On July 27 1970 a friend and I took a bus to the Grant Park band shell in Chicago to a concert with Muddy Waters & Sly & the Stoned Family. The concert was a riot. Literally. Muddy Waters came on and was great. Sly never showed up and the DJ announcer was being a real jerk about it and helped to incite things. Unbeknownst to everyone that it was all planned by the Chicago Po-lice. They had detained Sly and the band and had Po-Lice in full riot gear waiting near by since before the rot even started. My friend and I made it to the museum and got in before they locked the doors to keep the rioters out. The Po-Lice were letting people riot and arresting the people that were trying to leave and get away from it. One of the highlights was when they shot tear gas at the crowd the wind blew most of it back to them.
Never did get to see Sly in concert.
They had only recently started to allow rock concerts there and because of this there were no more rock concerts there for a long time.

It's a sad situation for sure...This occurred in the part of town I worked in for the first 9 years I worked for the cable company here. From what I understand, shit had been going on for years back and forth between the two, but they always just walked back inside their respective homes and life went on...His neighbor finally snapped I guess and that was it. It 's tragic. I learned early on when I moved to San Antonio and read about a man getting stabbed to death over a quarter pool game that life has no sanctity here.
