never heard Crack the Sky on this station. Seemed like such a natural fit here! And now I have - and hearing this again is awesome!!
Music great. Vocals not so great.

Wow...very cool to hear these guys on RP. I'm glad I'm not the only one to know of these guys or know their music. They were awesome in thier time!! One of my fav's of thiers is 'Ice'.

I uploaded Nuclear Apathy, it was rejected. Thought Flashlight might be a little too racy for RP... they are both awesome songs, I agree! Also: CTS are not from Baltimore, they are from Steubenville, Ohio. They were "adopted" by Baltimore. Apparently, Baltimore was the only city where the distributor didn't screw up and the records arrived in stores before the band arrived for the tours. Also, they became favorites of the old 98 Rock DJ's (the music professors of my youth) who pushed hard to get them into the regular playlist. That's how they became a Baltimore band.

It has been so long since I have heard this song. Sitting in my office now, it seems like another lifetime! Definitely Beatle-ish, but a great tune regardless. Saw them once in that other life in a small club, standing right at the front of the stage with my buddies. What a show it was. It would be fantastic to hear more from Crack the Sky.
Now that's some cool shit right there yo.

Ok, put down the joint and go to AMG entry ....that is a sure way to find out....I like the song...and the arrangement...Ok...I will make it easy it is a Seventies band
I just had RP on in the background at work, and all of a sudden I heard this song. I know that I had heard it before, but it was soooo long ago. Who is it? Go to the web page, and lo and behold, it's Crack the Sky! That was back in my college years that somehow seem to be foggy (for some reason). What great music they made, and their concerts were so very tight also. It was great to hear it once again, and I agree that something from Safety in Numbers would fit right in with the mix here. Keep up the outstanding work!
...adds to CDs to buy list....

AWESOME SONG ... but somehow I feel like I should be in a movie sequence where I am hitchiking across the wilds of asia.
Well, that was interesting enough I suppose. Probably something better heard once in a while than on a regular basis. Like the \"Within You Without You\" nod a the end. Nice touch.
George Harrison wants his song back.

Excellent!! A well deserving band from the Cleveland area on RP, and prog-rockers who're still doing it after all these years! I had forgotten about Crack the Sky. Thanks! Blarg.
WOW!!! yet another great, barely known band from Baltimore! thanks for adding these guys!
Damn! You mean there\'s two copies of this record? I thought I had the only one. Haven\'t heard this forever - love it. Thanks.
An excellent example of eclectic intelligent rock
