Some of you know I fish.   Once upon a time I wrote articles about fly fishing, recreational fishing management and environmental clean ups.

In the late 1970s, Canadian mining giant Cominco now known as Teck invested about C$12 million into a water treatment plant for the Sullivan Mine complex in Kimberley, British Columbia.

There was very little public pressure on Cominco to do this.  The Rod & Gun columnist for the local newspaper might have written a few words but otherwise there was no campaign.  The effluent discharge was discolouring rocks in the lower St. Marys river but trout and other fish thrived and moreover the effluent contributed to increased fish carrying capacity of Kootenay Lake.

The folks I talked to at Cominco said that they had all read Silent Spring and were able to convince senior management to do this.

I ran into this elsewhere too.

To conclude, Silent Spring not only influenced a movement and the creation of environmental protection agencies, it directly impacted the behaviour of large corporations.
