Love
I get so lost sometimes
Days pass
And this emptiness fills my heart

When I want to run away
I drive off in my car
But whichever way I go
I come back to the place you are

All my instincts
They return
The grand façade
So soon will burn

Without a noise
Without my pride
I reach out from the inside

In your eyes
The light, the heat
In your eyes
I am complete
In your eyes
I see the doorway
To a thousand churches
In your eyes
The resolution
In your eyes
Of all the fruitless searches

Oh, I see the light and the heat
In your eyes
Oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light
The heat I see in your eyes

Love
I don't like to see so much pain
So much wasted
And this moment keeps slipping away

I get so tired
Working so hard for our survival
I look to the time with you
To keep me awake and alive

And all my instincts
They return
And the grand façade
So soon will burn

Without a noise
Without my pride
I reach out from the inside

In your eyes, in your eyes
In your eyes, in your eyes

In your eyes
The light the heat
In your eyes
I am complete
In your eyes
I see the doorway
To a thousand churches
In your eyes
The resolution
In your eyes
Of all the fruitless searches

Oh, I see the light and the heat
In your eyes
Oh, I want to be that complete
I wanna touch the light
The heat I see in your eyes

In your eyes, in your eyes
In your eyes, in your eyes
In your eyes, in your eyes

David Sancious on keyboards, Darryl Jones on bass, David Rhodes on guitar, and Manu Katche on drums.

Utterly joyful
I like the little tinkely thing at the end, and then drums kick in
Going to see Youssou N'dour on Friday night (21.10.2022) at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg!  A few months ago I was listening to RP at work, and a nice YN song came on.  I spontaneously googled Youssou N'Dour Tour, and there were tickets available at the Elbphilharmonie - wow!  I've been wanting to go there for years!  Two birds with one stone... (in a good way)
Not this performance, but pure visual/aural porn just the same:

In Your Eyes w/ Papa Wembe
There are a lot of live versions of this that started overshadowing the album version on commercial radio as far back as the mid-90s.    I think the best one is the Chobham UK concert that's on YouTube and there are a couple of others that are stand outs as well.   The Athens 1987 version is a bit weak in comparison, the music and drums are not as tight, although you can see they are setting the standard here for what would become the live version of the song for decades to come.  I think Peter and his band improved their live chops significantly over time.  Bill check out some of these other versions.   Am I the only one that has to turn this up to 11 when it comes on, no matter what version?

Agree 100%.
Although it must be noted, less competition in the '80's than any other decade before or since!

i would give an arm and a kidney to have his voice.

Normally, I wouldn't give a damn for PG and his stuff, but 8.1 rating for THIS, while so many great and talented ethnic and tribal musicians get dissed, ridiculed and rated with the lowest of the low here is hypocrisy on steroids.

You must be great at dinner parties....
I saw this played during the Secret World tour with Sinéad O'Connor in 1993 in Mexico City of all places... such an incredible audio visual experience. Soundtrack of my youth years for sure

It's not, actually. It just starts out that way.

Pardon me, but I believe RP has an entire channel that plays world music. And it seems to me that the Elitist here is you since you feel so superior to those of us who like Peter Gabrial and know that if an artist uses rhythms and timing of world music they are being complimentary, not trying to be, or thinking they are better.
This song has been described by Melissa Etheridge as "the most beautiful love song ever written." I'm inclined to agree.

Must have been the tour before that I saw him at Maple Leaf Gardens... rolling over the crowd in his plastic bubble, and the terrifyingly cool robotic spotlights hovering over him serpent-like as he curled up in a ball onstage to sing either Don't Give Up or Mercy Street.

So love full this concert. So great musicians and public
Manu Kathé the French-drummer so great
Reminds me of his earlier 'Plays Live' album that I used to listen a lot in my younger days, especially 'Shock the Monkey' and 'No Self Control' songs. In a way, more raw energy.
this just made my 30th birthday  <3  so many memories, this song gives me wings
Well worth watching this incredible performance on youtube.
Make sure you get the 12 minute one and not the 10 minute version.

Divine.
This is by far my favorite concert DVD in my collection. I remember  my daughter was probably about 6 or 7 years old when she came and asked me "do you know who Peter Gabriel is? Cuz they are playing his concert on The Disney Channel tonight"
We watched it together and she became a fan. She's 29 now and I gave her a copy for Christmas a couple years back.  It was a timeless cross generational father / daughter moment that we still cherish.

