For a band that covers a lot of dark ground with song content, this is nice little love song.

One of the finest, most expressive vocalists in the history of rock and roll....that's rock and roll people — singers come in all shapes and sizes and the idea is to convey the soul and emotion of the lyrics you wrote - at least since Mssrs. Lennon and McCartney changed the rules. So viva Elvis C., Bruce S., Bobby D. and all the others who could never "sing" like Bing Crosby. (although I even like it when Elvis tries :-))

Myself being a PJ fan, I would like to recommend some lighter PJ songs that might lighten things up. From their collection of B-sides "Lost Dogs", please listen to "Black Red Yellow", "Dirty Frank", "Sweet Lew", "Leaving Here" You will definitely appreciate the humor in those songs.
PJ comes off as serious because they are writing songs about serious issues- ever hear the forrest gump soundtrack or listen to dylan or bob marley or springsteen or public enemy? those guys were serious, too. we are in a time of war, but most of the popular music of our era has nothing to do with war or anti-war or the people who are leading us to war (with the embarrassing exception of the "country music" scene that pushes a McCarthyesque version of patriotism). but if you really listen to them, and the worn out six-song rotation you hear on commercial radio doesn't count, they do keep an element of zaniness in their music, especially live. most of their albums have gotten increasingly diverse, rather than regurgitory, since ten, with the possible exception of riot act, which is a bit more streamlined, but they definitely showcase a broader spectrum of music than, say, Nirvana or Soundgarden or *insert other stereotypical 90's "grunge" band here*. by the way, "grunge" had more to do with the commercialization of the Seattle music scene than it had to do with the music. end rambling.
They lack humor? C'mon. I saw their first Riot Act show in Denver and it was epic. During Bush League, Eddie impaled a mark of Bush. He also belted out the following...

agreed. Pearl Jam are almost now a living parody of grunge. They're self referencing their music to the point of oblivion, or worse still, a sort of omni-present grunge-muzak. Gee they need to lighten up and get a bit of self deprecation and humour into their work. Evolve a bit. Reinvent themselves.
