Voters Say Black Lives Matter Protests Were Important. They Disagree On Why.
About a fifth of all voters said the protests were the single most important factor in their decision at the ballot box, according to a new survey.

It shined a spotlight on a person who has ovecome incredible adversity, given back to her community in myriad ways, and set an example we'd all do well to follow.

Whoever that horrible woman was, I give her a sincere Thank You. Without her vitriol and hate, I never would have known about this true American patriot.

Yes, Gisele Fetterman is rather classy, isn't she?  Her story possesses lots of modern elements of what could be construed as the "American dream".

Unfortunately, the white women who insulted her wears her socio-economic status on her face.  It is really hard to feel angry.   Sorrow and pity is what I feel for her.

Yes, I agree. I am more sad for her than angry at her.

What concerns me more is people now think it is acceptable to yell at and harass people in broad daylight, in a grocery store parking lot, with cameras recording. Used-to-be, violent racists had sense enough to wait until dark and wear hoods.

Angela Davis: ‘We Knew That the Role of the Police Was to Protect White Supremacy’
She moved to New York at 15 to attend high school there, went to West Germany to study philosophy and Marxism under Herbert Marcuse at the Frankfurt school, and, back in the US by the end of the 60s, was active in the Black Panthers and a member of the Communist party. Her links to communism meant that the then California governor, Ronald Reagan, had her sacked from her position as acting assistant professor of philosophy at UCLA.

(...)

Davis has tried to pull that movement into the mainstream before. She ran for office herself in 1980, as the vice-presidential candidate for the US Communist party. In a lecture in 2006, she despaired at the George W Bush administration, and now she can’t even bring herself to say Trump’s name, instead opting for “the current resident of the White House”. Does she think US democracy at present has room for radical ideas about social change? “I don’t think it can happen,” says Davis. “Not with the leadership of the current political formations – not the Democrats, and certainly not the Republican party.”

But what about the Democrats taking a knee and wearing kente cloth in solidarity? Nancy Pelosi and other prominent Democrats wore the Ghanaian fabric, which was given to them by the Congressional Black Caucus, to show “solidarity” with African Americans, a crucial voter base that their presidential candidate, Joe Biden, is struggling to connect with. “That was because they want to be on the right side of history,” Davis says, dismissively. “Not necessarily because they’re going to do the right thing.”

Davis sometimes tells a story at her lectures about how, as a young child in Birmingham, she asked her mother why she couldn’t go to the segregated amusement park or libraries. Her mother, who was an activist before her, explained how segregation worked, but didn’t leave it there. “She continually told us that things would change,” says Davis. “And that they would change, and that we could be a part of that change. So I learned as a child to live under racial segregation, but at the same time simultaneously, to live in an imagined new world and to recognise that things would not always be as they were.”

“My mother always said to us: ‘This is not the way things are supposed to be, this is not the way the world is supposed to be.’

Diversity-Related Training: What Is It Good For?
Musa al-Gharbi September 16, 2020

Excerpt:

TRAINING OFTEN REINFORCES BIASES

Often, when people attempt to do fact-checks, they begin by underscoring the falsehood, and then proceed to try to debunk that falsehood. This can create what psychologists call an ‘illusory truth effect,’ where people end up remembering the falsehood, forgetting the correction – and then attributing their misinformation to the very source that had tried to correct it! A similar effect seems to hold with anti-bias training. By highlighting various stereotypes associated with particular groups, and calling for their suppression, they often end up reinforcing them in participants’ minds. Sometimes they even implant new stereotypes (for instance, if participants didn’t previously have particular stereotypes for Vietnamese people, or much knowledge about them overall, but were introduced to common stereotypes about this group through training intended to dispel said stereotypes).

I don't dispute the analysis, but I would like to see WHY those ballots were rejected as well. Signatures don't match, non-Anglo names, addresses don't match, etc?

In Austin there's a kid running for local office. He lives and studies at Huston-Tillotson University near downtown. His previous mailing address was outside the district, so he changed it to the university - where he lives and studies. His application was initially denied, because his so-called  'permanent address' was not in the district.

When I was in college, I literally had no 'permanent address' whatsoever. My family was stationed overseas, I was in the dorms. I'm sure it would have been easier then, but I don't think I even tried to register to vote. Today? In maybe the most consequential election they'll ever see, college students and other transients face huge hurdles to registering and voting. Something as simple-sounding as a 'permanent address' can be anything but simple.