The new mix is also available on a Blu-ray and doesn't have that unfortunate little speed glitch in the middle like this one does. (Not a copying error, it really is that way on the disc.)

I remember when it was added to the library and have been looking for it ever since.

I just got the brand new 2020 vinyl release of this album on Saturday just for this version of this song.  Haven't cracked the shrink yet, but I will be doing it very soon.  It has been extremely hard to find over the years in any form.

Long ago rated a 10.
Reminds me of show I saw him play in Golden Gate Park on the WOMAD tour. It was a great show and line up.

Hmm ... I'm not sure I would call the song itself 'joyous.'  The verses are downright bleak ... but that's to act as contrast to launching into a redemptive chorus of hope and revival found 'in your eyes' ... a true love song.   But yes, this is a joyous performance of this song.
Magnifique version
I like the part where he shouts "EVERYBODY!" like they weren't already all singing along...
Two of my top 10 concerts are Peter Gabriel!

Gave this an instant 9 the first time I heard it on RP several months ago (which was the first time I’d heard it - thanks Bill); then I saw the video. Now it’s bumped 9 > 10. Wish I could’ve been there.
I tested your theory with a Nespresso Americano and achieved similar results. Science!

I like to imagine hearing this played live, outdoors, and the audience would be all Radio Paradise fans singing & dancing together.  Also, just watched the video of this for the first time. It's a delight of a bonus. Much dancing and hopping. Gabriel was no Johnny  Clegg (RIP ), but he's precious too.

You can go make a coffee during this song, and when you come back it'll still be playing!

Watch the video. At 3:34 PG sings "...without a noise" as he is jumping., then again when he jumps and sings "without my pride". The audio of his vocals should fade as he jumps but it doesn't. A few seconds later PG is singing  "...inside" while the video shows him singing "...whoaoahh".    Clearly dubbed.

Nevertheless it is a great concert performance.

A more apt tune for these times of racial strife does not exist.

I would almost trade the 100-odd concerts I have gone to just to see this tune performed live in 1988.
Amazing version with Youssou Ndour. Think about the time frame! '88??

Agreed - this version is where I want to use my 11 rating.
I've tired from this long winded commitment of a tune. The novelty wore off many moons ago and now it prods along feeling more dated as time goes on. I'm a big PG fan...but this is hard to stomach for so many years. Sadly I use the PSD button.
   Is that Phil on drums..

Blasted with Dengue Fever, sounds like a great name for a band.

Got to see Peter at the LA Coliseum with Tracy Chapman, Sting and Bruce at the Amnesty International Human Rights Now! tour in September, 1988. What a freakin' show. Love Gabriel.

PS:  Where's the world map that shows how many listeners are "tuned in"?

I looked back, and the second comment I posted on RP was the following on the studio version of this song:

My freshman college roommate and his girlfriend had this as "their" song. I heard it to the point of utter revulsion at that time, preferring to brave the subzero temperatures outside than hear "In your eyes.." for the twelfth frickin' time on a given day. Sorry Peter, I like a lot of your stuff, but even two and half decades later I still start to twitch when I hear this song...

I don't twitch as much a few years later, maybe in another decade I will join all those that love, or at least tolerate this song.

I think it's cool, assuming that your count is correct. One of the features of RP is the idiosyncratic approach to the music. Sometimes a theme flows through the selection, at other times who knows? But like many maybe most of us, he probably finds a particular musician more compelling, in some way, for a while, then moves on. The difference is that he has his own station.
Without a doubt the greatest version of this song. Heck, this is the greatest version of a lot of other songs, too. A showstopper.

This sir, is my favorite version ever, of this song .. when Youssou N'Dour's solo bit and the ambient echo hit .. I just get that feeling of "wow" from the start of the last word in the solo .. till you can't hear it echoing ..

It also take me back to one of the few live concerts I've been so lucky to have time and money to go see .. PG's UP! tour .. and then reminds me of Blind Boys of Alabama doing the opening for it, and how good that was too!

And for anyone that's never said it before.. Thank U 'atrocity' for having uploaded this.
